  1. Welcome Joe. I take the panelcover off if at all possible, but I've seen a few that were just flat out inaccessable. I don't operate breakers unless I feel it's imperative for some reason (safety concerns, etc.). I wouldn't consider pulling a fuse block unless a fire was starting from it. Brian G.
  2. Hmmm... I haven't heard anything back on any of mine yet, but maybe they didn't bother to call because I did warn 'em. Time will tell, but my hiney is covered. Brian G.
  3. There's a certain area here where I regularly find 90 - 110 lbs PSI on systems (nearby and downhill from the water associations' main plant). I advise the clients accordingly, but I have yet to find a leak in any of the houses out there (some now approaching 25 years old). I don't know why. Brian G.
  4. I tried to run a search on my older NEC program last night, but it hung my computer and kept me down until this morning. I'd like to help, but I'm not doing that again. [:-boggled[:-crazy][:-gnasher Brother Morrison is selling me a little short, I'm actually 6' 3". Brian G. Yes, They Can Pile It That High []
  5. Gerry, Has anything ever been decided about how the new exam & CMI designation would be structured? I know there was a long thread debating the subject at the NACHI board, but nothing was settled last I knew. Brian G.
  6. I'm surprised it's still there. I haven't heard a word about this exam from NACHI in months. Brian G.
  7. Stan, Which test did you take? The one at the link posted at the front of this thread or the one at the NACHI website? Brian G.
  8. Scott, look at pages 3.19 - 3.21, they cover most of what you need. Brian G.
  9. Off the top of my head I would say that this is still a subpanel that would qualify for the "separate building" exception. If there's a panel set out there I couldn't think of it as a branch circuit in the usual sense. The capacity would be limited by the smallest component, between the feed, main, and panel rating. If the wire has the least rating, that's the limit for the panel until someone changes it. I would write it up as such too (70 amp, 120 / 240 volt) and warn the client about it. Someone smarter than I may know better, so wait for more opinions. Brian G.
  10. What a great way to get even with that no-good neighbor that will never bring your shovel back. Just quietly wander over after dark every night..... [] Brian G. And Have a Few Cold Ones First [:-snorkel
  11. Wow, very strange. Never seen anything like that before. Capt'n's guess ain't bad, but who the heck knows? Brian G.
  12. Hey Cornhusker, where the heck you been? I've heard of hoses bursting and releasing a lot of water, but never seen it myself. I'd say that falls into "possible but not likely" territory on the list of potential disasters. Brian G.
  13. Originally posted by Bruce Thomas Doesn't the ground have to be equal to one of the legs? No, it's just an equipment ground. If that were the case there would be no such thing as "something / 2 with ground NM cable", it'd all be "something 3 plain". It isn't intended to carry any current. Brian G.
  14. Originally posted by hausdok I responded, "Yep," meaning I didn't see an issue. Ah-so, gotcha. That has to be record for you Mike. Only one word, containing only 3 letters. And they said it could never happen... [] Brian G.
  15. Uh Mike, "Yep" to what? Other than the white hot leg I can't see any issue there. The grounds are bonded to the enclosure just like they are on any disconnect or piece of equipment. There is no neutral on 220v. They pulled a 3w / with ground on one side and capped the unused leg. I see nothing wrong there. Is I blind? [8D] Brian G.
  16. New Jersey....gurgling in a basement...hmmm. Could it be Jimmy Hoffa, still hanging on? [:-taped] Brian G. Whattayou talkin'? [:-dog]
  17. I'm spoiled and very blessed down here. I have yet to see one single example of venting two appliances into one pipe, or even one appliance into a chimney. They all go up and out through the roof, solo, every time. God help me if I ever run into something really complicated. Kick 'em in the shins Randy! Brian G.
  18. Originally posted by Jim Morrison FWIW, I'd never buy or use a ladder I didn't trust 100%. Where's your sense of adventure Jimmy? Just think of it as sort of like dating...no guarantees, but if you get lucky it might be a beautiful thing. Inspecting roofs, chimneys, and attics just isn't worth a fall. Like autombobile tires and brakes, it's one of those items that isn't worth trying to save money on. Hah! Spoken like a high-dollar Boston inspector. When you're po (can't afford the other 2 letters), there's nothing generic you won't at least consider. "Gee Doc, doesn't Wal Mart or somebody have a Chinese knock-off of that heart valve I need?" Seriously though, I bought an X&C months ago. I haven't had any problems with it other than a few educational hand pinches, but I only use it here and there. I actually don't trust it 100% yet, but we have a lot of old houses around here with scuttle hole accesses in narrow closets. Nothing else works worth a damn for those. Brian G. 19. Originally posted by Scottpat For photos like that when you are shooting up and the sky is in the background try using "fill flash" or force the flash if your camera has it. This gets rid of the shadows. Yep, mine has a flash you can activate for any shot, regardless of lighting. It really helps in shadowy situations where the camera doesn't sense the need for more light. Brian G.

    GE Date?

If I were the Code King I'd make 'em stamp the damned date right into the metal tag, along with the BTU's. No plastic labels either, stamp it in metal. What possible purpose does it serve to encode that info where it's hard to figure out? Brian G.
  21. Originally posted by hausdok A home inspector fixated on plumber's cracks. Okay Scott, I hope you pack a side arm and sleep lying on your back. How the hell did plumbers get into this? Scott's not my type anyway...too butch. [:-viking] Brian G.
