  1. I agree start with compliance now and talk about new regs later. Did a real HI look at the house prior to purchase?
  2. It's all just details.
  3. Sorry I even opened this subject.[:-dunce]
  4. Hey, 90 in 28 minutes watching movies with my 5 year old. I hoped testing got a little tougher than that. I'm just looking to stay ahead of the game and find something to add knowledge and credibility. I have had little if any help from anyone but you guys and have had to figure most of it out for my self. I want to look at what I'm doing and be sure when I walk away That I have exceeded my own standards. Beyond that, I've watched this board for a while and I think that maybe the opinions differ but I trust most here to give me an honest opinion and from there I will have to make my own decisions. I respect you guys and appreciate any input. I am at a point where going it alone is going to get counter productive. Sorry for the ramble. Maybe I will join as many HI associations as I can like Mike said. [:-scared]
  5. I just took the test scored a 90. Got me on a couple with tricky wording but I think the test is very good for a base line. I am a good tester though. With Ohio's new interest in certifying I figured I better get a jump on it. Anybody recommend an Organization? I need good reasons to fork out the dough when I'm a little skeptical of ASHI and their best friend the NAR. Maybe I'm wrong, so set me straight. Thanks
  6. Big developers will order huge lots of equipment and it is not uncommon to see a water heater or furnace that out date the home. I've seen it as much as 2 years. I should charge extra every time I have to spend 15 minutes explaining how it works to my clients. Also the age of the house could be determined by when the paper work was recorded which also gives them a 3-8 month jump on the eqipment right off the bat. Sorry for the ramble, it seemed like you were wondering about the age difference. If nothing else I feel better[:-headach

    What Vent?

My old boss would call that "Yard art"
  8. I'm getting rid of some extra equipment anyone interested in buying a TIF 8500A Carbon Monoxide Analyzer with voice contact me. This thing is 3 years old and been used maybe 5 times. I will guarantee it works and is as described or all money will be returned less shipping costs. Email me I'll send you the pictures.
  9. This is exactly why I avoid code references. I would simplify the argument by providing my pics of bathroom vents that terminate in attic spaces which just happen to be surrouned by mold. My clients don't care about code at that point and the AHJ can quote code till he's blue in the face- my butt is covered.
  10. I think the only rule is be careful.
  11. I'm going to report that electrician to PETA.
  12. It's a "farg'n bastage" from the movie Jonny Dangerously with Michael Keaton. It would be one born with out a father. BCS requires the biggest win to be number one. The days of putting in the 2nd string to let your adversary walk away with their dignity are over. Mike Garcia GO Vols!
  13. Bruce, The only material suitable for drain pans in certain residential applications is the new Betal alloy. Mike Garcia Digging a very deep ditch.
  14. The first time I saw a $300,000 house with no drip and no felt I almost fell off my ladder. Every roofer I talked to said it was "common". I write it up as defect and mention manufacturer blah, blah, blah. Oh yeah i also mention nuisance leaks being possible and more likely with age. Mike Garcia Sometimes I feel all alone.
  15. At least it's right side up... I think.
  16. Buy exterior carpet adhesive and use a vinyl notched trowel so that a)it will hold up to the weather. b)it will come off when you want. If you don't stick it down right it could come loose and then be a trip hazard. If it's wood steps go rent a carpet tacker and staple the step at the rise/run crease. If there is an overhang at the step to rise stapel there also to create a tailored look which will be more secure. Make sure the carpet is good and warm. Mike Garcia Former floor mechanic club
  17. I had a bad fixture one time where the water would come on and then after a few seconds the pipes would bang or knock a little and then trickle. Turned out to be shale in the fixture. Mike
  18. I use a fogger. Same as for the flue for furnace and water heater.
  19. Getting in the wall may not be too bad if the hammer is behind the vanity. Any holes can be rough patched and then covered by the vanity. Draining the system may be the best alternative. If the smell is central I would say clean the trap under the sink. You may be disturbing something odorous when you turn the water on. You should also describe the odor to narrow down options. Would there happen to be a wooden drain pan anywhere in the house? Perhaps at the ever elusive second water heater in the dining room with the candle stick? Mike Garcia Help, Help, I'm being repressed!
  20. Ask hime whose leftovers his wife picked out for their house. Mike Garcia
  21. I think someone just came to stir up some crap and recruit for another HI forum and I think he meant you. I'm sure glad I don't have all that extra information pushing on my skull turning me into a maniacle question asker. Mike Garcia Do your homework and it will come to you, if not...[:-?help]
  22. Cheap vinyl, happens all the time. Mostly under refrigerators and around vents in "Mobile Homes" and "Pre-Manufactured Homes". Mike Garcia Floor boy extrordinaire.

    Iced AC coil

Sounds like a Paul Harvey filter to me.
  24. Brian, If you paint one side per year you will be painting at least one side a year for the rest of your life. Paint it all in one week and take 4-8 years off, or pay a professional and enjoy a nice cold beverage after a long day inspecting hot attics. Mike Garcia, It's not good advice, but it's all your gonna get.
  25. Jeff, I didn't know anything until I started watching this board. Now, not only do I know how to build a wuden drane pan, I can spell it two. BTW Brian you could have used a ceramic roll-on sealer to water proof that thing just in case you actually need to use it. Of course then it would be pink... All kidding aside Jeff, I have to say these guys are the best and most helpful group of HI's you could ever talk to. They are not afraid to ask questions and never give anyone a hard time for asking really silly questions (of which I'm guilty). Welcome aboard! Mike
