  2. I like mine crispy (with 200 amps)! I've never seen this before yesterday... Still hairy! Click to Enlarge 54.03 KB
  3. I have to ask, how did you write this up?
  4. The new furnace is gas, the old york hp is shot... i recommended it be replaced. Thanks guys.
  5. I just got done looking at a place that was in really bad shape (current owner is in prison and never did much to the place...). My question is this, it had an 11 year old HE carrier furnace, but it was hooked up to a 24 year old york heat pump. What issues can you run into with this as far as only using the cooling functions of the heat pump (didnt work anyway) with a newer furnace?
  6. This is the first one of these i have run into, and i must say im a bit confused. They are not too common in my parts. It was all enclosed and it didnt look too old. My code book didnt make sense so i thought i would ask you guys. Any additional information you can give me on this setup would be greatly appreciated (why two serial numbers?). There are two serial numbers. The upper part of the boilers where the oil burner is: model #: G115/4 and the S# 08188060-01-3182-1493 and the lower parts Model #: LT 160/1 and S#05192267-01-3076-0060 Thanks for the help Click to Enlarge 13.06 KB
  7. Serial Number FD5D3075060205681 i thought it was an 81, another HI said Feb 02 The unit was dirty but it didnt look too old... what is the new decoder for Ruud/Reem? My decoder says the last 2 #'s are the year.
  8. Thanks
  9. I guess this is a three part question. 1) How available are residential steam boilers (i live in the philadelphia area). 2) If the home has a one pipe radiator setup, can you still convert to a normal boiler without installing all new pipes and radiators? 3) What do you tell clients that have an OLD steam boiler with a one pipe system?
  10. Thanks guys.
  11. Thanks Jim, and yes I was using a non-contact voltage detector. And yes, i have noticed that they give false readings often, usually it is a weaker signal though.
  12. It was only a single wire than ran back and forth, when it passed through the first ceramic housing it went from being fabric sheated to bare copper. I thought of it being an antenna but would that show a possive continuity reading for an antenna? The wire came up from never never land (from an unknown area).
  13. I inspected a home today that was around 80 years old. I assumed that i would run into k and t somewhere in the home and sure enough i did. I did however see something that i never saw before, and i cant figure out why this would be done (see below pictures). A live feed of knob and tube came into this section of a side attic and simply zig zagged back and forth, un-sheathed (?), and just terminated at the end of the zig zag. Why would this be done? Like i said, my continuity tester read that it was live. Thanks. Click to Enlarge 48.19 KB Click to Enlarge 50.23 KB
  14. Yea, since it was hooked up to some OLD knob and tube, I didn't want to even touch it! (and it didnt work).
  15. I'm assuming it's an old switch? (didn't work) Any ideas? Click to Enlarge 41.26 KB Click to Enlarge 36.67 KB

  17. You know, i really appreciate and value this site. Everytime i post anything, i get some smart ass remark for an answer. I really dont want to have attitude, im a nice person, really, i guess i feel cornered sometimes and lash out in defense. IM sorry, and thank you, Jim, for your informative answer. It makes total sense why the line would be smaller now (thanks). Usually when i see these grinder pumps they are only for the fixtures that are below the level of the sewer line (ejecting waste into a higher pipe that exits the foundation via gravity), this house had the entire house going into the grinder pump, rather than only the bathroom and bar plumbing from the basement. It was the first time i saw this. sorry for the attitude.
  18. One more thing... can somebody "Google" why there would be a valve on the street side of this pump? And, could somebody "Google" why you want the main sewer line to be smaller in the first place? I could really use a seasoned "Googler" to help me out with this one...THANKS IN ADVANCE!
  19. If everyone here "Googled" everything, what would be the point of this site???
  20. Thanks there Erby... should a known...
  21. This was in a ten year old house...
  22. Can anyone shed some light on this grinder pump for me? The whole house's waste plumbing was plumbed to it. It went from 4" coming into it (also some 1 1/2" - 2" going in to it from various other fixtures) and then the main pipe that exited the foundation was 2" i believe. Ive never seen the main sewer line a small line like that, and it has a valve on it? why? If anyone can post a response and maybe an article on such a pump and its bene Click to Enlarge 32.21 KB Click to Enlarge 42.04 KB Click to Enlarge 20.54 KB Click to Enlarge 37.08 KBfits, i would greatly appreciate it. 23. so... what did you do with the cash?
  24. Thanks alot guys. It is still interesting to me that this would be allowed knowing that the intake and exhaust locations are so close to each other...
  25. It was a Payne, 10 years old.
