  1. I agree with Richard that a furnace in a carport is not "in a building". If questioned on my call, I wouldn't hesitate contacting the manufacturer for confirmation of my interpretation.
  2. Brandon,It was a subsequent post that was completely worthless to this topic, this website and our profession. Erby,See my reply to Brandon above.
  3. No need to reply to posts advertising products/services or link-droppers. They're against TIJ rules and moderators do a good job deleting them. Quoting them just doubles the links to their sites.
  4. Uh, Chad is an AHJ.
  5. Sorry that I didn't get back to you the other day. I don't know of any purpose (function of the house) for the boxes. I do see many cubby-hole compartments built into stone walls and occasionally into chimneys and large fireplace walls. Almost all chestnut and oak timber-frames here.
  6. My current panels look like they're full of spaghetti. I didn't even put the covers on for 6 years. It's been a long time since psych class, but I think the opposite of anal-retentive (Chad) is anal-expulsive (Me).
  7. That mural wasn't for the kids. It was just for showing off to their friends when they had dinner parties. Just like the ridiculous foyers and decks that could be be heliports.
  8. Yes. NJ requires well casings extend at least 12" above grade, unless the casing is in a well pit or pump house.
  9. I have one with the vise for edge planing and a flush-vise for surface planing. It's from the early 19th century. I use it regularly.

  11. Joe, Sorry to have not replied sooner. Mom passed away Thursday night, then Saturdays storm placed hundreds of trees in all/any roads leading to home. Power has finally been restored late this afternoon. I don't see anything there that would benefit from an epoxy sealer, filler or consolidant. It needs repairs and the typical, traditional repair for hand-hewn timbers is what Mike O'. suggested, although lumberyards only have milled timbers. There's plenty of salvaged hewn timbers and hand-planed floor planks available in these parts.
  12. It's not that the woody peckers found insects. They "sound" to find voids in wood. Once a void is discovered, they open it up to see if the void was created by, and harboring, insects. They do the same thing with aluminum siding and metal roofing. They're announcing to the bird community that this is their territory.
  13. It's the same arrangement that I've seen in every dentist office and lab I've inspected. Its for the sink dedicated to washing the alginate (dental impression-making gel) off the plates and rinse the plaster molds. Google "Gleco trap" - it's UPC approved.
  14. Baptisteries are not regular plumbing fixtures. They're in the same category as ornamental fountains. If they're connected to a potable water supply, they need to be protected from back siphonage. There also may be other exemptions, like Sacrariums don't have to be trapped, vented or drain into the sanitary waste system.
  15. Very nice. I want the purple one. Do you know how low you can set the resolution? I rarely need more than 1 megapixel, much less 14.
  16. That doesn't bother me - many here are opinionated. What does bother me is folks signing up, posting some things that appear to be relevant to a discussion, then editing all those posts to include a keyword link. We're inspectors Bobby - we notice stuff. See ya filter boy.
  17. Type X drywall is not non-combustible. It has no fire rating by itself. The fire rating is when it is used as a fire-resistant system. There is no exclusion for the required clearance from an appliance vent. It wouldn't matter if the garage was lined with asbestos sheets. There is no exception. A fire could spread through that chase.
  18. Where can I find that in the NEC? I believe 1/4" is the minimum, not max.
  19. My old plumbing design books show vented s-traps were standard for quite some time. This illustration is from a 1910 publication. Click to Enlarge 59.01 KB
  20. ...dilapidated old Victorian era home. It's made of 100% unaltered Legos. Scroll down this page to see some detail pics.
  21. There are foams for "draft-stopping" of gaps and openings. Fire-retardant foams are sprayed over a fire to extinguish it. That's a chase, not a chimney. There should be a sheet-metal "firestop/spacer" where the gas vent passes through the drywall.
  22. That's probably one of the lithium solution products intended to make powdering masonry surfaces "harder". If you don't correct the water and condensation issues, instead of powdering when the bricks disintegrate, it'll be chunks.
  23. I've struggled with it too. On the left column of the home page, below "Recent Events", click on the button labelled "Add Event". On that page, click on "Submit an Event to the Event Calendar". On that page, click on the day of your event. On this page, choose "Event Submissions - Tell Us About It" from the drop-down menu and click "Go". Now you can fill out the form and submit. It should appear in the events column and calendar just as soon as one of the editors approves it.
  24. NFPPA 211, NFPA 54 & The solid-fuel burning appliance listing.
  25. I've seen it on late '40s to mid '50s slab homes, when the block perimeter wasn't originally parged.
