Robert Jones Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 This is a home built in 1928, obviously the panel has since been replaced. The service panel is not Federal Pacific Electric, but Federal. Do these have the same issues? Would you call it? Click to Enlarge 30.58 KB Click to Enlarge 38.25 KB
Richard Moore Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 Actually it's a "Federal Electric" panel. See http://www.inspect-ny.com/fpe/FPE_Panel_ID12.htm From there... Here is the interior of a Federal Electric panel, Federal Electric Catalog No. 116, showing that this early model electrical panel used a copper bus (nice). However the circuit breakers and bus design are early versions of the problematic FPE Stab-Lok design and should be handled as with any other FPE Stab-Lok equipment - replace the panel. (my bold) Seems you have a version of the Stab-Lok design made before they...ummm, ummm..."perfected" it.
Tom Raymond Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 So if I understand this right, Federal Electric panels are ok as long as they are not Stab-Lok style breakers? I see a few Federal Electric panels, but mostly fuses or fused disconnects. I haven't yet seen an FPE. Tom
Robert Jones Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 Thanks Richard. I was thrown off a bit that the breakers were not Stab-Lok. Basically, anything Federal to do with a service panel, replace.
Richard Moore Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 So if I understand this right, Federal Electric panels are ok as long as they are not Stab-Lok style breakers? I can't speak of the OK-edness of other Federal Electric panels but generally, yes, that would be my take on it.
Les Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 Rob, can't say that I agree. There are many styles and configurations of Federal Pacific products. Read about the history of company. Anything Stab-lok is not good.
