  1. That is my first thought as well. What gas fired appliances are in the house? Have you confirmed that they are venting outside and that the flues is not bloked?
  2. I talked with th buyer today and he got an over the phone quote of $5000 to remove it. He said he gave the sqft, etc. Seems low to me? I asked he keep me informed of how things turn out when it is actually removed.
  3. Safety drift. During an OSHA 10 course I attended last winter, the subject of respirators and paper masks was discussed at length. According to them, paper masks do absolutely nothing to stop the particulates that cause harm. According to them, these masks only stop what your body's natural defense system already does on it's own. The crap you cough up. I know you didn't mention what type of face mask you went back for. Just thought I'd pass this along in case folks weren't aware. It was quite a surprise to everyone there. Good point of discussion for those who don't wear a mask. Yes I use a nose/mouth facepiece with 2 3M P100 filters. I've gotton out of the habit of wearing it all the time, just when something looks bad, I go and get it. I know I should do better. There is no hanta virus around here.
  4. A week or two ago I want in a 1920’s attic in this same town and found zero insulation – which blew my mind. This week I found what looks like bricks of asbestos scattered everywhere – which blows my mind even more. Some were small the size of a square baseballs. Other pieces were 2 – 3 feet long. It was all over the 1200 sqft attic. As soon as I stuck my head up the scuttle hole and saw this stuff I thought “hey that looks like asbestosâ€
  5. Perhaps a chimney fire? I would recommend a chimney sweep do a level II inspection.
  6. Sure sounds to damn hot to me. Seems I've read or heard that a properly vent attic should be close to the outside temp.
  7. If the outlet is ungrounded then you should not have a 3 prong outlet. Instead of replacing the 3 prong outlets with 2 prong they filled in the hole. However, that does not make sense in a 4 year old house.
  8. I would not want me name on any of that mess - call for a engineer for sure.
  9. I don't see how you would damage it, just by flushing it. If it is an electric water heater be sure the power is off before "draining" it. I tell my customers to flush them once a year. Which reminds me it has been 3-4 years since I last flushed mine. Hum - It looks like a nice day to wash the cat.
  10. True it was easy - Good point.
  11. I know many of us have seen this before, but it just blows my mind that for 90 years, no one bothered to place insulation in this attic. Granted in 1920 when this house was built coal was cheap, people were not as energy savvy as they are today. But what about the people that lived here in the 70’s 80’s, last year? Didn’t anyone ever wonder why their bills were so high, or why the house was so cold? Didn’t anyone ever go into the attic and say has there is no insulation up here. We know you can’t bury K&T under insulation, but I don’t think that is why insulation was not added. I just think the house has a long history of dumb owners. 12. Yea, my wife’s comfort factor is way higher then mine, something that keeps us from sharing a shower/bath. We use to go to hot springs in Japan that would cook a lobster. I usually just stayed in the room and enjoyed some hot sake.
  13. I'm assuming he was only inspecting a single condo unit. Oh, yea, boy do a feel dumb
  14. I've been in biz 5 years and have come nothing close to that size inspection. I'm happy if I get a 4 unit appartment once a year. What was youe fee for 80 units?
  15. Very Nice Kurt - are you going to invest in the formal training?
  16. Thread Drift: When I was 18 I joined the Air Force and found myself living in a dorm with a laundry room down the hall. Once after doing laundry I discovered I had left a gold chain in my pocket and it was gone. While searching the laundry room, I shook / tilted the dryer I had used and heard something. I removed the rear panel cover and found something like $20 in coins and my gold chain inside. That was a lot of money to me at the time and I felt I hit the jack pot. I then removed the covers from the other dryers, but found nothing. It was just that one dryer. So for the next 2 ½ years every month or two I would get the coins from that one dryer. Hey it was party money – but back then it was all party money.
  17. Looks like you found a stash of cocaine - did you try and sniff it? Tell your customers to get the word out to the local crack heads and removal will be free.
  18. Caoimhin you must really love your work, because no one who knows that much about environmental hazards does it just to make a living.
  19. I found this odd. I'm guessing the sparky did it so as to not accedentaly touch them? I was tempted to just pull if off, but did not. Would you have removed it? Click to Enlarge 72 KB
  20. This product was discussed here last year sometime - you can search for the thread. I think I said it would be great for peeping toms.

  25. The bottom of the sump has a lot of mud inside. The drain tile enters the sump from two sides. One side is clear the other is filled with mud. Hose built in 1994. No signs of any water intrusion problems. What does the mud mean and how did it get in there? Any ideas are appreciated especially since my customer is the city attorney?
