  1. You're saying I should join nachi? It's the only thing around here that fulfills your criteria. Oh, I just can't! If only there was an active organization that had no significant numbers in the riff-raff category. That would be nice! Oooooooh, just the thought of it. Tingly all over!
  2. Les ain't wrong, but... don't get toooooo confident. I had a discussion recently with Daniel Friedman. If anyone has a right to be overconfident (and they don't), then it would be Friedman. An incredibly nice man, he put a link to my site because I offered a minor edit. After I thanked him for the link and such a vast resource of information he said thanks, but added, he will never get too confident because then you start to miss things. He's one of the pioneers who will help everyone. His friends rank among the best in this field as well (present company excluded!)
  3. Hi Ken, Always good to have an HVAC guy around a place like this. I used to be a zipper-head in Endicott! I was into flying gliders at the tri-city airstrip. Beautiful land, too little sun.
  4. If you are straining to provide this service, then don't. I would love to have the report complete by the time I leave, but I can't do that and provide adequate detail, clarity and customization for a particular home. That may be because you are trying to compose your report prematurely. I am very comfortable when I inspect a home, largely because I concentrate solely on the home. Don't pressure yourself - especially as a noob - to know everything on site. At this point, you should often have questions after an inspection. What do you do then? Take both detail and overview (big picture) photos. Get to know every system. Relax and learn. It will delay your inevitable burnout with this business. Well, if you know []. You're right and I don't believe there is a shortcut that won't hurt your client and your reputation. My average time has gone from 6-8 hours down to about 3 hours. My reports are better now than they were as a noob (most of us are embarrassed when we think back). As I said, my report preparation time is less than half of what it was initially, yet I do nothing differently now than when I started. The time is reduced because I have come to know local architecture and building practices. When I see something now, it is likely that I have studied its causes, asked the pros here, and been embarrassed that I didn't know something that Kurt, Katen, Mike, Les, Chad or Jimmy already knew. THIS id="maroon">is the place to be embarrassed. You are asking the right questions. I looked at your website and you seem to be one of the good guys starting out in this biz. (Don't turn into a jerk now and embarrass me.)[:-weepn] Wish I had shortcuts for you, but I don't want to cheat you or make you believe in an HI Santa. TIJ et. al. is the closest thing I've found to a friend in this business. I do have one word of advice for you. Like you, I also place tags on shut-offs. Since I did that, I didn't repeat the information in my report. That sure busted a nut when it came time for ASHI report verification. (They do not believe there is more than one correct path to anything or anywhere. [:-yuck]) Best of luck!
  5. Squinted to see the little pic, but you guessed it. They (wedges) had better be superfluous at this point. I would guess it's a nice deck since they did take care to level it.
  6. No model #????
  7. Les, Remember that rock???
  8. You are so effin' cool! I'd go to a TIJ meet just to talk to you!
  9. Why the hell not? No sawzall? Did you go up there, or send a helper?
  10. Joe, We do have a sense of humor here, no?id="size4"> Gary: While I'm not really sure just what you're trying to say, I assume you're expressing disappointment at what you found (or more likely didn't find) when you clicked on that link. We all know that kind of stuff can be found all over the internet; I can assure you that it won't be found here at TIJ. Joe Hancaviz (AKA "Some Guy") Nazareth, PA
  11. Precisely, Jim. I do not believe it will cut wet wood.
  12. Carl, I don't know if you saw the NOVA special about the observatories high in the mountains, but it was really cool. One of the Ph.D.'s was cutting some aluminum to patch a hole. In radio contact with base camp, the experience was recorded. You could hear how frustrated this brilliant man was. And you could tell that he was oxygen deprived. "No matter how much I cut it, it still won't cover the hole!" - and he was very serious.
  13. Steven, that is way effin' cool. Thanx
  14. SAC headquarters, Omaha beach - no wait -that was Nebraska. ('72-'78)
  15. That's kinda cool to run into as a noob. After a couple of beers... Measure twice, cut once??? Or was it measure once, cut twice?? Yeah, that's it.
  16. Like Mike said, plus: Around Buffalo, they are installed in all new construction (bedrooms), BUT...as soon as an owner complains that they can't run the vacuum without resetting the CB, the electricians pull them right out and replace them with non-arc faults.
  17. Mike, you're right. Most people realize that, but it does not matter. Does the house need new siding, or another coat of paint? New plumbing, or Drano. New electric, or more gas appliances? In other words, real changes or name changes? Did you know that MRC's are out and CE's are in?
  18. Who cares? Neither matter.
  19. Good one! They stated what we all know, but it is nice to see it provided to the public. Particularly enlightening for the public is the line, "Belmont, a member of the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors, said he did not support the Senate legislation because it would have rendered his credentials useless." I've considered Robitaille's organization. It just seems weird to belong to an organization that says you are independent. If I belong to any, after this Sept, it may be his. On second thought, no. So long as TIJ is around, it's all good.
  20. I started to sign up, so I could read it but then I read something about limited advertising being sent out, so I bailed. Would like to give it a read, however.
  21. Wow, I'm trying to think of who would be the AHJ for such a thing. In general, it certainly is not a requirement. Foster rules? Dunno.
  22. I can't believe I just clicked on some guy's link that is labeled: Here's the view between my legs. Dumb! [:-banghea
  23. Hey Mike, If you don't know how to work with quotes, you should just not use them...[:-party]
  24. It's too big for hangers, you'll have to call it something else. Wasted lumber?
