  1. Thanks, Sharkbite says it can be removed and reused. The manual compression ones can too? Old ones I replaced had the crimp inside it that grips the pipe so had to cut them off before I sweated new ones on. Could have been because they were so old maybe? Thanks again. The nut and ferrule stay, the valve comes off.
  2. I would go compression. They are less than 1/3 the price of shark bite and can be removed and replaced if they leak.
  3. If they held it 1" off the wall those gutters would be too short to accommodate the hidden hangers.
  4. You cityfolk are fussy. 9 times out of 10 that's NM in my market. My preference is for a cord and plug. Strain relief and disconnect in one device.
  5. I have one that does both.
  6. There is rust on every metal surface in that pic. That thing lives in a hostile environment. Maybe not under water, but always wet.
  7. It's time that buyers start vetting their own appraiser. We expect them to research and choose us independent of their RE's referral, why not the rest of the parties in their transaction? The last time I tried to refi, the Truth in Lending document estimated my appraisal cost between $250 and $2500 with the bank ordering the appraisal. I told them I would secure my own appraisal or they could pay the fee if they did. They hung up on me.
  8. Fresh news in my email this morning, the FAA has granted a commercial drone use request. http://www.builderonline.com/newsletter ... 0eb4757928
  9. If the cheap stuff looks that good at 75, does one really need the good stuff?
  10. Bad science, questionable protocols, and cheap equipment with lousy accuracy is a decades old theme at EPA. It's the foundation they build everything from.
  11. I say water. There are drip stains on the concrete below the black stains.
  12. They do here. The scary bit is when they install furnaces.
  13. I keep both my bibcocks in the basement so they won't freeze. They are just inside the door, fed by a 3/4" line after the meter but before the whole house filter. If I open them both the flow to the house drops to a trickle.
  14. The Yankees here will know Canadian Tire. They used to advertise on TV here. As far south in NY as I am, Canada is still to the west.
  15. Wiring my KIA was just as fun. The tail light harness is as fine as telephone cable. I had to run a 12v power cable and a bake wire front to back. The brake light switch has 7 leads on it, so I also had to run a brake signal lead back to front for the controller. I'm kicking myself to not trading it for the 56 Buick wagon I found last summer.
  16. I just did a house that had 2 battery powered alarms mounted at the peak of the cathedral ceiling, over 20' off the floor. I didn't test 'em.
  17. My house has a b vent flue exposed like the OP, 24' of vertical. I took the top 2' off when I did the roof a month ago. It was completely blown, acid eroded inside and rusted nearly through outside. The section below is fine. I have IR images of it somewhere. Mid 20s ambient, mid 60s pipe temps, upper 70s at the joints.
  18. It's just like ghosting that occurs on the inside of the building. It can vary based on any one of hundreds of variables. I would think that all the openings have some degree of this. I'd have to see it first hand, and possibly open it up, to see why it's worse on the west side.
  19. Rough Opening.
  20. Conditioned air. It carries water vapor out that then condenses on the cold siding, dust and dirt stick to that before it freezes. It is directly above the windows because the leak is at the RO or between the sash and head jamb, or both.
  21. Cheap ass windows, no insulation at the headers, no insulation in the RO. It's the same ghosting phenomenon that happens on the inside at missing insulation and thermal bridges.
  22. I'm late to the party. I would suggest you advise the owner to request sashes. Most vinyl manufacturers won't have an issue with providing sashes and the repair becomes akin to changing light bulbs. I was involved in a whole house seal failure event with Hurd products. The homeowner was shipped loose IG units under warranty and left to find an installer on their own. No one would touch it and the glass sat in their basement for years.
  23. I thought very inspector had one of those...

  25. If it's wet it is safe to assume there is mold growth. If it has dried up the mold will soon follow. Her headaches will go away when she hires a decent contractor.
