  1. There's no need for a "paper" filter. There's a pair of screens called prefilters preceding the pair of cells of the air cleaner. The air cleaner should be energized when the blower starts. Timer be stupid.
  2. Yes it does. Read #5 in the text you quoted. Exception # 3 applies to #5.
  3. That was answered in post #7 above.
  4. What you underlined are the exceptions to the prohibition of having a return air opening in a room with a fuel-burning appliance when the room contains the sole source of return air. In other words, you can not place a return air vent within 10' of a solid fuel burning appliance if the room has the only source of return air. IRC, chapter 16 somewhere. I have no idea what code applies to your village in BC.

  6. Mitsubishi HQ in Japan has nothing to do with your heat pump. Contact Mitsubishi Electric and ask for customer service. I think they're based in California I've contacted them a couple times with technical questions. I've checked hundreds of residential and commercial Mitsubishi heat pumps and never found anything close to the problem you describe. It's likely a combination of installation errors.
  7. They have a relatively small group of CP numbers missing. I've called their toll free number when I get one not listed. If you see a lot of W/M boilers, you eventually get pretty good at guessing their age. You can also find dates on a couple boiler components.
  8. It should be a CP number that you can look up here: http://www.weil-mclain.com/en/weil-mcla ... cp-lookup/
  9. I don't know there's a name for it. A great book I once owned (can't find it) - Plaster, Render, Paint and Coatings - translated from German. There might be a roof hatch, dormer or skylight on the rear span that he popped his head from to take the pic.
  10. Most vermiculite is graded into fine, medium or coarse. Medium and coarse are usually seen for thermal insulation. Fine is usually used as an additive for concrete and potting soil. It's not common, but the fine grade has been used for thermal insulation. Vermiculite and Asbestos
  11. The model # for the outdoor unit is not on the chart that lists compatibility with the 2.5 ton indoor unit. I have never seen any manufacturer list an indoor unit at a smaller capacity than the outdoor unit. You also need to have manufacturer listed compatible indoor and outdoor units to show that the system meets the minimum SEER rating. The indoor unit being a half ton larger than outdoors is often acceptable. I'm told that arrangement might be slightly better at dehumidifying the air. Did the guy from Trane show a company ID, or is it the contractors buddy?
  12. I found Celotex (fiberboard made from bagasse - the waste pulp from sugercane processing) used for backing of the plaster walls in a large home built in 1922. Here's a picture of a label, but this is from a later building. Click to Enlarge 37.71 KB
  13. I've uploaded the MIA Residential Stone Countertop Installation Guidelines to the file library. I've used this as a defensible standard. https://inspectorsjournal.com/forum/Lin ... +%26+baths The spacing of the brackets in the OP installation need to be no more than 36" apart. Cabinet guy needs to install 2 more brackets.
  14. The air handler is 2.5 ton, variable speed, manufactured by American Standard. What's the model # of the outdoor unit? I have a chart of what's compatible. Smaller capacity indoor unit is not listed as an option.
  15. When I see something that doesn't look right, I review the stone countertop installation specs from MIA - Marble Institute. I can check when I get back. I think if the cantilever is more than 10", brackets are needed. Since the stone should be supported every 3', then that's the maximum spacing of the brackets.
  16. It's quite difficult for me to appreciate it when I'm so fixated on the slope of the boiler's vent connector. I don't see how Lamb can see art in the crap we look at.

  18. I learned many, many years ago to NOT go on the last day. I much prefer the opening weekend or the weekdays. I had to miss it this year.

  21. It's either Cast Design or Castle Design. They're in Alabama and produce hundreds of plaster mouldings. Expert mouldmaker Thayer Smith of Downingtown, PA creates very accurate moulds for reproducing any plaster ornamentation.
  22. If someone needs to carry a flashlight that big, I'm pretty sure they're compensating for something.
  23. The vacant, 200 year old farmhouse on Friday ran out of oil probably sometime last week. No pipes burst, but 6 radiators blew out and the boiler's auto feed made sure that water continually poured out of them. Moisture condensed on about every surface and it was raining indoors. Lotsa black plaster on the exterior walls. Click to Enlarge 54.97 KB
  24. Nothing special. It's just the moderators discussing how to fix problems or tasks that might make things better here. I think they might be voting me off the island.
