  1. Umm... just a question, is it actually cemented in the floor or is it loose? It kind of looks like the back of the housing for an old exterior light we had back on the farm.
  2. Had the furnace ever been cleaned? I hate to admit it but early on when I was just a labourer in construction, after eating lunch leaning against a wall we would crumple up our lunch bags and stuff them down the ducting. (They were right there, so handy) I'm sure we weren't the only ones. [:-paperba
  3. Thanks guys, When I googled pill bug, roly poly, isopod, some of the same images are in each search. Everyone's right! Isopod sounds more official.
  4. This is not for an inspection, this is at a friends home. They are coming out of the settlement cracks in his garage floor this fall. Any idea what they are? Apparently most active in the evening not during daylight hours. Sorry about quality of pic, was just taken with phone. Click to Enlarge 71.95 KB
  5. Thanks guys. I knew from previous threads that asbestos tiles came in 12X12, I was just hoping someone would recognize this tile and give me a positive ID. Thanks Jim I suspected that was what the arrows were for, but I thought with the fletching missing on part of the arrow that would help with IDing, as there was no other markings on the bottom of loose tiles.
  6. The 3rd pic shows 1 tile flipped over to show that odd arrow emblem.
  7. Hopefully someone recognizes this tile, it's 12X12, quite stiff, seems very much like the 9X9 asbestos but I'm not sure. It's poorly glued down to a concrete floor of a house built in '71 Click to Enlarge 1637.51 KB Click to Enlarge 1538.35 KB Click to Enlarge 1048.16 KB
  8. Some people should not be allowed to buy lumber! Or hammers!
  9. First we had Kurt talking booby traps, then Mark mentioning the bra-less lady from Brazil, and Jim going on about way-top-heavy...I was wondering where this thread was going!? Ha!
  10. Thanks guys for the quick responses, Marc- yes electric range/oven, tight building envelope, HRV on the furnace, built in 2012. Furnace fan automatically comes on when bathroom fan is turned on, etc.
  11. Hi guys, today I had a GE exhaust fan over the range. It had recirculating fan with carbon filter in place (dirty). But it also vented to exterior, no louvers to block the exhaust to interior. Other than the gummed up dirty filter this should be a non-issue, correct? Leighton
  12. Just a thought... If I have high levels of radon in my home, can I go ahead and remove the asbestos tiles in the basement myself? (Insert chuckle here)
  13. Here I was expecting a picture of a chicken and an egg.
  14. I've seen some with flashing, coming from behind stucco on vertical face and going over the horizontal detail, (can't find a pic right now) that must help some? I know I can't see it but shouldn't house wrap be on top of flashing behind EIFS?
  15. Hey, speak for yourself. We still occasionally use car decking subfloors here. Must be where the wood goes when it is shipped from here.... Send it here. Marc Years ago when I worked at a lumber yard they had your typical lumber grades #1,#2,#3, they had one grade better than #1, no knots at all,This was called "J" grade, this dimensional lumber got loaded into sea cans and went to Japan.
  16. Here you go Kurt, thinking you might like this "repair". Click to Enlarge 1206.73 KB
  17. Just called a buddy who has a tin bashing business, they do call it a cross break. It is meant to drain rain with the added benefit of stiffening the metal. The degree of angle doesn't change the name.
  18. Yes, division of the government where I had to apply for licensing after I was member of ass. Leighton
  19. Well, checked with business services Alberta, license # must be shown on clients report not required on website. Leighton
  20. Thanks, I guess I'll check with small business Alberta to see if I have to post it. Leighton
  21. Is there any argument for putting your # on your website? I notice some HI's post their #, some don't. I ask because there is an HI in my assn. who is going to court over a subpar inspection he didn't do, they think someone is using his # from his website and getting paid to do inspections without being licensed. Unless someone complains, who knows how many he has done. Leighton
  22. Found this on Friday. Doesn't everyone know that if you need some extra storage in an attached garage just pull down some drywall off the ceiling and shove the kids sled up there. Click to Enlarge 1102.13 KB
  23. Here in Calgary I've only built footings with forms ( 2x6) for the sides, is that common to trench and use the dirt as the form for the cement? Or are they just not completed?
  24. Overkill or good practice?
  25. Anyone seen flashings like this? House built in '13 they are over all windows, doorways etc. Click to Enlarge 33.6 KB
