  6. Will that makes sense. How can you expect the unit to operate in two separate modes at one time. What I have learned is when you have two indoor units, both thermostats have to be in the same mode for the system to respond to a cooling or heating demand. You cannot have one in heat and the other in cool and expect it to work. All thermostats need to be in same mode for the system to provide a temperature change.
  7. To meet or exceed the lateral resistance of wood decking: How big should this cross bracing be? How many cross braces should be there? What sort of fasteners should be used and how many? One cross brace. I might try a 2x10 diagonal from outside corner of deck to opposite ledger. 3 screws in each joist. 3" deck screws would do. A steel corner iron could do this, fastened right. "Deck" screws are not rated for structural applications.

  14. If you have access to a mass spectrometer for chemical analysis, a scanning electron microscope for fracture analysis and a metallurgical lab equipped for processing specimens for microscopic analysis it would be my please to serve you.
  15. If you were to dig a little deeper into the laminate flooring issue you would likely find that the testing procedures used by the retailer and the TV show are different. It is my understanding that the retailer tested its product in its final, delivered form. The TV show disassembled the products than tested the individual components.
  16. I have spent a number of years as a forensic metallurgical engineer in my life. The number of reasons that steel corrosion occurs are endless. Each individual case of excessive corrosion must be evaluated on its own history. One should not try to make a general observation that encompasses all steel corrosion. The corrosion could be caused by stray electrical currents, variations in steel composition, as Steven suggested, the composition of adjacent materials and even to the air that the steel is exposed.

  18. For some time there's been a requirement to provide lateral restraint at the bottom of columns that are more than 48 inches high. (407.3) The 2014 changes don't say anything about this, but I have been seeing all posts restrained at the bottom in new construction for the last several months. I'm not sure what's driving it. May be local amendments. Georgia has so many that I am constantly researching the changes.
  19. Most of the steel used for modern lintels is most likely a 1020 steel hot rolled product. The primary difference between the products you encounter is the surface treatment of the steel and the installation of the wall flashing. You can purchase galvanized steel lintels but I rarely see them in my market. Stainless steel angle is also available. If the flashing is screwed the only thing that will stand up to the water intrusion is stainless steel. If the water intrusion is that bad you have other problems.

  21. The hammer option is the best choice. Quick and easy and difficult to argue with the findings. Most of you have probably heard this story before. A new home builder is doing a walk through with the buyer. The buyer is obsessed with drywall issues. After awhile the builder gets frustrated, goes to his truck and gets a hammer. The next drywall issue the buyer points out the builder pulls his hammer out and knocks a hole in the wall. Next drywall issue same thing. Hole in the wall. The buyer screams "What are you doing?". The builder responds with "I just wanted to make sure that my drywall contractor could see your problem".
