  1. That's what I was thinking also. Every septic system in my county needs an inspection during a property transfer. The very first item on the inspection form is: a. The tank has safety secured tight-fitting lid.
  2. Insufficient separation between siding and ground, gutters discharging next to foundation, poor surface drainage, and obstructed air circulation, I would be surprised if it didn't have growth.
  3. Besides a booster, you'll need to insulate the vent to avoid condensation.
  4. There was a thread awhile ago about raising fees and the affect (or lack of) to our bottom line. I raised mine and the result was an immediate increase in income. I lost the bottom feeders and opened my schedule to more profitable work. Reasonable people expect better quality and performance to come with a price. When I see something with a ridiculously low price, the first thing that crosses my mind is "What's wrong with it?" When a prospect tells me I'm not the cheapest guy they've talked to so far. I respond with a firm "I hope not!
  5. That's what I saw, it looked like a street ell could do the same thing if you lifted the feed an inch, but I don't know much about sprinkler systems. I didn't want to mention it, but it was a union retrofit.
  6. I was just wondering if any of you guys that inspect suppression systems could enlighten me. Why all the fittings? This set up repeated itself over 150 times in the building. This was in a hallway aprox. 6' wide and about 7'6" off the floor. Click to Enlarge 17.3 KB
  7. Looks like a heat exchanger for the domestic loop
  8. This light decided to go out in a pitch dark crawl, that may have biased my opinion. If I may quote Kurt; "Sending crap back to China and dinking around is exactly what I hate; I want something to work." I decided to buy something that doesn't need so much attention. I can only go with my personal experience.
  9. Using tragedy for self promotion. Can you think of a better fit?
  10. Depends where you're at. Most codes call for stacks to protrude anywhere from 6"-12".
  11. My TK-15 lasted about a month. My thinking is that for 80 bucks I shouldn't need service for a while, convenient or not. I'm now using it for a paperweight and haven't had anymore issues.
  12. While inspecting yesterday I came across an old water heater. The woman was trying to sell everything in the house and I was wondering if there is a market for stuff like this. And what is this other device for? I could only Think of a hat stretcher or some kind of medieval torture device. The dome shaped part spreads out as you turn the handle. I did not plug it in, but I imagine it heats up. Click to Enlarge 40.06 KB Click to Enlarge 40.65 KB Click to Enlarge 40.39 KB Click to Enlarge 48.63 KB Click to Enlarge 45.86 KB
  13. Would you write something like that up for blocked fire egress? (if they stayed with the house)
  14. Do you have any info on the previous resident? They could have had dirty damp laundry piled against the wall. Stored items, fish tanks, humidifiers, etc. The walls would have dried out in a short time after all the stuff was carted off. The board in the last picture does not have any mold on it, was it the result of some kind of repair, or access panel?
  15. Click to Enlarge 38.15 KB Appears to be similar to animals which have been known to be ducks. Recommend hiring a competent ornithologist to evaluate.
  16. This forum has helped me technically more times than I can count. But it is discussions such as this which help me examine the value I provide my customer, not just the image. Thanks guys, good stuff.
  17. Could it be from an old water heater? My mother told me a story of when she was pregnant her mother in law paid a whopping $15.00 to have the old coal fired water heater replaced with a "clean" gas model to keep coal dust off my older brother when he was born. Have any of you come across any of these? I've never seen one.
  18. My father-in-law collects old hand tools (the original cordless). While looking at them you can only imagine all the effort that went into cutting and shaping wood back then. Many have handles that are worn down and highly polished from the sweat and callous of the craftsman. I know very little about these things, my son knows absolutely nothing. It's a shame the amount of knowledge that dies with each generation. Oh wait... yea I forgot we can learn everything off the internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. ...live together in perfect harmony. I was wondering if this is somebody's test study? This "install" has been leak free since 1988. I reported it as improper (for more than one reason) but functioning. Click to Enlarge 39.98 KB
  22. Does anyone have any first hand experience with a "RAZ-IR" thermal camera? Its made in China and looks like a Fluke rip off. I'm concerned with durability. It has features of the higher end models and if I can depend on it, I might get one. The salesman told me he has sold a gagillion of them, but I have yet to meet anybody that has heard of the company. I only found two lukewarm reviews online. Thanks for any info.
  23. A prospect called me for a quote a few weeks ago and asked if I used thermal imaging during my inspections. I explained that I currently do not have the equipment. I added that a thermal inspection would be a separate procedure which is not included with a standard home inspection. She then asked me if I could discount my fee because "Mike Holmes uses those cameras and he said it should be part of an inspection." Have any of you guys seen that episode? I would love to see what his SOP consists of. What's next, ground penetrating radar?
