  1. I had to share this latest offering from the ASHI School.... Course Description: This mold inspection course is a comprehensive study of mold and moisture damage, and the effects thereof on structures. It is conveyed in a "bump-up" learning environment. Learning begins in an abstract form and then expands into a more formative development of specifics. Part one begins with Mold inspection basics which is a primer that covers: mold's history, types of, health concerns of, requirements for its growth, inspection methods for, sampling and testing of, individual and professional remediation practices. Next bump-up level is Part two which covers the following: aspects of mold's growth, types, conveyance systems, and discoveries through professional mold remediation practices. It will also cover proper use of PPE (personal protection equipment), safety, learning how to find the Red Flags of moisture intrusion and the theory of associated client Red Flag Symptoms caused by exposure to mold. Part three is a 4-part system expansion that delves deeper into all aspects of the inspection processes that inspectors will encounter in mold and moisture damage within structures. The culminating enhanced areas will be on use of equipment, sampling and testing, report writing based on findings, and marketing the business of environmental inspection techniques. Culminating enhanced areas....bump up learning environment......from the abstract to a more formative development of specifics...... Where do we find such men?
  2. I don't find it much nowadays, maybe once every several years, but it's intact. When we've opened walls with it, it's intact and functional. Maybe it's different elsewhere. Lots of it got installed badly....that'll make it fail real quick. We put it in a lot of Kalamazoo houses years ago. It's the only retrofit material that actually worked reasonably well.
  3. I'm sure. Yes, a mess, but certainly easier than a nipple and union. Nipples and unions require a modest bit of thought and facility with materials....flex does not. That's why one finds flex all the places it shouldn't be.
  4. That's an interesting observation. I did the substitution and yep, it's the same. Thread drift..... Am I the only person that can't fathom the organization and style of Inspectipedia? It's like a Dr. Bronners bottle, only with inspecting stuff.
  5. That isn't UFFI. It looks like smashed down Low density fiberglass. For future reference, UFFI is more white than yellow....it's only very slightly yellowish. Never seen pure white UFFI around here.
  6. UFFI is slightly yellowish. When you break some off and rub it between your fingers it goes to super fine powder. Peanut butter doesn't describe it; it's really dry and powdery when you smash it.
  7. They were always a loser for me. Haven't done one in years. Like Les, they'd want me to drive to the middle of nowhere for $50 and then cut the grass or shovel the walk. Fill the pipeline in other ways if possible.
  8. There is no good reason for it. It's probably corporate legal telling engineering to spec it for some obscure or imagined reason. I think they're trying to limit the hambone installation practices made possible with flex in the hands of morons ending up inside their enclosures.
  9. Yeah, Reuben's a good guy.
  10. I'd probably put something in my report regarding insurance company's possibly not writing a policy on a house with aluminum wiring....customers want to know that kind of stuff. I'd put in the usual recommendations and caveats. Huge amounts of the free and unfree world is wired with aluminum, from the northern bush to the Caribbean, South America, and vast swaths of China. Seems to work OK. Our friend Reuben has a few decent points to make about it in his locale....
  11. Mfg's. spec trumps code. Not so much yes and no. According to the label, it's no....yes?
  12. Yeah. Isn't that how it's always been?
  13. It is an extremely lousy bit of phrasing describing what most of us already know. The author has a future in writing HI boilerplate for report software.
  14. Choose the mountain where you wanna take a stand. Doing it with some dipshit small fry landlord isn't the wise choice. You already got the muni guy owning up to not having jurisdiction. What's your next move? You got next to nothing. You wanna mud wrestle about mold with a peabrain? You can do better. You might also talk to an attorney about the efficacy of publishing the landlords information on the internet.
  15. Just went thru the (better) pics @ Flicker.....cellulose. Cellulose has fire retardent treatment which could be part of your respiratory issue, in addition to the particulate and mold. Best shot is get out. You can do better.
  16. Age doesn't matter so much. Drainage, underlayment, valley liners, drip edge, flashing details, and all that other stuff the shingle mfg's. don't talk about does matter. Everyone thinks shingles are the most important part of a roof and that they last 20 years. Not so. Roofing performs as well as it drains. The same shingle, installed on a 3:12 pitch and a 10:12 pitch will have vastly different performance life. Same with flashing details. So, like Marc, I don't think about age too much. I only report it because people expect me to.
  17. Yeah. Great Northern.
  18. White on the iPad. The stuff in the joists looks grey, so yeah, probably cellulose. The white threw me. Also, blown into joist cavities with poly sheeting....sounds like cellulose. Sure looks like white clumpy asbestos on an iPad tho....
  19. All true, but pure white cellulose? The white part is what threw me. And, it doesn't look like powder, it looks fibrous and clumpy. Sure looks like white fiberglass
  20. It could be an asbestos containing material. Whie, fibrous looking to me. Doesn't look like powder.
  21. You'd trust everything else the installer did? In the amount of time it would take to track it all down, we'd just pull new and know for sure.
  22. Anyone stupid enough to run green hots is stupid enough to do a lot of other stuff. I'd take it all out. Then again, we're all EMT. Can you pull new wire?
  23. Yes, I believe you're right.
  24. And don't forget foot rubs.
  25. That's funny.
