Youch. What authority made the determination? Local, State, EPA? It's kinda silly. $50k+ to clean up a small patch of residential dirt.....

It's the "at all" part that can go awry. Call a tank removal company, they soil test or otherwise open the door for problems. Call a couple guys with shovels, it's gone Saturday morning and no one seems to notice or care. A pool company might stumble on the tank and fear a lawsuit and refuse to touch it. If the locals don't care, I'd be calling guys with shovels and a load of backfill, pool guy later.

EPA doesn't regulate farm or residential tanks <1100 (I think it's 1100) gallons if the fuel is for use on site and doesn't involve commercial activity. (I don't know how the commercial part squares with the farm part.) If the state and local regs disown it and the EPA doesn't regulate it, it's kind of open territory with wide latitude for lawyerly opinions. Around here, it's all speak no, hear no, see no....everyone looks the other way on residential tanks. A customer of mine is director for EPA District 5...asked him about it...he was noncommittal indicating they don't want to get involved in residential tank issues unless there's soil contamination, and even then, they tend to keep the blinders on. It's just a teeny residential tank surrounded by Chicago, Gary, and massive Superfund cleanup sites. Per Kibbel, what's the question?
  4. Beginning Christmas with a discussion of cat urine odor...... Label it DeStinkerAtor, and have a label of a cat pissing with the red circle and slash (the universal "no" sign). Better yet, ask Katen what to do.....(with the cats)....
  5. Nah, I'm a heartless jerk sometimes. I wish everyone would read everything that's available about radon and not just the EPA stuff. Folks wouldn't get so worked up about it.
  6. It's certainly possible that the problem comes from systems that aren't installed satisfactorily. Lots of them out there. Still, are we arguing that the correct level is now 1/2 of what the guvmint indicates is an action level? Not a toxic threshold or physiologically significant level, but a performance level? Isn't it OK to get to 4 pCi/L?
  7. You may not get there. If my memory isn't totally blown, I recall the guvmint establishing 4pCi/L as a performance level. What's that mean? In areas of the country with extreme radon issues, if one installs a state of the art mitigation system, the lowest feasible obtainable levels will be 4pCi/L. IOW, it's really, really low, and you may not be able to get lower. The international scientific community continues to argue about what is "safe". The US guvmint science behind the proclamations of what's "safe" and what's not is sketchy, and if one bothers to take the time to read the papers and studies our guvmint has produced to support it's radon program, one would most likely conclude that much of the issue might just be made up to suit the agencies preconceived notions.

    hydronics

Not necessarily more costly to set up, and definitely not costly to run (if it's set up correctly). Steam can be remarkably efficient and comfortable. Once you get them balanced and tuned, they're amazing. The problems come from really lousy conversions to natural gas or other dipsquat alterations. And, there's no particular danger with low pressure steam systems. I love my steam system. There's only one thing better than pulling up close to a hot chunk of cast iron on a cold winter evening......

Hard to know what to say without a few clues.

Is it hot water or steam?
  13. I took mine to Uhaul. A friendly young man getting his degree in automotive engineering works summers at a local office. He said something about having to run something back to the battery. Maybe that's what he was doing. Cost about $250. Seemed fair.
  14. wow. Can't do all 4 windows at the same time?
  15. I'm not a car guy. I've got a '14 Xterra and when I put the hitch on and hooked up the wiring....it was all #16 or thereabouts. When did this stuff with the wiring start?
  16. Calling this place an attic isn't accurate. It was overhead space of the 18,000sf mansion of the widow of Cyrus McCormick. 24" thick solid walls, iron truss, iron "joists", massive timbers reinforced with iron, etc., etc. The tank was just a teeny little component in what felt like a cathedral space. When constructed, this place had it's own coal fired steam powered electrical generation plant. At one time, they had steam snowmelt for an approximate 5 miles of trails and roads on the property. I should dig out the slides and see if I can convert them to digital....
  17. Yeah, nice one. Never seen an ice water fixture. I had one where a shower valve said "Rain", and it was piped to a large (1000 gal. +-) copper lined tank in the attic. The tank was supplied by a connection to the gutters with an overflow outlet back to the exterior. The same tank supplied the laundry down in the basement. I guess the residents wanted "soft" water for rinsing their hair and to get whiter whites and brighter brights. This was pre-digital camera....I got it on a slide somewhere.....

I think I feel sick..... [:-paperba
  19. You want drywall for a thermal barrier anyway. Foam without mass inside it isn't particularly effective.

    roof exhaust hood

That's the 8" out of the fan. The gooseneck (9" square) slides over it. Standard back porch hatch to the roof. I'm going to have a garden up there next Spring. Tomatoes mostly.

    roof exhaust hood

It's a little loud when it's in full burst mode @ 800 cfm. At lower rpm's it's remarkably quiet. There's a baffle on top of the hood, and we stuck another one in the 8" duct....gasketed, springs so it doesn't rattle.

    roof exhaust hood

An 800 cfm range hood. New range with an 18,000 btu wok burner needs good exhaust. 8" pipe straight up out of the fan, through the roof. The radius minimizes turbulence and static pressure. The sucker really moves some air.

    Drones?

So, maybe a half hour to 3/4 hour, make it an hour tops with logistics of setup and take down and misc. dinking around.....(?).

    Drones?

How long's it take to fly inspect a 3 story job? Let's say it's a larger than average house, 4-5 valleys, maybe a dormer or two, a couple chimneys, maybe 5000-6000sf.
  25. Thought this was nice. Fabricated with hand tools. Every seam and edge hemmed and the soldering is perfect. Delivered pre-primed. Just gotta torch and strip it this weekend. Click to Enlarge 42.88 KB Click to Enlarge 46.87 KB
