  1. Larry you will not be using those things as much as you think. As has been suggested on this forum in the past, you are better off getting a good telescopic lens for the camera. Remember you can only see one side of any projection thru the roof from the ground unless your eyeball can pop thru the lens as in a cartoon.[:-magnify
  2. Yeah.. I am guessing that was an old house as I have seen this many times in old greystones near the lake, where it made installing new light fixtures an extra trip to the hardware store so the fixture base could be extended past the old gas pipe. They should be disconnected, but we are talking Chicago. Thanks for the link.
  3. Jim just my opinion, but it is not so much the contract as it is the implication to a client when they see such wordage in a contract. To them opinion means reporting on the soundness and adequacy of the home thus their new expectation is that we are useless. With out opinion we are impotent
  4. Sure do.750 Suzuki Intruder 1991 which is perfect for around the city, and I just walked in after a pleasant day riding ,so I may have changed my mind about selling. Back to the wire.I used to pull plenty of that stuff out of old converted gas pipe and found it close to impossible to yank out. When you see it you can expect to find alot of electrical tape wrapped around it in junction boxes to repair the broken covering.
  5. Looks like bakelite with the number 200 under the bulb..
  6. I agree as I have seen that type many times while changing light fixtures, and it usually pretty old.The stuff next to it with the red caps is BX and I will go out on a limb guessing they ran long lengths of that stuff replacing the old cloth or rag wrap as you guys call it. My personal experience is in finding the wire covering on the copper so brittle that it deteriorates as you try to work with it. If you look close I think you can see broken covering on the black rag wrap conductor. Larry welcome and what type of bike do you have.
  7. Good tip Gary,as we now know it doesn't search past the Heading.Something easy to forget about when composing a cute title. Perhaps something like this would help. Rough Day (roofing). Is this correct Mike?
  8. When I was a kid I remember overhearing someone mentioning they had got even for some wrong, by pouring cement down the vent pipe. Imagine try to get rid of that.
  9. That is not looking like a professional installation.I can not see all the details but to begin with, the pipe on the right looks like gas pipe, with the top box looking home made from sheet metal. Mr Katen should be jumping in on this one.
  10. Most likely pergo would have been a better choice.
  11. P.S do not forget to test voltage.
  12. We are all counting on you spy guy.
  13. The sag is possibly caused buy certain mixtures used in the manufacturing process, such as lead which definitely does sag over time. This is documented in numerous stained glass windows.but with so much disagreement it is obvious you could make an argument for either side. Chad I meant to say amorphic, but am used to using the term morphic resonance as related to biology
  14. Glass is generally treated as an amorphous solid rather than a liquid, though different views can be justified since characterizing glass as either 'solid' or 'liquid' is not an entirely straightforward matter. Pasted this off wikipedia which is a fun easy place for quick info, but not always factual as it is comprised of many opinions that get self edited. Have a book titled The complete Book of Creative Gass Art By Polly Rothenberg which explains on page 6 that once scoring glass separation should be achieved within a few minutes as molecules of glass will actually begin to close ranks thus not allowing a clean break.May not be liquid, but sure doe's describe flow. Bill after looking through the internet I see that prevailing opinion is against me,but after working with it all these years I feel it is a plastic like material and can flow with heat. The question than becomes can light act as a magnifiying glass creating enough heat to cause flow over time. this possibility does not seem to enter the disscussion in what I am reading. Sometimes these scientist types do not look at external factors such as this.
  15. I am too lazy to look up the sources at this very moment, but after spending years working with the stuff and out of coincidence having a conversation on the very subject only hours before this thread I can assure you it is true. The first time I'd ever heard the subject was as a kid going to the state capital and asking the tour guide why the glass in the old capital building was so wavy looking.Other than that I had taken kinetic and neon art courses at the Art Institute of Chicago where the same thing was taught, Over the years I have referenced this many times. In the past I have owned a Neon sign business and am presently trying to develop a mixed media glass tile.
  16. I say remove the cover plate when he's not looking.
  17. Thank you Kurt.Did you see my pic,and please for the love of will you share what you found out about Chi-Town code.P.S I am doing a final walkthrough next week at that site.
  18. They look as if they would invert when you step on them. Did you use them?
  19. Hi Scott..Are you sure that is the original glass as after over 100 years the glass would more than likely be distorted from morphic flow. In other words it is basically a liquid. From the picture they look sharp and clear.
  20. Kurt I realize that we do not quote local code but was interested in this one particular instance due to the fact much has been made with regard to safety of decks and porches in our local area. You live and work around here so you Know about the famous porch collapse on wrightwood ave. I was just looking for info, and a few of the forum members were nice enough to provide a few links . Unfortunately I was confused as to why this would degrade to comments about inspectors making up there own rules,as I doubt any one here has that sort of intention. I for one appreciate your experience, but you also must realize that making certain kinds of comments turns away potential contributers to this forum.Even you must see that many view what is posted with a much smaller percentage posting. The reason may have something to do with the attitude of public humiliation that that sometimes exists when newer posters appear. Often this is used to make a point such as my assoc is better than yours.or your report is a piece of cr-p. Why is it that someone is only worthy to become an inspector if the are subject to hazing. This is the last time I will express this type of opinion, but hope it is food for thought. Kurt believe it or not I find to be you a fountain of Knowledge but if I had a thin skin would not be posting. Most people do have a thin skin so we never get to hear from them on this site. What a shame. Download Attachment: kurt.jpg 69.1 KB Bet you are the only one here who Knows what my toy in the picture is.
  21. Kurt I hope I am misinterpreting the above thread as a subtle jab at me. The whole reason for asking the question was to gain knowledge to back up what what I thought, and if there were facts to back it up. Sorry if I am wrong in assuming this is a safe place to go for information as I now realize it may not be. What a shame, if this keeps people from actively participating out of fear they will have to be subjected to public humiliation at the expense of a few with superiority complexes.Any way my question which I will once again repeat, was regarding Chicago code only. Here is the link which I will have time to research later today. No innuendos there : http://www.amlegal.com/library/ This may be a good link for all as my only goal is to help people, and refuse to apologize for lack of agenda.
  22. Thanks for the info. I tried to get through to the department of buildings with no success today That must be why all these sites are selling Chicago code books. Three years ago when building new stairs for the back of my house, around the same time I did recall reading they were required to be solid. This is why I had sealed them off when I could have saved time leaving them open. Also I thought that this provision had to do with feet slipping to far allowing you to trip when walking up.Not so much the kid can fall thru.
  23. Kurt we do not do local code and this specific inspection ended up being between walls of the unit anyway. I may be mistaken but thought I had read somewhere about Chicago now requiring solid risers.
  24. Wow ..I sure could have used you guys this morning, when fighting off those whom think giving out coupons to realtors is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
  25. With out a doubt I knew it was a remote distribution panel but was not allowed access to any common areas,so I made sure to disclaim what I could not see. Thanks for the help though. Electric is a funny thing as I find it tougher to analyze than to run it.
