  1. I've never seen it done that way, but then again, I don't see much brick veneer. Most of the buildings I look at are solid multiple wythe load bearing masonry, lime mortars, limestone details....that sort of thing. Never really understood brick veneer.....seems strange to me.
  2. I don't know why it's bizarre; it's how most of the world does it. Maybe everyone's got it wrong...(?)....
  3. That's the opposite of how it's done here. In Chicago, it's exposed foundation and the first course of brick (hopefully) is above grade. Where else do they bury the first course of brick? Never heard of nor seen it unless it's a screw up.
  4. I wouldn't bother doubling anything either, never seems to do anything.
  5. Header? Except there's no apparent place to take it to at the other side, and the accessible joist isn't doubled....
  6. Grading involves bringing dirt in, taking dirt away, moving around what's already there, or combinations of all of them. Create some swales. Direct water where you want it. Because you shouldn't be messing with the brick at this point. You could, but it'd be stupid. Landscaping properly makes stuff prettier anyway.
  7. Impact resistant waterproof camera. Don't get one with the extendo lenses. If you need another with super zoom, get a cheap super zoom. Don't obsess on which camera; there's enough camera obsessing going on. AFT cameras are very good, as in Any ****ing Thing. Allen wrench for freeing up stuck disposers and the other is for pleasuring realtors.
  8. Vertically oriented townhouses are notorious (around here anyway) for having lousy AC at the upper floors. Sounds like someone jackwired the system so they could control the AC at the upper floor stat.

    P trap?

I see this a lot in the old dumps....I think it's intended for just that reason.
  10. Clarification....."can't be fixed without tearing it all out". Changing stairs means mega major alterations to just about everything.
  11. We take care of snakes during our annual Whacking Day festivities. Lisa: How can you people turn on snakes after all they've done for you? Grampa: I'm an old man, I hate everything but Matlock. Ooh, it's on now...... Homer: Marge, should I whack slow or fast? Barney: (whacking invisible snakes) Snakes! Snakes everywhere! Lenny: You gettin' ready for Whacking Day? Barney: What's Whacking Day?
  12. I've had the best experience with Olight.
  13. Anything taking an 18650 battery that's >800 lumens, and adjustable. Amazon blows stuff out occasionally; I try to hit the sales.
  14. Never heard nor seen these. Googled, found these Maybe this one is similar. Stone lined. Sort of. Sounds good though.
  15. I've been developing a bunch of content for a site, and yes, it's really easy to go off in prose. I handed off the stuff to an editor, and they didn't even work it....they just handed it back and said "try again". I mashed it down by 2/3's, handed it back, and then they started editing. If we're going to be relevant, we have to rethink how we do this thing. And yes, screwed up stairs can't be fixed without tearing it out. Builders with their silly cartoons masquerading as plans are a big part of the problem.
  16. Agreed. $500 for a good engineer to nail it down is cheap. You're going to have 10x that in material. I was surprised the engineer was so cheap; around here it'd be double that.
  17. That's more what I had in mind. Simple, to the point, list form. With a picture or two. Make it as simple as possible but not simpler.
  18. That's not quite what I meant, but it's good to see someone is paying attention.
  19. Any of the current forms....Twitter, Facebook, agglomerated news feeds, Reddit, any of the news agglomerating organizations stuff.....they collect and present information in bite size amounts with links for those wanting to go deep. This is how people read and gather information nowadays. It's a 140 character world, like it or not. I'm not proposing reports ala Twitter, but I am proposing HI reports might want to pay attention to where the world has gone. That folks don't know what I'm talking about when it's exploding all around them speaks to how disconnected we are.
  20. It's the food pipe for the squirrels that operate the treadmill supplying power to the house.
  21. My favorite part is "......the chance of falling goes up". You're pretty good with words, but "having to bear the temporary discomforts of traverse" needs work. I've been studying reading forms and reading habits for a few years now, and there's a complete disconnect between information gathering forms that folks adopt and how HI reports are getting written. Opposite ends of the spectrum. Are HI's immune to having to consider how people (meaning the general public, not me or my best friends) read and consume information nowadays? I'm not proposing reports with clickbait to celebrity sites, but it seems the profession is going against the tide.
  22. Approved or not, it's stoopid. I'd take it out, patch the hole with hydraulic cement, put a mod bit patch over the the area, backfill it, and say goodbye.
