  1. That insulation was removed in 1978 when I was in high school, I have no idea where it is but I did tell them to address the rest of it throughout the basement.
  2. I just had a furnace in a bedroom closet yesterday, and it also had a stackable washer dryer. Solid bi fold doors. Direct vent for exhaust but no provision for combustion air. Click to Enlarge 33.76 KB
  3. True, but common unfortunately. Thanks for all the input fellas.
  4. I was in a circa 1890 boarding house recently. Central heat with steam boiler(s), Utica circa 1978. I have not seen a set up like this before, it looks like two boilers with individual burners attached to each other as you would sections of a radiator. When tested only one side fired up. Is the other side to provide addtional heat should the one burner be inadequate or should both run together. There is only one thermostat, TPRV, low water cut off , etc. New to me, anyone familiar with this arrangment? Click to Enlarge 96.2 KB Click to Enlarge 46.66 KB
  5. Absolutely. And to the closet to bedroom thing, in an area with septic systems the engineering is based on population which is based on the number of bedrooms. Many times people will install a room with no closet or entry door and disqualify it as a bedroom. This allows them a smaller and cheaper on site wastewater system. Emphasis on the cheaper. Later they add the closet and door and voila. I live in an area with a lot of OSWT systems and have seen such a thing more than once.
  6. Of course he does, just as Martha Stewart paints her own porch like her grandpa did.
  7. Yup, I have one in my house that I shut off every winter and when I turn it on in the spring it leaks into the basement and I have to tighten the locking nut. The seats get funky in the old valves and will likely not seat again when you close it, thus a drip at the hose bib. Make a note that it was off and you did not operate it.
  8. They need to be integrated into the actual roofing material so there is a single installation.
  9. I agree with Kurt. His site is great but can be coma inducing trying to navigate. As I recall in years past it was not that way.
  10. You'll get more work from a happy client.
  11. Good chance the internal chimney is unlined as well. What is its purpose?
  12. Hard to tell from the angle of the photo, would the chimney clear the eave if it was extended? If not-Remove the masonry chimney and install a metal flue and you could get it around the soffit. Install sheet rock where needed. Install firestops at the same time. You can do anything you want if you have enough money. They need to fix this stuff as it's a life safety issue. Are those asbestos shingles on the exterior?
  13. I just want to know how old it is, that's all. My buyer asked and I would like him to have an answer.
  14. I am under the distinct impression that "pigtails" are a method used to attach multiple wires to a single lug by using the wire nut as a junction from multiple wires to a single wire which then goes to the lug. Those are just splices.
  15. Does anyone know the date codes for Amtrol boiler mates? 41g, serial#142885
  16. What does it taste like?
  17. These rooms look like something from that house makeover show.
  18. Very often those vinyl replacements have a date code inside the panes.
  19. I agree with Mr.K. I come across those silo like entry foyers all the time and just imagine the waste of heating and cooling needed.
  20. Yes. NJ requires well casings extend at least 12" above grade, unless the casing is in a well pit or pump house. So I thought, although I had heard 18" Thanks
  21. It's a steel casing under the cap. Common sense prevails and I told them to raise the casing and cap to prevent contamination. My feeling is that the previous homeowner raised the grade around the top of the casing and cap.
  22. How high above grade does the top of the casing and the cap need to be for a drilled well? This one is right on grade. Is there a requirement or just that it needs to be high enough to avoid contamination? Click to Enlarge 114.69 KB
  23. If there is a problem with the door binding that explains the overwound spring.
  24. I guess it's better than blemishing the floor? They should have read the instructions and disclaimers on the packaging.
  25. Sure does. Another repair alternative is recycled old lumber from an old building demolition. There are lumber yards that specialize in this stuff and that would likely be a stronger repair and true to the original construction.
