  1. My experience has been that most energy saving ideas cost more than they really save the homeowner. They also have a tendency to cause additional problems that were never thought about until they rear their ugly head! Once the government money is taken out of the equation those "Green" ideas tend to become brown and fade into the sunset!
  2. Would they not have to redesign the supporting structure and then tie it into the existing roof line? I'm not sure if I understand what you are trying to ask... Are they wanting to make it one long roofline instead of two independent roofs?
  3. I had one very similar about two weeks ago, I felt like I was in the Brady Bunch house! It was full of classic Knoll and Herman Miller furniture. Everything from a blender that retracted back into a space in the wall to a fold down cook top that came out of the wall. Home was on the market for less than 2 hours before they had multiple offers and ended up in a bidding war.
  4. I stopped wearing a tool belt 10+ years ago... I have a new "gear" or "tool" bag that I either keep in the kitchen or tote it with me if needed. My old tool bag was larger and it held a bunch of stuff I never used(same bag that Morgan postd a picture of by Duluth Trading). A few months ago I found a great bag that is smaller, has plenty of room to even hold my power screwdriver and even a bottle of water! Has a shoulder strap if I want, and plenty of side pockets. It is made by 511 Tactical, same folks that make great cargo pants. http://www.511tactical.com/All-Products ... l-Bag.html
  5. Has anyone tried the Nikon AW100? Any reviews? Kurt, I know you purchased one this past spring.... How is it doing?? I'm looking for a new camera that is more crudproof than anything.
  6. My son-in-law from North Mississippi is deploying with Parsons today for NJ. He has committed to a 3-4 week deployment. This will be his third deployment in the past 4 years. He and his father are driving up with a travel trailer that they will live in. They make pretty good money by not staying in hotels and they can pick up and move and not worry about a place to stay.
  7. $1500 to $2000 around here. Just had a client email me with a note saying my SWAG of $1600 was within $50 for the replacement of a Zinsco panel.
  8. Do you have fan forced heat? Space heaters? Gas? Electric? A dehumidifier can't hurt but Tom pointed out it could be many many things or combination of things that are causing it. It is just one of those things that when you have a cold surface and introduce a warmer component you will have condensation. Think about your car and how the windows fog until everything equalizes temperature wise. The same happens with your home.
  9. Sounds like you might have too much humidity in the home. Have you always had a condensation problem or has it just recently started?
  10. The major problem doing FEMA inspections is the time commitment that the contractors want. PaRR and Parsons want upwards of 4-6 week commitments or longer. If you have a business you basically shut the door to do the FEMA inspections. In the past when I did them, they did not let you deploy to your own state. When Katrina hit I lived in MS, I could not work in that state I had to work in LA or TX. I could have stayed in my own home, driven a few miles in my own truck and worked; but no, I had to fly to LA and rent a car and stay in a hotel.
  11. A simple AAV would solve the problem.....
  12. The price seems high for the value. I agree, I just don't think that most folks would really need all of the bells and whistles they offer.
  13. I see them often, mostly on larger homes. The older homes that I inspect with this system seem to always have dry basements.
  14. Thanks Marc, I scoured that website and missed that line!
  15. Does anyone know how long "House Wrap" WRB can be exposed to sunlight before it starts to degrade due to the UV light? I'm thinking it is around 6 months.

    Frozen Coil

Looks like a new package unit. I have seen new units ice when the installer does not properly charge the unit when it is installed.
  17. Chemicals(bleach, TSP, etc) sprayed on the home to clean it could be the culprit.
  18. Mike, what is the exterior cladding on the home?
  19. I have never seen cellulose insulation wet enough to cause stains like that. I guess it is possible in the photo of the wall cavity because the moisture would fall with gravity and collect at the base but the light fixture one I would be looking for another source for that stain.
  20. EDI at one time was the best training you could get for EIFS and moisture inspections several years back. I took their class and held a membership for many years in their organization. I think they still offer good information but their pricing seems to be extremely high.
  21. I think the MA law covers the selling agent only. If it is a buyers agent they an refer them, I think.... It as been years since I have looked at the MA law.
  22. We have an LG min-split ductless unit for our 700sf bonus room and it is great. The cost was $2250.
  23. I would consider what Morgan posted. Your radiant ceiling heat is old technology that uses a good amount of power for heating the home. A new central system would most likely save you on the power bill, make your home more comfortable and would increase its value if you ever sell it.
  24. That is pretty typical pressure in our area. All of the water storage tanks are several hundred feet above the homes on hilltops so pressure is not a problem. The pressure on the street side at my home is around 155 psi! I have it reduced to 65-70 psi inside the home.
