allseason
Recent inspection, one of the granite countertops on a peninsula is mounted on a 12" cabinet box and has a 12" overhang. I commonly recommend support/brackets under these but there are doors under the overhang, making the choice one or the other, doors or brackets. My worst case scenario is that people will sometimes sit on the counters. General consensus please. Click to Enlarge 50.6 KB
Bill Kibbel
10" max overhang for 1.25" countertop of granite or marble. I would probably tell the folks just what you typed here.

Bill Kibbel
Bill, where'd you get that number from? It was posted here about 5 years ago. It's originally from the Marble Institute of America's MIA Dimension Stone Design Manual.

tim5055
I just had a similar countertop made. Multiple granite companies in the Norther Virginia area stated they would not go over 9" without placing a flat steel sheet between the granite and the top of the box for support. No quoted source from any of them, but they were all giving the exact same answer.
