  1. I used a set of ice climbing axes once, neighbours were pretty impressed.[] -Brad
  2. I have never been more proud to be a Home Inspector in Ontario.... -Brad
  3. Is there a letter before the 4 digits of the serial? Olsen used A-1234 type of format for serial numbers from '59-'79. Olsen's phone # is 519.627.0791 -Brad
  4. Again - thanks Mike! -Brad
  5. I found this old gem in my own house today (my house was built in '26). It was inside a wall, and energized. The interesting things you find when bashing walls down. Now I have another item to add to my box of old knobs, tubes and other things a house nerd would want to keep. Image Insert: 26.54 KB -Brad
  6. .....anytime I have a question I call you and you look it up. -Brad
  7. Good to know [] -Brad (Canada's Ambassador to TIJ)
  8. I'm a knucklehead - I have that chart on the wall by my desk! I got up, walked across the room, and dug through the filing cabinet rather than swivel my head a bit. [:-censore -Brad
  9. my notes say that as of 2005, Amana (owned by Maytag) stopped using the BLACKHORSE code. Last time I had one, I got in touch with customer service - 1.866.629.8241 or customerservice@maytagair.com -Brad
  10. I generally just turn the hot water on full blast and stick my hand under it until it is too hot to keep it there. I guess I can say this is to test the heater - although it is just instinct after shaking the listing agent's hand (less obvious than washing with bleach). -Brad
  11. Walter, I've always called it a continuous return. That doesn't necessarily make it correct, however. -B
  12. I would guess Sept '02 for the heat pump. Some time in '75 for the furnace. -Brad
  13. I call it a continuous return. Other times I call it the little roof like thing above the windows. -Brad
  14. Archaeopteryx?
  15. The Canadian Standards Association has a recall lookup feature. www.csa-international.org -Brad
  16. Nope - Willy Loman, as in huffing flue gases in an attempt to speed up the inevitable . -Brad
  17. Today's inspection had an old gravity furnace - something which I almost never see. I know somebody'll probably tear me a new one for not knowing, but what the heck is that box on the vent? At first I assumed it was some sort of barometric damper, but when I looked inside it seemed more like some sort of Willy Loman-esque contraption designed to spill flue gases into the home. Alright, lemme have it..... -Brad (gravity furnaces - one more thing I missed out on being born in the 70s) Image Insert: 45.28 KB Image Insert: 59.64 KB
  18. I have done hundreds of insurance inspections - haven't heard once of there being a problem with asbestos cement siding. -Brad
  19. While I know my Connell is being facetious, I think I'll go get a jug of Bushmills just to be safe. [] -Brad
  20. "It rubs the lotion on its skin... it does this every time its told to or it gets the hose......"
  21. Have you tried the Nat'l Climatic Data Centre? They were a help to me doing some research during university (though that was quite a while ago). http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ncdc.html I'm feeling good - scars are healing nicely.... as nicely as scars can heal. -Brad
  22. The local weather office will have temperature records, if you know the date of installation. On my side of the border, these things are handled by Environment Canada. The weather offices are usually located at airports, with remote monitoring stations scatted throughout the area. Weather authorities, in my experience, keep really good records. Aside from that I'm afraid I'm not much help. -Brad
  23. I use a Canon Powershot A720 IS. It was well under $200, has decent zoom, I haven't broken it yet, and takes a common SD card. It does run on AA batteries - for me that was a must. It does go through the batteries pretty quick (use rechargeables) but if I forget to charge them up I can buy batteries at any gas station or corner store. -Brad
  24. Try this, it may help: http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/ -Brad
  25. I recently read a book called Reluctant Genius, it is the story of Alexander Bell's life. It details the relationship (rivalry) between Bell and Edison. Apparently Edison was driven largely by ego and aspirations of celebrity, whereas Bell despised being in the public eye. -Brad
