  1. Actually, on second glance, the 2nd heat exchanger is in the big tank, not the boiler. It warms up the water in the tank. Still ok though.
  2. I just gave the pics a quick glance, but I think you're fine. It's a boiler with a secondary heat exchanger for domestic water heating and a reservoir/holding tank for domestic hot water. I see these systems in various forms; they're great. This one might have some fine tuned stuff I'm too tired to see right now.
  3. Bill, you're the best. Thank you for your involvement in this. If you need me to do something, please let me know.
  4. Exactly. No one is going to give a shit about code cites. There's way too many unknowns to start dictating repairs predicated on codes that aren't in force in Chicago. Absent any accurate observation of the last year's IAQ, how can one be recommending anything?
  5. That's where I'd start. Source control trumps everything. There are monster dehumidifier's that could dry it out, but it's starting from the wrong point, and you're fighting Mother Nature nonstop.
  6. My guess is you've got yourself a building science laboratory in East Village.
  7. I all y'all had gone Maytag before they got bought and ruined, you wouldn't have these problems.
  8. That's it; it's the stuff. Thanks much.
  9. Interesting. Big deal at the time. Lots of colors. But, I'm not sure this stuff is Medina Sandstone; it's got the creamiest texture, where I am not even entirely sure it's sandstone, but that's as close a description as I can make.
  10. From the SW. Shipping stone from the SW in 1880 would surprise me. I didn't know there was red sandstone in NY.
  11. It does, sort of, except when you get up close, it's the creamiest smooth small granule sandstone of exceptional characteristics. It's sweet stuff.
  12. It's a kind of sandstone I've not seen before; heavily striated with color (color not so apparent in my lo-rez pics, but definitely colored). I think it's a silica cemented sandstone, but the red makes me think SW, and it would have been something to have been importing red sandstone in 1888. Those striations are coming apart nicely on the sills and lintels, and I see all the other stuff. I'm just looking to see if there's a name for the stone, or if anyone else has any familiarity with it. Click to Enlarge 97.64 KB Click to Enlarge 91.3 KB Click to Enlarge 50.46 KB

True. It didn't exist until right about now.
  14. Plumbing brings out folks creativity. It's like building blocks and infants; every kid manages to pile stuff up in their own unique way.
  15. Good article. The links about the rip off seminars are worth reading too. Anyone that's ever watched 2 minutes of those stupid shows (that's about all I can stand) knows these guys make money by beating some schmoe handyman down to their bottom dollar to do crap work. I can't stand those stupid ****ing shows.

If it's a gig for younger men, why the dearth of younger men? Crawlspaces?
  18. I get that. I know what direct vent means. I was trying to figure out the direct-exhaust vent part. I'd just never heard it before I read Joe's piece.
  19. Well, here's why I asked..... I got Joe L's latest ASHRAE thing, he has a glossary of terms, and he lists this as the term applying to any fan vented appliance where the vented air is from inside the pressure barrier, i.e., any Cat IV appliance that uses interior combustion air or a power vent water heater. He lists direct vent as any appliance where the vented air is from outside the pressure barrier, which is what I understand to be correct. Because before, I agreed with you guys. Now, I don't know. Kibbel's explanation would be in line with Joe's, near as I can figure.
  20. That's the right term for a water heater that's power vented out the wall, isn't it? Same thing with a Cat IV furnace that gets it's combustion air from the interior, yes?
  21. I haven't seen a place that pristine in a long time. Very cool.
  22. Man, you are finding the cool stuff lately!

  24. In that age attic, condensation problems would be somewhere way down the probability list.
