  1. I'm with Marc on not listening to the sales pitch of vender's - they want to sell product, not point out its shortcomings. I'm not a fan of ductboard either. It's a dirt magnet as well as all the other problems mention here.
  2. And this is my 1,000th post. [:-party] Marc Congrats Marc - 1000 posts in so short of time. You officially have no life. []
  3. I'm going to hate myself in the morning but... I believe that Radon is a problem (I'm really going to hate myself - are you trolling Kurt???) and, as a service of my company, we offer Radon testing. We also test for other safety/health hazards. I believe that by doing a proper home inspection I have, at least, raised the level of awareness to the consumer. There is enough credible studies done to link Radon to lung cancer. One realtor use to say "Radon wasn't around when I was young" to which I would reply "neither were seatbelts or smoke detectors".
  4. Thankfully I don't do many crawlspaces - mostly basement where I can stand up and have a look-see. I don't have to crawl around in crap. Pretty cool gaget Mike.
  5. Good for you on quiting smoking Les. I was at 3 packs of Camels a day for more years then I care to remember. That and coffee by the gallon. I started smoking in the 4th grade. It's really hard to quit, one of the hardest things I've done as I'm sure with you. Sometimes I miss it but I know if I smoke only one I'll be back to 3 packs a day in no time. It's really bad health wise but I can't believe the price of them now. I quit in 91 when the price was about a buck a pack - I'm a cheap-o.
  6. There is also MajorGeeks. If you don't mind rolling your own, with help from some really sharp folks , this is the place to go. There is a lot of freeware that will help cleanse your 'puter. I have to ask, what kind of web sites you hanging around Mike? []
  7. Alright smart guy - I get the message. [:-paperba
  8. [:-thumbu] You're in the waters with some really smart sharks - you're doing fine.
  9. Hm. OK, you win. I haven't seen aluminum siding stripped off a home yet. That's a new one. My son, who is an auto tech, has been seeing trucks with the catalytic converters cut out. Seems the scum bags can get under the truck with a sawzall and pop out the converter in no time. They then take it to the scrap yard. We have had man-hole covers stolen for scrap value too. Sorry, doing one of these repos brings out the best in me.
  10. It's really bad in parts here Mike. You see homes that have all the aluminum siding stripped off - but only as high as they can reach without a ladder. Copper is another big favorite. Sometimes you think pigs have more self respect. Ya, I'm venting.
  11. Is that grammatically correct? If something is missing, can you replace "it"? I know what you mean and it's understandable, but is it accurate to replace something that isn't there? Yes, I'm being a wiener, sort of......... Sure. Some a$$hole stole my car and now it has gone missing. I shall need to replace it.
  12. Amen! I believe we fail to give people some credit for common sense. Tongue in cheek. It was more about the fact that someone would actually take a built-in dishwasher than the fact that the dishwasher was missing. The customer knows that the dishwasher is missing and they need to install a new one. Nevermind... nothing that a good shower won't cleanse.
  13. You sound like a pig headed Irishman []
  14. It's OK to vent - I just had a little spill over in the plumbing forum. When a psychiatrist, who has had enough, wants to vent who do they talk to that will understand? It's all good.
  15. From todays inspection: The last owner of the unit removed the built-in dishwasher and took it with them as the home was being repossessed. Call a contractor to install a new dishwasher as needed. Simple enough and to the point? A home built in 2005 and people, with more money than brains, have managed to make a mess of it. Too bad you can't shoot houses - some of them would thank you.
  16. Hey Mike: Are you venting or looking for some help? While I'll fix small things that take less time to fix than report I wouldn't put that kind of time in for someone that isn't family or friend.
  17. Curious....what did you feed him? Marc Gerbils and store bought mice. Mikes recollection is dead on - pardon the expression. I had forgotten that detail but they always seem to start at the head end first. Curious. I have always considered snakes just trying to make a living like the rest of us. They don't want confrontation anymore than you do and will do their best to back away from a tenuous situation. However if push comes to shove they will react like any of us.
  18. Back when I was a kid, and was a gas jockey, my boss, who owned a Texaco station, had a 6' (or so) Boa Constrictor that he kept in a glass aquarium in the front of the shop. I use to put him around my neck and walk outside to pump gas. The customers use to dig it. That was 1971 or 1972. Their not much to write home about, they sleep, eat and crap. It's a little weird though to watch them unhinge their jaw and swallow a rodent whole. You can watch the "food" progress down the pipe.
  19. Thanks Jim. I take it then that any water that makes it past the tile/grout finds its way to the drainage plane and then out? Where does it exit? Any pics of an architectural drawing showing a correct drainage plane?
  20. I'd like to read the results of this study - any links I can follow or an address for snail mail?
  21. A perfect setup for electrolysis no? Just add water to speed up the process.
  22. Interesting read - something I need more work at. Does anyone have a detail of a drainage plane as it might relate to this application?
  23. Lovely... You are todays recipient of the prestigious Phillip Award John.
  24. I'm sorry Mike but I just can't justify spending the extra cash. Rather put it towards IR (or my next vacation). I'm with Joe - I get a lot more out of TIJ, on a daily basis, than I can anywhere else. Too bad our participation doesn't go to CE.
  25. I was set to go until their flyer came in the mail. 3 nights for the hotel, course registration, meals vs. 185.00. I can't justify the extra $$. So far the courses are meh but it'll get me the 20 plus save a bunch of green. I like saving money. I'm a big fan of Discorvery, the History channel & PBS. If it weren't for these I would have very little use for TV. I have no stomach for "reality TV" [:-yuck] Ozzy Osborne & Black Sabbath were pretty cool in 1972 but a TV show?? What rubbish.
