  1. Those seem like big holes to me. If the holes are clogged, the gravel won't get in the pit. If the holes are clear, you're predicting some very dramatic erosion. Seems like a stretch. If the holes are low, it'll take in more water - that should be good for the floor. I think sump pumps are made to run continously for some time. The cold water is all around it and running through it. That should keep it cool, yes? That said, I'm not sure how the height of the holes, relative to the float, will have a significant effect here. When I see something out of my comfort zone I usually start thinking of sky-is-falling worst-case scenarios. Take a step back. If you're confident what you're seeing is a problem, pursue it or do more research.
  2. I've never played with this light, but I have a lot of experience with other Streamlight products. Unbelievable durability.
  3. It's a very interesting job opportunity. Sure, it might need patching, but with what? And, by whom? If anybody touches this thing that isn't an expert, they'll likely do more harm than good.
  4. Maybe too late by now... I'd be concerned about lateral support and proper load bearing.
  5. Kurt's on track. If I had a paragraph like that for every small problem I found, two things would happen: 1. My reports would be about 60 pages long, 2. My clients wouldn't read the reports and, therefore, wouldn't benefit at all from my service. Brevity good.

    Watts TPR

Can anyone tell me about the quality of the Watts fusible plug TPR valve? Does it have a good service record?

  8. Did you ever find out why those guys lit your dad's TV on fire?
  9. As a fireman, I've done both. I've even seen a closed window used as an exit once.
  10. Put the #%@ing dog in the basket!
  11. Thanks, everybody. Have a great weekend.
  12. An individual counter space larger wider than 12" in a kitchen requires a receptacle. Does the same apply for a bathroom?
  13. I get requests for proposals from home owners associations looking for various services. My proposal includes, among other things, an expiration date. For those of you that do this kind of work, what time period do you allow for the customer to accept the proposal?
  14. The paper filler is avoiding the soil? I'm still not following.
  15. What is a soils engineer going to do with that?
  16. Spoken like a Home Inspector Poet.
  17. Thanks, Bill. I thought it was you.
  18. A couple years ago some one posted a similar photo, and it was for an older electrical receptacle. Some one else even posted photos of a light fixture or a toaster(?) to go with that type of receptacle. It's a different kind of cover plate, I know. I bring it up because I want to see those photos again! Anyone?
  19. That doesn't mean it's not worth saying. Mike, I agree with what you're saying about the advantage of the less-permeable topcoat. As Kurt assumed, there are plenty of stucco details at this house that are no good. I'm meeting with the client and a builder's rep at the house on Saturday.
  20. Yesterday I did a big-money townhouse in a new Oak Brook subdivision with (I thought) EIFS, with a bunch of bad details. Today the client, who felt betrayed by the developer, called me to let me know about her conversation with the builder. He described to her a complete stucco system with a "Dryvit paint on top." I asked her, if she was still interested in the house, to get full documentation on the system in place, and I'd help her look it over. Have any of you heard of this type of installation? Good? Bad? Indifferent? More info?
  21. There isn't?
  22. Melina I don't think the comment was directed at you. Most of us would agree with much of what you wrote. Long live the deal killer.
  23. I agree with Joe. The later(latter/ladder?) questions were less challenging. In other words, the ones in the second(secant?) half(have?) were easier(easeler/less difficultish?). Cool quiz. 43/50. Every day I find a way to feel more stupider.
  24. Because the new mortar doesn't match the old, it's easy to pick them out. Even with a decent match, you can generally spot them if you're paying attention. Or, they repoint the whole building. Unfortunately, around here that usually means some "mason"(part-time dog-walker and roller-rink cashier) smeared mortar over the old joints.
  25. Check the websites of other home inspectors, especially the folks on this board - many have a link to an agreement. Mine is at http://bedrockhomeinspections.com/docs/ ... eement.pdf After reading a few dozen agreements, I wrote my own and had it blessed by my attorney. Works for me, but everyone's different. Good luck.
