Sink drain leak

My mom’s bathroom sink drain has a leak I will be fixing.  Does this type of junction use the rubber slip joint seals?  If not, what else might I need?    I’d like to be prepared when I get there to avoid additional trips to get parts.  Thanks, John

Yes, there's a beveled plastic coupling washer.  Fixing leaks at that joint are usually a matter of tightening the coupling nut or sometimes realigning.  Most often, the leak is from above - at the stopper arm assembly or around the strainer body. flange.

I'd go ahead replace the chrome-plated tailpiece too.

Thanks Bill.  I was there previously and it’s definitely leaking at the coupling where said beveled plastic washer would be.  I attempted to fix it by tightening it.  I was able to turn it about 1/4 turn by hand.  After that, it leaked even worse.   When I go back on Friday, I’ll have some new seals with me to install.

I assume Bill recommends replacing the chrome tail pieces because it is already pitting/rotting through. All the chrome drains you buy at the hardware store or big box are cheap quality and corrode fast. Stick with PVC so you're not going back to your moms for more drain issues in the near future.

Those bevel washers often deform more when tightening.   Good luck

Update.  My initial diagnosis was wrong.  The leak turned out to be the stopper lever connection.  I tightened the nut about 1/2 turn with my fingers and it’s fixed.  I actually disassembled the stopper mechanism first and cleaned all the gunk out.  The drain works much better now, no more leaks and Mom is happy.  
 

I really need to slow down and double check things better.  I think I’m getting a little rusty as I age.
