  1. Brandon: Thanks!
  2. Is that floor joist notched at the sill plate? The plate does not look like PT lumber.
  3. The only thing I might add is to make sure that when you cast the new footing in under the foundation you should vibrate the concrete to eliminate any voids at the foundation to footing cold joint. You could easily have air pockets that will have waterproofing as well as structural repercussions. Ramon
  4. Kurt, Well I would not call it the Southern Cal method. If you want Ideal then use NRCA details. My repair offers ease of install with off the shelf components that offer redundancy at each of the vulnerable spots. It will also outlive the rest of the roof from what I see in the picture. I just designed a solution that would slide over the PVC elbows. I do not believe most lead jackets I have seen have enough wiggle room to make the curve. (I do not suggest having a roofer cutting the intake and exhaust vent for your mechanical system.) Stripping the flashing in gives a redundant mastic level at the flange, and the shape of the jack keeps the mastic away from the PVC. #8195; Alternate: Download Attachment: Flashing.pdf 68.78 KB
  5. Strip in a regular roof jack similarly to the detail Mark and Bill supplied, use sealant from the jack to the pipe, then install a neoprene collar to protect the sealant. Do not use mastic in contact with the PVC pipe. Click to Enlarge 3.24 KB

  7. All window glass is concave since it is annealed, and is affected by the Earths gravity during the process. The glass is further distorted by the location of the low E film (if it is on face 2 or 3 of the IGU). Will the sealed double panes flex in and out as they change temperatures, thus moving through cycles of more and less deformation? Yes
  8. Scott, My concern on this technique is twofold: 1 - If water ever gets into the area the gypsum compound will erode, or if it is under load it will compress due to the moisture 2 - I have a 5 gallon bucket of Compound in my garage that I left to dry out about 2 months ago, here is a picture of it. 9. They had a booth at the international builders show last January. The mock ups they had were impressive and the system is sound. I have specified it on two buildings this year. The system has not generated alot of RFI's. I believe for residential it is a good system. For commercial buildings it holds it's own, but there are other systems that work as well or better.
  10. As well as Jim K.

  12. You might notice the article mentions 4 fires on shake roofs attributed to the issue.
  13. Interesting article about solar energy reflectance from windows. http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/blo ... nyl-siding

  16. Just so you know in Los Angeles, USC refers to University of Spoiled Children. I have met a few graduates.
  17. Out of curriosity how did you write it up, and what were your sugestions?
  18. So you do you think the pipe in photo 2 dispurses water directly into the soil by the deck? If so I would not consider it a gray water system.
  19. Only PEX that I am aware of. It would seem that the problem could be on any bright brass fitting. I can look into it further and get you a little bit more information on the subject if you would like.
  20. The issue that I know of is the bright brass fittings manufactured in… (wait for it)… China. They seem to collect hard water deposits that restrict the flow of water. Be aware in the second picture I have my Fenix TK-11 shining through the fitting pointed directly at the camera lens. That will give you an idea of how much corrosion is in the fitting. 21. I don't see how any wholesaler or vender of chinese drywall would willingly acknowledge to anyone other than perhaps their own attorney that they actually sold chinese drywall. Unless they're couillon. Marc I agree, just calling someone that just randomly answers a phone is not the most scientific way of figuring out if a particular house has tainted GWB. Even if they did ship bad GWB, they would not tell you. Heck the person answering the phone probably did not work there 5 years ago, and if he did, was he the one who placed the orders from the supplier? I doubt it. Look to the house to tell the story. If the copper is lightly tarnished, it could be location near the beach. On the other hand, it could be 20 sheets of GWB out of 600 in the whole house. If there is heavy corrosion on copper in the house then it is a possible hazard to people. Regardless of which the building systems are compromised. How would you feel if you bought a new house and had to replace the pipes, HVAC, and structural components every 5 years? Should the buyer be strapped with this higher maintenance requirement? People’s health is another issue all together. Is it like Mold a decade ago? Maybe. Unfortunately, like the video a couple of weeks ago (in another string) about asbestos siding materials in the 40's and 50's it was the miracle product. Today we have a different opinion. Use caution when making the call on Chinese drywall. The repair is strip the house to the studs, replace the copper, and start over. It is a big call, and right now the question is who covers the price.
  22. You can take samples of the wallboard, usually 3-4" diameter. I can send them to my Lab in Boston for sampling. You should definately look for signs of metal corrosion prior tot he testing. Ramon
  23. It is all garbage even inside the vent cap. Vycor has an exposure limit of 60 days. Remove and replace. Download Attachment: TP_132A.pdf 69.39 KB
  24. Makes sense.
