  1. Hot CO can pocket, build up, and find it's way into the building from pressure differentials. At least, that's how it was explained to me. There's also the *just plain ****ing stupid* violation. Stupid things are generally not allowed.
  2. Yep. Basically, don't fasten it on the ridges; fasten in the flats.
  3. Buddhist, Hindi.....I don't know. I recall something about the origin being claimed both ways. I'm willing to let either claim it. As far as the other part..... There was a period in early 20th century American social considerations where there were a lot of individuals advocating religions and ideas other than what we consider traditional (Christian). There were several folks completely involved in the idea of multiculturalism being the truest realization of our democratic mosh pit. The folks that put the money up for the Bahai temple in Wilmette, thought Bahahualla (sp?), with the emphasis on the convergence of all religions, was the most true religion for America. They built a temple that's right out of Islam in the middle of white anglo-wasp heaven. If one travels to Livingston, MT and visits the train station (built 1902), they'll see a marvel of classic architecture where one of the primary accent details is a Yin-Yang symbol adorning the capitals of the columns and cornice decoration. So, I don't think the swastika use on these buildings and boilers was just a token use of an interesting symbol. It was Americans exercising their beliefs that America was the place where cultures and religions could all come together. Maybe I got it wrong. Even if I'm wrong, I'm sticking with it.
  4. One more time..... The Buddhist swastika is oriented one way, the nazi swastika another. The Buddhist has the legs going "counter clockwise", and the nazi clockwise. Burnham boilers and the hotel were looking for peace, prosperity, and general goodness in the universe. Hitler took the form and turned it backwards, flipped it to a 45? angle, hence...... Hakenkreuz.
  5. Jim's right. Won't stick if it's not double primed. Is that metal aluminum or 26 gauge galvanized? If it's aluminum, it'll usually come loose even with primer; the aluminum moves around too much.
  6. The Burnham swastika was the Buddhist sign of prosperity. Or so I thought. The Nazi swastika was oriented differently.
  7. Makes sense. I did the turn off thing for a while too, but it just pissed people off. Circulators don't increase pressure; they're not a pump. Well, maybe they do, but only a teeny fraction of psi. How could they cause a water heater to fail? Also, we've found that insulating water lines is critically important when using a circulator. If they aren't insulated, you end up with what you described; a continuously firing water heater and a lot of expense.
  8. Yeah, kinda. 10+ years of people freaking out about mold tends to harden one up with a strong shell of cynicism. If there was strong science telling us that mold is a major health hazard, then it'd be different. As it is, most folks are still operating on popular news media blather. The guy may have a legitimate concern, but we can't tell. The only thing I can say for sure is the landlord is a dick.
  9. I think satisfaction with tankless has something to do with particular houses and distance to the water heater. I may be wrong. Do the folks that like them have the heater fairly close to a wet wall, or are baths and kitchen close to each other? Do the proponents have "stretched out" floor plans, or are things compact?
  10. One more time....talk to a doctor, not a mold inspector. Do you really want medical (or legal) advice from a home or mold inspector?
  11. Of course you found mold with the Home Depot test kit. There's mold spores everywhere. Regardless of where or what you test, you will find mold. It's a completely dipshit test; it provides no useful information. You are having a reaction to something. Talk to your doctor before freaking out about mold. Your landlord is an asshole. If you can go somewhere else, do so.
  12. They work fine, and one definitely doesn't run out of hot water. That's not my gripe. It's the tripled water bill and doubled gas bill from family members taking endless hot showers, and the aggravating cold water sandwich effect at the kitchen sink. I didn't anticipate paying triple the price for a water heater that increased my utility bills and made me wait for hot water at the kitchen sink. If there's not a circulating system, and one has a larger house with far flung baths and fixtures, one gets to wait inordinate amounts of time for that hot water. If folks dig 'em, fine with me. I just don't know anyone that has found them to save money or provide the *on demand* experience they advertise.
  13. I like to do the butter on semi crispy skins after I demolish the insides (accompanied by sour cream). Then I go for my angioplasty.
  14. The legislation will have the force of a baked potato exploding in a microwave. Is there no end to the humiliation associated with being a HI? I think I answered my own question.......
  15. I don't know all the design parameters and restrictions, but I'd be looking at water quality systems first, water heater type second. I am biased, though. I don't like tankless water heaters unless they're set up as point of service operation.
  16. Why would you want a tankless? Are you going to install a circulator system?
  17. Pull up the BSC study of how to finish indoor pools. I guarantee it isn't how this pool is done. After that, I don't know any pool guy that understands building science. They all recommend these cheesey little 500cfm fans for indoor pools, no matter how large the pool.
  18. Does the company even matter anymore? I think it's got more to do with product cycles and which vendors are actually manufacturing the stuff. I've got a pair of promotional binoculars from Restoration Hardware that are better than some of the Bushnell and Nikons I've owned. I've used Tasco's that are as nice as Nikons. I don't even know the mfg. of my monocular; complete generic and very nice. The only thing that seems for certain is when you get into the really expensive stuff; then, price usually buys quality. Waterproof is nice.
  19. Yes, same thing. Put a screwdriver tip on the circulator, put your ear on the screwdriver handle. You can hear it if it's running. If it's super hot and you can't hear anything, it's broken or air locked.
  20. I remember that. There was one in Williamston, wasn't there? A lot of the window guys tried to lateral into the burgeoning plastic vanity top/bathroom market. Working in pole barns with extreme VOC's.
  21. I have both, but I use a generic monocular more than my binoculars. It fits in my pocket and it's quicker and easier than a pair of binoculars.
  22. When would one use SEU on the load side of a service? I never see SEU, all pipe here.
  23. The 41st...Pennsylvania.....Insulator Show........and Sale. Not the 3rd or 17th. They've been doing this since 1973. I'm betting there's a lot of beards.
  24. I'm not sure.....still trying to catch my breath.
  25. We may have a record.....an 8 year old thread brought back to life.
