  1. The only thing that really matters is that you're still out there doing it. Here's a thirty year old that i just pulled out of the deep end of the closet. Know what it is? Click to Enlarge 34.99 KB Rickenbacker? 2nd guess - Gretsch? Too late - must have posted just before I did. I've never heard of that brand of gutiar.
  2. Really liked the last blues video (have a soft spot for the blues). Nice riffs W, very nice indeed. One of the better concerts I attended was Clapton with his From the Cradle tour. That boy can play gutiar.
  3. Good eye - no wonder you're a H.I. I didn't see the upper pickup askew. It looks a lot like the Les Paul though. Here's a pic of Neil Young with "Old Black", a Les Paul.
  4. Nice Les Paul W. Still got it?
  5. Not sure I follow the logic about a leak causing an increase in propane use. By bringing in a large amount of makeup water the boiler fires more?
  6. No. With out glycol (chilled water system) it's next to impossible to get 32 degree discharge air for any length of time (with any velocity). The conditions that would allow this to happen would manifest itself in a service call way before this type of event. In commercial systems you often see freeze t/stats that will shut the system down - manual reset as well (this is apparent with economizers). It is best to get a temperature/pressure chart for different Freon types. You'll be able to see how different pressures/temperatures react. Post here if you have any further questions - will help if I can.
  7. As kids we use to go out for rides in the country quite often. My father use to give us a nickle for every sheep we saw or a penny for every horse. We would sometimes pass a church that had a sign saying "Jesus Saves" to which my mother would reply "I wish to Christ I could" (save money). When she would have a lot of laundry to do she use to say "What do I look like, Mrs George Washingmachine?" My father was in the Navy in WWII and my mother worked in a factory - she was Rosie the Riveter - I miss her.
  8. My home inspection business is not there to promote Brinks or any other ancillary business for that matter. I'll leave the lunch money on the table.
  9. I'll never get involved with calling and setting up a contractor for a client. Here's the reason why. I posted over on the ASHI board about a client that had a ceiling leak due to ice damming. They sent an email notifying me that they were putting in a "claim". They also asked me to supply them with the name and phone number of the mold remediation company I secured for them (attic had a slight amount of mold). I finally met with the couple and they didn't have a problem with the home inspection but since I was the first link in the "mold" chain they thought they would start with me. I told them that I make it a habit not to refer contractors for this very reason. I have a hard enough time accounting for my own actions. I know your trying to be helpful but no good dead goes unpunished.
  10. Hey Jim: Here is a pretty good write up on the subject: http://www.proctoreng.com/articles/bigger.html A tidbit from it: The ability of the air conditioner to remove moisture (latent capacity) is lowest at the beginning of the air conditioner cycle. The moisture removed from the indoor air is dependent upon the indoor coil temperature being below the dew-point temperature of the air. The moisture then wets the indoor coil and, should the unit run long enough, will begin to flow off the coil and be removed out of the condensate drain. For short cycles, the coil does not have time to operate at the low temperature and when the unit stops, the moisture on the coil evaporates back into the indoor air. Thus, in humid climates, a properly sized air conditioner will do a far better job of removing moisture from the air than oversized units The article is a little simplistic but gets the point across. If I have a four ton air conditioner but only a two ton load it will drop the room temperature quickly (sensible load) but won't stay on long enough to remove moisture (latent load). Coil design however is out of my league - you'll need a guy with a pocket protector for that discussion. Hope this helps.
  11. Could be the 55th week of '36. Back then people had more time.
  12. It's not an air circulation problem but a problem with the unit not running enough. With an oversized system it will cool the room space quicker than it can remove humidity. As setpoint is reached the unit shuts down but the humidity still remains. There are some fixes for an oversized system but they really only make sense for a commercial system. With residential it would be a better bet just to bite the bullet and replace it.
  13. When an a/c system is ovesized it will maintain house temperature but will not dehumidify properly due to the fact that it doesn't run long enough - cold clammy feel.. The longer the system runs the better dehumidification. Not good for an a/c system to short cycle either which happens when they are too big for the load. I've never heard of this type of thing causing moisture problems though, just comfort problems.
  14. It's a great gig for them - a whole sales force with very little cost to the S,G & A. Can't blame them for trying eh?
  15. They just called me two days ago and followed up with this email. I asked them if they could pay for my hospitalization, salary and mileage as long as I was was selling for them. They declined. 16. They trapped it too - how thoughtful.
  17. By the looks of it I'd say from the early 60's.
  18. I've watch Ben Bernanke, Fed Chairman being interviewed on 60 minutes and he did a 30 minute speech, to a bankers group, that was televised on C-Span. It's refreshing to see someone in government actually speak articulately, not make up his own new words and speak for thirty minutes without looking at a note card. I give him an A+ just for that alone. Oh ya, the guy is pretty bright too.
  19. Most of the older homes in our area have STC foundations. I've only seen one that was badly damaged due to prolong moisture exposer (in fact I think I posted pictures and Bill responded). Poured concrete and CMU are porous but STC seems to be a sponge. It really loves to transfer moisture.
  20. I believe that the sleeving of pipe applies to black pipe (gas line) going through concrete/mortar. It will corrode the pipe. Plastic is impervious to this.
  21. It's very common to see them installed upside down - the one in my condo is installed upside down. You change the position of the induced draft fan to accommodate. You just need to make sure the unit is a convertible type. This can be accomplished by getting the model number and checking.
  22. I consider Trane to be the best unit out there with Carrier a very close second. York, Rheem and Ruud would be second tier. Goodman & Coleman = junk. If contractors are trying to substitute the cheap equipment there is a reason and it's not to be helpful to you. It's called profit margin.
  23. Where did you get it Kurt?
  24. I'm with Richard as well. As soon as all the businesses I go to every week start giving me a discount then I'll start too.
