  1. A moldy home may not be the root of your ills an ABC Action News report 10/25/04 TAMPA - A 1999 Mayo Clinic study connected nearly all of the chronic sinus infections afflicting 37 million Americans to mold. However, an allergy expert at USF disagrees. Dr. Richard Lockey says that research shows most of us have mold in our homes and it would take more than that to make a person seriously ill. "Most people who enter a room and it's mold infested they see the black and it leaves a message with them, saying that this room is contaminated and it truly is," Lockey said. However, Lockey, who has studied mold for 20 years, believes that mold is not really as toxic as the public fears "In order for that mold to really cause problems you have to eat it in huge quantities," explained Lockey. "For example, we know animals have died from eating mold infested hay but they have to eat a lot of it. When these mold spores and old particles get into the air they don't cause any serious medical problems. If they did, we'd all be suffering on an ongoing regular basis." Dr. Lockey sees about five people a month complaining of mold allergies and there is a test he can do to determine if that is true. Most people he said are rarely allergic to only mold. "Compared to things like dust mites, compared to things like cockroaches, compared to things like cats and dogs -- they are far down the line as far as allergens causing disease," concluded Lockey. Dr Lockey believes the idea that mold in your home is causing some epidemic of disease is absolutely unproven and unscientific. His opinion is based on years of treating patients as well as research done at USF and papers written by other members of the scientific community.
  2. Are you sure about the plug? Why would it be 120/240V? The plug and receptacle are required to be a locking type. (Curved blades and slots) to prevent someone from putting something else into it. It should not be connected to a ground rod, but it probably wouldn't hurt if it was (assuming the equipment grounding conductor is connected to the pump.) A pool pump required bonding to the metal in the shell of the pool and other metal in and around the pool area. Are you sure this was not a bonding wire?
  3. I agree, it should be meaningful. I just don't have a lot of faith in the process. My lack of faith is based on experience. For example, has licensing of (fill in a profession here) in your state put the bums and crooks out of business? I didn't think so. Now I'm sure that SOME of them have been eliminated, and that's a good thing, but at what cost to honest guys like you?
  4. Welcome to the wonderful world of licensing. This can all be explained with one sentence. Politicians don't put voters out of business. This is only the beginning. Wait until **** gets in there and starts trying to watering it all down so that anyone can be a state approved licensed home inspector.
  5. CO has a density of .97 compared to air. In other words it's only slightly heavier. It mixes in with the air rather evenly due to convection and air movement. Also, the CO is not produced by itself, it's mixed with Nitrogen and Water vapor, which dilute it even further. Doesn't matter where you put the detector, it will see the CO.
  6. It's algea. Harmless, and it does grow in the sun. It's more prevelant since the formulation of the minerals in the shingles was changed by adding more phosphate. Algea likes that. Some manufacturers are adding copper particles to the granules to prevent algea. Ownens Corning AR shingles are Algea Resistant.
  7. Not bad for an old guy!
  8. The deck has settled and broken at the outside edge of the beam at the top of the shell of the pool. The marcite is shot. The staining is pitting of the surface. It needs resurfacing. The suction inlets are too close together. If you don't have 3' of room, you put them on 2 different planes. They need anti-vortex covers and suction relief devices.
  9. Yes, wall space is defined as "unbroken along the floor line by doorways,......You need a receptacle there. You wouldn't put a cord across the doorway opening would you?
  10. Sounds like it set up to run the strips all the time, which kind of negates much of the advantage of using a heat pump.
  11. 1. Find the Yellow Pages 2. Look up Appliance repairs 3.Call a guy to come over and tell you it will cost $150.00 to fix it. 4. Find the Yellow Pages again. (This should be easy.) 5. Look up Appliance Sales 6. I think you can figure out the rest.
  12. I hope Volkswagons are selling well. . . .
  13. Messenger service is used by network administrators to send messages to client computers on the network. If you have this turned on, spammers can span for open ports on your computer and send you a message faked to appear like they came from anywhere, like your network administrator. You should turn this service off. Instructions are below. This is different from MSN Messenger, for which you see the icon on your toolbar. That's for chatting and other stuff, and is perfectly safe. You should also go to www.grc.com and run all of the security scans available there. You can trust all of the info there. Windows XP Home Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel Click Performance and Maintenance Click Administrative Tools Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the STOP button. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OK Windows XP Professional Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel Click Administrative Tools Click Services Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the STOP button. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar Click OK
  14. I saw one just like that a couple months ago. Literally raining in the crawl space! Black mold everywhere. Vents were closed.
  15. Doober, you need a lawyer's forum, not a home inspector's forum. Maybe John Edwards can help.
  16. Those have integral backflow preventers.
  17. Grounding of the service has nothing to do with grounding of receptacles. The receptacles are "grounded" by connecting them to the grounded conductor at the service. They will be "grounded" even if a ground rod or water line is not connected to the service. Don't worry, it only takes about 10 years to understand these concepts.
  18. That's easy. Define the term you use to descrive things as OK in your pre-inspection agreement. Then it doesn't matter what the words are, you and the client have agreed upon their meaning.
  19. Obviously, math is not among your strong points. Actually math isn't my strong point, but I just didn't do the math here at all before posting, which is why I missed this. I struggled to get the A's in Calculus 1,2,& 3 and the A's in statistics, thermodynamics, etc. I got my undergrad in engineering with nearly a 3.8 GPA. No, I am not the smartest math guy out there, but with an IQ of 130, I survive the math ok. But...thanks for being so kind to point out my error! No offense intended, it just made me laugh.
  20. Obviously, math is not among your strong points.
  21. You guys need to actually read your Code books. The 3-2-10 rule is for solid fuel chimneys, not gas B vents. B vent can be as low as 1' above the roof, depending on slope. Clearance from a vertical wall is 8' or 2' above.
  22. Yes, real estate agents did put us on the map. If it wasn't for the proliferation of disclosure laws and the liability that got heaped upon the real estate community, we would not exist to the extent we do today. I agree that we can influence the consumer, albeit very slowly. It's a 20 year process. Marketing today has to be targeted primarily to the people who influence buyers the most - the agents. Also realize it's not an either or thing. There are agents who want good inspectors. If there weren't, I'd never get an agent referral. I still get 40-50% of my business from agents, without any marketing to them. Should we ignore that group and market only to consumers? ASHI branding is aimed at all segments of the marketplace, as it should be.
  23. It's no shift at all. If you guys could get past your paranoia and think logically, you would realize that in the context of ASHI branding, the real estate community is nothing more than a vehicle to reach consumers, who have always been ASHI member's primary concern. Nothing has changed. No shift. No drift. Why not advertise to consumers directly you say? (Obviously I've had this conversation before.) Some of the marketing is targeted directly to consumers, and Chapters, who are an important part of the process can direct the marketing where they wish. But it would be foolish to ignore the fact that 70% of home inspections originate from a referral from an agent. That's where 70% of the marketing should be targeted. Otherwise you are throwing away your money.
  24. No
  25. Only if you want the water to drain out.
