  1. I didn't throw 'locknut' in there without reason. They say it is available with a standard or grounding locknut here (4th item down): http://www.o-zgedney.com/whatsNew.htm
  2. Thanks Paul. It's all good.[:-thumbu]
  3. Joe, I'm just trying to prevent overgeneralization. We don't need HI's out there screaming that every locknut is bad at hubs. The locknut you pictured is NOT allowed. The locknut in my picture IS allowed. I love being wrong when I learn something, but so far, I haven't learned anything. I am NOT an electrician, so I'm sure there is something I am missing, not you. My picture came from here... http://www.o-zgedney.com/PDF/EB1thru3.pdf
  4. Hmmm, any 'regular' locknut - correct? I'm not trying to be trying, but this locknut (for wet locations) would be ok, no? Download Attachment: wetLocknut.gif 7.99 KB
  5. Good video Joe. I wasn't aware of the end of life indicator requirement, thanks. BTW, they should just keep Laura's face on the screen.
  6. Kurt, I was really disappointed last night when I saw that you did not show up at the Chicago tryouts for "So you think you can dance." Very disappointed.
  7. Very nice, Joe - thanks! That's how computers are supposed to make our lives easier.
  8. Thanks Joe. I can see where the lock-nut might allow for water intrusion, but how can the HI know that the lock-nut, combined with a particular grommet (for example) is not allowed? IOW, can we assume that every lock-nut is a violation of the rules?
  9. JLB, What's your first name? I think you will find this group to welcome various perspectives, and we're generally nice enough. Anyway... You should be able to find the weights of various ladders listed on the websites that sell them. Personally, I don't think you will like the weight of the combination ladders. I'm a stronger than average 54 year old, but I don't want to push my 'lower back' any more than I have to. I have a 24' aluminum extension on my roof rack. My 6' aluminum step ladder gets me up to attics and fits inside my Grand Cherokee. So my 'indoor' ladder stays clean, while my 'outdoor' ladder doesn't weigh me down. I am ALWAYS vigilant of electric if I'm using a ladder, but that's a good idea even if you use fiberglass! Best of luck in your choice!
  10. Frank, I'd just write something like... Vinyl siding above kitchen window is distorted. This may be cosmetic only, but something is under there. An experienced siding installer can easily expose this area to find out what it is.
  11. It just looks buckled - buckling can be quite stiff. Did the installer allow clearance for expand/contract? Did you actually feel something physical under there? J-channel nails could be popping out, but that shouldn't be the case for a 2 year-old home where there's solid framing to nail to.
  12. That's the Katenized writing we all know and love. Perfect!
  13. On a less rhetorical note... How would you complete the sentence? The year is 2027. Home inspection is ____. A.) no longer an occupation. B.) a well-respected profession with tough entry requirements. C.) the same as it was in 2007. D.) a function performed by P.E.'s. BTW, there are only answers A-D, so you can't answer E.) I'll be in my 70's and won't care.
  14. Kurt, Do you get the feeling that none of this would be an issue if HI's went through consistent, rigorous training & education?
  15. That's good feedback. Jim: I agree that it is not within our purvue to call a structure sound. Clearly, that requires an engineer's stamp. But does this new verbiage allow me to describe a system as "inadequate", or is that a comment on its adequacy? If I see a piece of 2X supporting a cantilevered step, can I say it's inadequate? I know you aren't a lawyer, but you could play one on TV.
  16. How would you feel if you had to put the following into your contract (in no less than 6-point font)... "Home inspectors are not permitted to make any statements or comments concerning the adequacy or soundness of the home, its structure or systems and are not permitted to provide engineering or architectural services." Comments?
  17. The link you choose may depend on whether you want to see a George W ad or not.[:-weepn]
  18. Tom, That raises a good question (I hope). It is my thinking - wrong as it may be - that the latest versions of ICC books are 'better' than older versions; at least in general. I know you are right about the version NY uses, but since we aren't code enforcement officers, shouldn't we just use the latest versions? Since nobody respects my authoritie (Cartman joke) anyway, I just reference the latest editions and make note of any MRCR's that NY has. Am I crazy as a loon?
  19. I just noticed that the lame titles I used as subject lines - "Excellent article" were immediately changed (by Mike, I suspect) to more descriptive titles. Then it dawned on me... Those are probably very important to the TIJ search engine. You probably already figured that out, but if you haven't, we can help TIJ a lot (I reckon) by choosing descriptive titles for our new topics. I'm shur Bonnys klass will help mee alot.
  20. Just finished reading Stephen Hazlett's article, "Low-Risk Reroof", in the latest Fine Hombuilding. I strongly recommend it! And I couldn't help notice that the pictures were taken by Daniel Morrison! How could the article be anything but quality.[^] Great job! (I put this topic in the 'chimney' forum too. It does a nice job on flashing!)

  22. Hi Tom, I have read enough of your posts to know you aren't a smart ass. We are here to learn, and sometimes that means you say something dumb. I have no problem with that here. It makes me smarter in the field. I believe we are looking at different versions of the IPC. I have the 2006 copy and the section I posted is 605.9, but.... I had not seen that disclaimer in the front. That section number has not changed, and you have helped me, friend. [^] I am pleased to owe you a beer if we have a TIJ get2gether. That's a cheap education, thanks!
  23. The Chapter title is: Water Supply and Distribution
  24. Absolutely, Captain! I just wanted visitors to know he has nothing to do with producing what you and I see as crap. I'm with ya!
  25. Ok, I must say I am very, very confused as to why W.J. appears in this thread's title. W.J. has done nothing for the last many years but fight for the consumer. The website link at the beginning of this thread would be W.J.'s antithesis. Oh.... that's the point! Ok, I still want to make sure that those who do not know W.J. do not link his name to such trash. He is brilliant!
