  1. On a kitchen faucet-the type with the valve handle that pulls out to the side to turn on the water and then moves from front to back to control temperature. Should the hot increase as you push the handle rearward, that's what I commonly see. I had one today where the water temperature rose when the handle was pulled forward. This one looks to be installed backwards as the handle is commonly on the right. Click to Enlarge 56.12 KB
  2. Thanks
  3. Single wall vent connector for a water heater going into a masonry chimney.
  4. Does anyone have any info on the clearance of closed cell Spray Polyurethane Foam from a gas supplied metal flue pipe. I encountered some in a basement and it's about 1/2" away in spots, not to mention overspray on the flue itself. Thanks ahead of time.
  5. I came across this web site on the NJ ALPHI web site. It has some good info on date codes for hvac and water heaters. http://www.buildingcenter.org/
  6. Banana Slug, I've seen them only once, in Muir Woods, Northern CA. The beer thing for slugs works really well, although for the larger ones your going to need a porter or a stout.
  7. From what I've heard there are and or were very few if any cases of lead poisoning from water lines. I heard it from an old school plumber that the Copper lobby some several decades ago was all about the bad news on lead in order to promote the installation of said copper. Most of the lead in humans comes from eating paint chips, etc. A lot of the lead in soil comes from pre unleaded gasoline, the lead particles from emmisions would settle on the soil.
  8. It does not matter what the R value of a stone wall is in a 200 year old home. You really need to be concerned about how moisture and air are moving (or not moving) between the interior and exterior of the home. Just focusing on insulation is short sighted. Controlling air infiltration, exfiltration and moisture movement is, in my mind, more important. What insulation? It's a stone wall, there is no insulation outside of the stone acting as it will. This is premilary as I have only been on the property for about 60 minutes, that includes seeing the house, barn and walking 4 plus acres of wooded lot in the snow, uphill, both ways. I intend to take all of the steps needed to preserve an old building while staying as comfortable as possible and that would include moisture intrusion and elimination. As far as I can tell the house shows no signs of any moisture problems in the living space, basement or attic but a second visit will be accomponied by a more thorough look.
  9. Thanks Tom, that would be cool to see.
  10. I have been in touch with the seller and I am awaiting information on fuel usage.
  11. Marc, I am looking at a possible purchase of said stone home for myself. It is heated with an oil fired boiler, hot water baseboard. The price of fuel oil up here is now around 3.50 to 3.99 a gallon. That's about three to four times the price of natural gas. Could influence the decision.
  12. Negated in which way, keeping inside the heat from the interior heating sources during cold periods or the opposite? And how does that relate to the stones ability to absorb passive solar on the SW facing walls? Or more simply, how is it going to feel in the winter and how does it compare to an insulated wood framed wall of the same period?
  13. Does anyone have information on the r value of stone walls, dating approximately 1800. Northern NJ. Not sandstone. It looks like indigenous stone, irregular sizes and was originally parged. Approx. 24" thick. Thanks in advance.
  14. I'm not tryng to belittle PA or any other state's inspectors by any means, it mentioned the respsonsiblilty of licensess in the article so does that make an inspector responsible legally, that' all.
  15. But there is no "Licensing" of home inspectors in PA.
  16. I just encountered one last week on a dryer vent, third floor of a four floor building. It has a timer that ran the fan for about 15 min after the dryer shut off. It also has a screen installed in the duct between the dryer and the fan to protect the fan from lint buildup.
  17. The old VW buses has gasoline supplied heaters.
  18. What would one specifically call an HVAC system that uses hot water form a boiler to heat the coil in an air handler?
  19. Could be dust sucked in by the exhaust fan, if there is one.
