kurt
Same thing in China. Stone or tile on rafters and purlins.
Denray
Some older not so well built roofs. Yet everything is older over there. Almost everything is built to last. Lots of tile in Switzerland. Click to Enlarge 60.95 KB Click to Enlarge 56.59 KB Click to Enlarge 28.72 KB
mjr6550
Regarding the second photo, I suppose if it has lasted a couple hundred years, maybe the roof won't collapse.
Denray
The ridge beam in that middle of the three photos busted. Only a few sway back viewed out of hundreds still looking good.
John Kogel
Yeah that roof leaks, pass the vino. []
Jim Katen
In Italy these are by far the most popular shingles. . . . I had a customer from Italy. He was amazed by our roofs. Customer: Why do you cover your roofs with little pieces of paper? Jim: They're not just paper. They're fiberglass paper soaked in asphalt with ceramic granules on top. Customer: And they keep the water out? Jim: Sure. Customer: For how long? Jim: For 20 years or so. Then we install new ones. Customer: Why don't you just install permanent shingles in the first place? Jim: For Americans, 20 years is permanent. Customer: You Americans are so funny. Jim Baird
...stack 'em if you got 'em... ...my visit to this little town on Italy's Ligurian coast found all the rooftops had regular placement of rocks on rooftop edges. Not sure what for. Click to Enlarge 78.8 KB
