Danny Pritchard
Is anyone familiar with using lead caps on the heads of nails in a metal roof?Part of this roof was recently replaced and the roofer used these lead caps over the heads of the nails. The older section of roof has the conventional nails with a washer. kurt
Familiar as in I've installed them. Vastly inferior to neoprene gasketed screws. The lead is supposed to squash out when you cinch the nail to the steel, but they usually squish out and/or come off. I'd recommend a dab of SolarSeal caulk, or equal, to every nail head. Brian G
Lord, I haven't seen lead-head nails since I was a kid. I didn't dream anyone still made 'em. Every barn, shed, and other outbuilding with a tin roof used to have those, but as Kurt suggests they're rather hit-or-miss on sealing. I would also recommend caulking all of them. Brian G. Danny Pritchard
Thanks for the info.I have never seen these before. They definitely don't look to be as good as the gasketed model.
