  1. Yep calorie reduction works. I used to drink great tasting beer, never was a light beer drinker, or light anything for that matter. My wife and I quit smokes 5 years ago (happy newyear) we concentrated on the not smoking and bedamned the weight. As I started to inflate I mentioned that my uniforsm are a little snug, she says 'well your packing it on' my wife eh,,so I said lets change what we are doing. she started the SouthBeach menu. I was resistant until I started seeing what we can eat that is healthy less or zero carbs. I changed my 165 calorie 6.5% beer and switched to Amercican training beer Coors Light it has approx 90 calories and is only 4%. I hated it, it took about ten beers to get a buzz, I was drinking like a man possesed where was the beer buzz, and while I was saying that I noticed I could see below my stomach, with out changing I had lost 10 pounds..its the intake, get a book on carbs,,,its pretty crazy reading...
  2. I admit to not following my own advice latley, but alot of the time, its motivation or the lack their of...This April I turn 47. Retired from army 3 years, completed 26. Yep, was 17. Back then I was bullet proof, so were you guys. I can think of a dozens aches and pains that hit me on a daily basis. The problem feeling that way is compounded by the memory of why it hurts today. Biking accident, the day I tried snowboarding (bad scene), any day during my basic para course, several vehicle roll overs, smash up derby, my list, like your is extensive. With age we think diferently, we think we are still superman, nope, we think that the extra pie is okay, cause its going to snow tonight and I will shovel it all and reason off 350 calories. When we were young burning off calories was as easy as eating that apple pie, not so much now. For most men, the metabolism slows down, libido goes south and our normal levels of testostrone are inadequate. You can't change getting older, but you can get healthier. So, we identified the problem " I am over weight 15 pounds". Create a reason to lose "I want to dance at my granddaughters wedding. You have to be self exciting at this point, and have the drive and motivation to carry out that plan. If you just follow the top ten list above, it will alone assist you in at least making your body feel better, and losing some weight in the process. Only you know how your body performs. Eating fish (salmon), nuts (cashews), getting olive oil into your menu (salad). Stop eating anyting with the words: creamy, ranch and battered or deep fried. I love walking, used to love the 10 mile rucksack marches. So I now get on my snowshoes with civilain pack, load it with everything, start light and then work up to 35lbs in it. I walk through the woods at a pace of 3-4kms an hour. I love winter. I also have an eliptical machine and treadmill. The eliptical is better, no impact. It took me a bit to get used to the elpitical but now I come off that and feel great. I dont want NIKE suing me but their slogan is spot on....'Just Do It' dosnt matter how old, just do it properly and no one gets hurt. Like we used to say in the Airborne.."Whats a volleyball game without an ambulance waiting",,,, seriously...
  3. Okay troops Sgt Maj Mongo wants your attention: I spent a lifetime training troops to be combat effective, whoever they were, age, size or gender. Any one who has been in the army/airborne will tell you that soldiers are by virtue of doing PT everyday 'professional athletes'. And I was the ass kicker, name taker. So what I would love to impart on all of you, including adding my fat ass of 225 @ 6', is this: 1. Write down everything you take into your body, and pay attention to what is leaving your body: blood sweat tears etc. 2. Water is your best friend, never be more than an arms reach of your water bottle. Coors Light is a great substitute for heavy beer. 3. Take the Blood pressure test at any Pharmacy, its free. Re-check in one month. 4. Take your resting pulse, before coffee, before your first smoke, before you yell at kids wife dog. Re-check in one month. 5. Weigh your self once a week only, empty, naked, empty. 6. For results you have to reduce then stop caffene, sugar and carb boosters (RedBull, Amp Rockstar etc). If you use this stuff its like adding octaine boost, it wont help you. Your body has to starting feeding off itself. 7. Add an extra meal or two, find a meal between lunch and one between supper. South Beach has a great menu and your wife probably has the books or a friend she knows. Its a menu change not a diet. 8. If you have not trained in a long time or are in not the best shape, take the first few weeks and do nothing more than stretching and extremely light weights. Spend the time to warm up your body. You wouldnt rev up the car until the oil pressure was up would you. 9. Ignore most big results in the first two weeks, you should be able to lose 8pounds in 10 days. Its holding that off for the next month as you start adding muscle, which weighs more fat. 10. Finally, listen your your body, if its saying slow down, do it. You can always push harder later. 'Where the mind goes, the body will follow'
  4. I gather building one is easier as well.
  5. The catholic church in town is huge by anyones standards. Only those, like me , who ask, 'that must be a brick to heat' hear the response, the parking lot is the cover for the ground source heat pump. Not having any reason to go in there beyond curiosity, I found out that they heat it up very well in the winter and is an excellant source of AC in the hot summer week we get up here. It is quite deeply layed, couldnt find out further info. Being a home owner twice over, I would make one change to my heating, and that is 'hydronic in floor/slab radiant'. Any one living up here thinking about building, is not thinking of themselves when they build for the winter, forced air, regardless of how you heat it up has many drawbacks . The cost of radiant heating will be recovered in the short term. And my generator will power it during the blackouts (often)..
  6. I live in Eastern Ontario, right now outside temp is -20c. My Air Source Heat pump is the priamry source of heat. When the temp differential is below -15c the aux and emerg heat coils start up. I do have a wood stove for days like today when its more effiecient to have supplemental heat than have the aux heat from the heat pump. I modified the cold air return to pick up some of the heated air in the basement and have it pass thru the plenum, then recirculate it to all elevations. If I can keep my basement warm at -20c outside the whole house is warm. I had an HE Oil stove in my last house. Worked great, but fuel cost went crazy. They tried to convince me to switch to Gas, forget that. Pound for pound gas cannot compete with anything. The only thing I see good about gas is that it is clean burning. The fact that the supplier has a line running to my house and he controls the cost of it is aikin to holding a gun to my head,,, so no to gas, yes to heat pumps and for supplemtal heat a wood stove is the answer. Well its my answer I live beside a forest, and I own an axe or two. Oh yeah, my electrical bill is at least 30% lower than when I was using just oil . I also factored in the cost of wood, still cheaper and cleaner. No fuel smell inside the house and I can dig anywhere outside without blowing up the area. my two cents are free
  7. You boys gotta pay half that to Uncle Sam. So Erby will only get $80 million dollars. How many Inspection would you have to complete for that salary....
  8. Luck comes home...my kids are home for the season. My wife wanted to go play bingo, cash prize over $5000. So, my youngest say yes, I say, hockey game you guys go and have fun. About two hours after they left I recieve a text from the boy: MOM just won $2000 dollars. Like you guys, I figured that it was a joke on me, because they were pretty cocky when they left the house, something about were going to win bla bla bla. Well when they came in the house with the cheque for 2K. I say congrats to them and quietly hope that my gift value just went up...and it did..a merry christmas it was
  9. Brad. I have been on the OAHI forum, this one (TIJ) and a few others. I like this one, very much. I love info at my finger tips and this place has it in spades. I also see thier names on other places I go. TIJ is respected from what I can tell. As a new member I have had the opertunity to read everything and everything is avail to read, they have hung the laundry out. I feel like I am walking into the unknown. If a small percent of whats written is true about the org, they need to work on uniting the membership. Thankfully, I am retired with pension. I only work because my ADHD prevents me from sitting around doing nothing. Hoping to have more exchanges in the future. Merry Christmas Steve Gazo -mongo-
  10. The health plan will save Americans money Mining lithium for hybrids is environmentally sound and the fuel savings justify the means Diet pop helps you keep weight off Brad Manor will be a bigger asset to you than any organization. Pick the true statement What a nice endorsment for Brad. Thank you Your forgot: I am with the government and here to help.
  11. Come on, I am the only one who admits to having anything to do with OAHI? The association website claimed thousands of members. This is not encouraging...
  12. GPS where the hell do you guys live. Seriously, I was watching Bear Grylls last night on TV. He started the second day of his treck complaining that he left his gps on overnight and now the batteries are dead. Man v Technology
  13. Nice to meet you. Thank you and have a wonderful Christmas Steve
  14. Well, if youve been following anything I wrote, I am aligned with OAHI. I am not inspecting yet, still have some courses and a couple more pages of reading, amongst other things. So, I guess I am giving a 'shout out' to the Ontario boys... mongo
  15. I purchased a bag of Mortar, I have about a dozen brick ties as well. I have done lots with brick, this isnt one of them...I have to place it on hold until I find some angle iron for the lintle. I have two places on the wall where I will need to have openings. 1 at the water shut off from the well, 2 the electrical box. So I will look for some 1/4 inch angle or flat stock. thank you all again,,,I will post pics as I go,,,should be good for laugh mongo
  16. okay, Any type of mortor will do?I have about 120 bricks, shouldn't need much mprtpr then, eh? Refernece the ties, will they hold the heat well and not transfer it to the main wall.... thanx
  17. All, I finally found some nice brown brick to place between the wood stove and the drywall. I dry stacked it but took it down after about 7 bricks high. I think that I should cement or glue them together. I have seen a product called PL that will glue everything it touches, but can I use it this close to the woodstove. Or should I use cement. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Stephen G
  18. we had lots of soldiers bring electrical appliances with them when they re-patted back to canada, some mentioned that their 220v 50hz washing machine spins a little faster on this side of the pond. [:-dunce]
  19. looks like a European 220v recepticle. couldnt post a pic, copy European 220v recepticle into google
  20. scene : man in back holds up hand and says ' I am interested' thank you steve
  21. My background is electrical mechanical hydraulic carpentry....about ten years ago our maintenance building was plagued with repairs. So many electrical and machine repairs or replacement. Had to be a more cost effective way to maintain this equip. We already had maint schedules in place, but they were obviously not good enough. Enter the Flir camera. Someone brought one in and showed us what it did, crazy results. He started off at the bldg main panel and showed us all sorts of very hot connections, an anomoly. Not good. We further discussed the use of TI in our compressors, electric motors and hyrdaulics. The "Predictive Maintenance" schedules were created, a camera eventually purchased and someone took the Level I course (wasnt me). And we baselined all of the equipment. Interpreting the results was interesting even fun. This was the big part. Just because the camera shows you something you cannot jump to a conclusion, that what you see, or what your telling someone else you see, is gospel. This is where you better have your ship wired tight. A missed call or a call that creates the tear down of a wall, machine or hydraulic motor can prove costly. Remembering that your going to have a record of this, if this goes legal, a more experienced Thermographer 'Expert' will have a chance at discrediting or at the very least create doubt on your technical ability to read and interpret accurately what you claimed in the first place. Its a camera, right? point and click. My point (or ramble) is that if and when you get that camera and the courses, you only report what you can back up with strong troubleshooting and expertise to support your camera pics. If you cannot, leave it in your bag. I dont have the course, but have experience with TI IR. Knowing how to read the hot bodies and possible conduction and reflection on your 3sqinch screen be confusing. I have seen hot spots that were created by not setting the camera up properly. oops sorry we ripped that apart. (caveat emptor, when buying a camera) good morning, I am off to shovel more snow thanx steve
  22. I was only stating the standard DS answer to whenever I hear that...maybe its the canadian birds, but you know thats not true...welcome aboard marine/soldier...I am starting to think we could hold roll call...platoon strength so far
  23. you have never been up in a Herucles CC130 AC. You would ask for one, or two... ...and its not the jump, its the plane ride. Once that plane is about 20min out of the DZ we are all standing. Thats when you see who has the iron stomach
  24. type in Canadian Paratroopers utube
  25. huah, all the way. And your right. When I did my para crse they force fed you how safe it was, the specs, each riser broken down. Inversion skirt keeps it open and air obstacles out. The ride in the bird was the most terrifying. Why else bring a chute. A hercy bird doesnt land the greatest. So our PI's instilled the idea that regardless that your a 195lb man strapping on, 35lb main, 15lb res, 100+ruck, lets add snowshoes and rifle and webbing, double door smash 16 plane formation. middle of the stick inboard,,,is this safe... Did you eat, you might wanna hold on to it, long hump ahead P hour 0220hrs, is this ship safe? yes jumper have a good one. I crossed trg with 10 Mountain Div and the Italians in Somalia (TransallAC) Feet and knees together, chin on your chest, 5 points of contact Fair winds soft landings
