  1. I think Jim K. could put up an Apollo HydroHeat web site and charge a registration fee for folks wanting to post questions. I've never seen one. I'm guessing they're mostly installed in areas that don't need a real central heating system.
  2. True "Side-arm" water heaters aren't connected to house heating boilers. I've always seen heat exchangers for domestic hot water on steam boilers that look like this: Click to Enlarge 23.63 KB
  3. Does it have the texture of paper or cloth?
  4. The garage is for this:
  5. I've found very similar looking devices on commercial and some large residential boilers. They were heat exchangers for live steam to pre-heat the boiler feed water. I've inspected several large industrial steam boilers used for process equipment that have separate boilers to pre-heat the feed water.
  6. The open panel and sides are lined with asbestos too.
  7. Under a carport roof is not considered "indoors". Something to consider - that tank is considered a "point of transfer" and a running vehicle w/in 10' is an ignition source.
  8. Where does one find 6 inches of fiberglass that has R-30?
  9. Me too, but I keep *hoping* it'll happen again. Why is that? Marc The same reason he'll lick a stain to determine the cause.
  10. She said I can't give it to you. Apparently she's satisfied with me.
  11. No biggie. We don't mind answering reasonable questions for folks that care about their homes.

  13. March 2, 2011/Upper Bucks County, PA By Bill Kibbel, Associate Editor - TIJ On February 18, 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission "revised" their original press release regarding Federal Pacific Electric's Stab-lok circuit breakers. This is the press release that experts and many inspectors have condemned as not going far enough to adequately warn of known safety issues regarding this particular electrical equipment. While the change is only the addition of 3 sentences, it is in red and at the beginning of the press release: "Note: CPSC staff advises electricians, homeowners, home inspectors and real estate agents to read and interpret the following press release carefully. The press release announces that the Commission closed the matter without making a determination as to the safety of FPE circuit breakers or the accuracy of the manufacturer’s position on the matter. The Commission advises consumers to take the safety precautions noted in this notice with all circuit breakers and fuses". The full text of the press release can be found here. For additional reading on this subject, refer to the following article by leading electrical expert, Douglas Hansen. FPE panels - Hazard or Hype?
  14. The manufacturers' instructions usually specify Armaflex on the PVC exhaust and heat tape on the condenstate drain for any sections in unconditioned spaces. There's no source stating any requirement for an insulated room.
  15. The color was intentional. Adding color to clay roofing tiles became popular in the late 19th century. To create that black color, a manganese solution was poured over the clay before firing.
  16. So are dog people, but I share in that kind of weirdliness.
  17. How about reading the manufacturer's installation instructions? In about 15 minutes, you'll know everything about how it's supposed to be installed, in every situation.
  18. Sure. I've seen many, many greywater systems designed, installed and approved. Some are considered greywater waste distribution systems and some are greywater recycling systems. Around here, County health departments typically prohibit homeowners creating their own graywater system, but many building officials overlook it in rural areas. The house I grew up in and each home I've purchased has not had the laundry discharging into the septic system.
  19. What's needed is a program that extracts from pdf. I don't know of any that will do both text and images and precisely retain the original format.
  20. Probably is. Look what the crap they have for PA requirements: "Pennsylvania Certification by the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors...and regulated by the PA Bureau of Consumer Protection."
  21. Are you standing on Humpback Rock, the greenstone outcrop?
  22. The green dot indicates a “hospital grade" electrical device. The orange triangle indicates an isolated ground (the ground of the outlet is isolated from the metal frame of the device and the metal box).
  23. It's Phlorescent Leech and Eddie - aka Mark & Howard of the Turtles.
  24. There aren't very many HIs in PA performing septic inspections. Those that do offer to do them sure aren't doing them to "FHA guidelines". Someone mentioned you have PSMA on your website. Why wouldn't you be doing the inspections according to the PSMA guidelines? Why would you consider addressing septic systems without the PSMA certification?
