  1. Desktop -main unit Large laptop - when I used to do reports in field 10" laptop - great buy, awesome for travel and carrying, 6 hour batt. life., can work around the house away from my desk cuz its so light. I'm just embarassed at the impulsive purchase of the 10" laptop. I really don't need it. Could've used the money for a Ridgid See Snake or more money toward an IR cam.
  2. I use three computers (don't ask. . . ) It's a hassle trying to keep all the files current and in synch with each other. Any ideas?
  3. Does anyone have any experience with this type of service? If so, whom do you recommend?
  4. I really can't see what that is for sure. Is it actually a screed or an attempt at some sort of control / expansion joint?
  5. Another trap in which most folks seem to fall (including myself) is thinking that more stuff on the paper equals a better report; more words, more headers, more pics, more colors, more footnotes, more fluff, etc. Now, we're committing to fluff-ifying every page which leads to non-sensical and hard-to-read reports. Simple is best, in my humble opinion. It also makes for the best reading.
  6. Write how you'd explain the defect to your client using your words with your style. Also, search "inspectorspeak" on this board for a multitude of other comments.
  7. I concur. Jackson was brilliant wasn't he?
  8. Brass takes more heat, yes?
  9. Alright, dumb question . . . Is this the "cap and trade" stuff that everyone's been talking about? And, no I don't watch hardly any T.V. or spend time online (except here, really) - that' why I'm pretty much un-informed. P.S. I have been listening to a lot of XM satellite recently - what with the newly launched Michael Jackson tribute channel . . .
  10. Yea, I could see how any Joe out there who's not really plugged in to an organization or visits TIJ wouldn't have a clue about licensing. The only reason I knew is 'cuz of TIJ (and secondly, ASHI). I would think it'd be like this for any new licensing process. How would the un-informed become . . . informed? It's good DOL is making the outreach effort.
  11. Kevin, you mention that Dragon is about $100. I'm assuming that's the Standard version. I'm not sure Standard would work for me. Does anyone have advice or experience with the Preferred or Professional level product?
  12. Ahhh. In my vernacular, it sounds like a heat exchanger; a way to keep the heating water separate from the potable water. FWIW, these can usually be installed for a few hundred bucks. Looks like they may have paid a few thousand for that thing. Wonder if it works any "better?"
  13. Michael, which photo program are you using? Nice work, by the way.
  14. I didn't click the link, but what's the purpose of a "super duper tempering box?"
  15. I've tried to lighten my load many times. I'm a man of laziness and convenince. I can work better when things are right at my disposal. Here's the charger I'm using. Click to Enlarge 40.12 KB P.S. I keep my light on the low output 95% of the time, not the high output.
  16. Interesting idea about the clear plastic and caulk. I've had the privilege of laying plastic in two crawl spaces. It wasn't easy rolling the plastic from one end to the other and keeping the plastic in place where you wanted it. If you use caulk, wouldn't the plastic just pull right off the concrete as you worked across the space? Also, I always recommend black plastic. Honestly I can't remember where I got that from because it isn't in any requirements of which I'm aware. I do know it eliminates the greenhouse effect if there's ambient light that makes it in to the crawl space via the vents.
  17. Fits like a glove. Click to Enlarge 57.14 KB
  18. Yup, what Kurt's using. Bought a 3 pack somewhere online for like. . . .$25 or something.
  19. I'm still running off one battery. 15 inspections and counting. . .
  20. I usually insert some general statement to the fact that you don't need to pay me a whole bunch of money to see the things that are obvious. Then I say it's outside the scope of the report to itemize each individual cosmetic defect unless it's an indication of some other, larger issue.
  21. Any possiblity that stuff existed long before the fans were installed?
  22. Alright, I had an extra minute and Googled a bit. The audits must be performed by two folks: 1) a RESNET Rater although it doesn't specifically state a HERS rating is required. 2) BPI analyst The website also touts the cost of an audit to be about $200-$300 but in the same paragraph also says that "Auditors set their own prices." Right now, if I have to do a HERS rating, it's taking me a full day plus. $200-$300 won't cut it for me.
  23. The process of an "energy audit" is extremely vague and I can understand the public's confusion and frustration. I would think the wisened, sage bureaucrats of Austin have adopted a set of specific criteria which defines exactly what method constitutes an audit? If not, the other municipalities keeping an eye on Austin to see how the program works have a piss-poor example of how to mandate audits.
