  4. Correct me i I am wrong but oil piping would usually be black iron and not galvanized. But I still like Tom's answer best
  5. In our climate here in Montreal this is minimum standard practice
  6. Usually that is what they do ! I always wondered why the manufacturer's do not have a dedicated fastening system for them. It appears that none of the commercially available screws are 100% compatible withthat material and usually revert to commercially avalable deck or wood screws. THe thread is not really the best. A coarser thread would work better something like a large melamine type screw thread would probably work bes
  7. Nice Looks like it's got the Tiki Lounge thing happening
  8. True some of these type of furnaces may be 30 yrs old, however usually elements may fail and individual elements can be replaced hence extending the life of the furnace. As a result a good maintenance log and manual near by is a good indication of the reliabilty of the unit.
  9. Keep running across this type of insulation from time to time. It's white and looks like sheared wool. There are little white bits like rice in it. I assume its mineral wool. Please let me know and wht the ''R'' value of this is if anyone knows. Trying to make sure my charts are correct. Cheers Click to Enlarge 56.48 KB Click to Enlarge 56.36 KB
  10. Its like those magnets they sell for your car's fuel line. More Mileage... MPG....lol
  11. around these parts we are required to report any tank more than 15 yrs old requires replacement. Fuel oil companies will not service anything over 25 yrs old and in the case of new homeowners some insurances will not insure you for oil cleanup anbd any other damages due to a tank older than 15yrs oil. As much a sI do nort want to contradict Jim, the oil cleanup can run anywhere from $30K to $100K to $500K to remove all of the contaminated materials due to an oil spill. I know from one of the apartment buildings I used to own and am happy the insurance picked that one up! Anyhow my rule of thumb is if older than 15 yrs old and/or cannot find an appropriate data plate recommend to replace. Costs $800 to $1000 and umeet the requirements of full coverage. Thx
  12. I like Siemens myself
  13. I could be wrong but FG looks like a lennox or carrier designation try that one first.....
  14. If u run it in reverse would it make a good Still for distilling shine? Great find Love to have one of those for myself
  15. Hi The 6' 8'' probably indicated the linear distance of the filler pipe to the tank inlet. d'ont know why. But there must have been a reason when they installed it.
  16. keep in mind any sealant u use may mildly alter the color of the stone. As a result always do a test in a small non visible area first and let it age a while. In canada i usually use a Glaze 'N'Seal penetrating or wet look sealer. Please follow instructions carefully for best results Cheers
  17. tHx - that what i thought just needed some reassurance
  18. Ok here goes Unit electric DHWT Make: Richmond 6 Model 6CE405-2 Serial: 0905J04053 Went to their site Came across a 6E405-2 no "C" saw this on a sticker on the tank with a CSA Mark Acssuming this is a re-id for Canadian Listed Models. any idea on how to figure out date of Fab? thx
  19. That typr of piping I've run across here in some newer condos for the main water service line. Allof it was Polybutelene (PB)
  20. In case of emergency - Break Glass - lol problem solved
  21. Correct me if i am wrong, but given it is in an insulated cavity - shouldn't it be in a protected box?
  22. Looks like cloth sheathed Romex Typical in older homes. This hose may originally have had 2 prong outlets. They may have been swappped for more modern 3 prongs. They may have bonede the outlets using the ground wire to the electrical box but there probably is no real ground to speak of. Did u pull any outlets and take a pic?
  23. From page 13 of said manual: "If a flame cannot be established within the trial for ignition period, the control will stop the flow of gas. The control will continue to energize the blower (interpurge) and attempt ignition again. If a flame cannot be established after three attempts, thecontrol will lock-out. A red LED light on the control will flash continually indicating a lock-out condition occured. Unplugging the 120VAC power supply to the water heater then restoring power will reset the control. NOTE: The control will perform a self-diagnostic check upon start-up and the LED will flash 3-4 times. During normal operation the LED remains off. A solid red LED indicates that the control must be replaced." As we say in Quebec - Voila !!!!!
  24. I would assume with my limited knowledge ''FR'' means ''Flame Rod'' - Either indicating defective, or needs attention (servicing). See link for manual - As per Fig. 12on pg. 12 defective flame rod would notlet burner go on and hence heat water. Was the water heater operating properly? Probably needs a new flame rod. http://www.gsw-wh.com/pdfs/products/wat ... 817-1B.pdf
  25. Right so I an assuming there is no chemical conversion of the fumes happening Just concentratin all of the guck on the filter in the machine.
