making a data template
Michael Brown replied to John Dirks Jr's topic in Computers & Reporting Systems Forum
I like Chad's suggestion! There is also software called Inspect Express that runs in Word that does exactly what you asked, I think? This one would take a few hours to answer so I will skip to the next one for now. This is already built into Microsoft Word. Under the View Menu, click Document Map. It will show a clickable list of all the headings in your document and if you click a heading say exterior you will be moved to that part of the document. Type exterior into your document select the text and format as Heading 1. It will now show up in your document map. You could record that as a macro and create a toolbar and place the macro on the toolbar. Inside Word with the builtin Visual Basic you can create forms that are linked to a database. Then when you click exterior off the toolbar it opens a form with checkboxes and dropdowns etc. and when you click the write button the information you selected is written to the page. Maybe I missed what you were after? If not, it's already built. I could probably put together some sample code... does anyone else want to learn any of this stuff... I know work is slow right now. We don't mind. Maybe I should find some code everyone can use? Michael Brown DevWave Software Inc.

Looks pretty good. I have one suggestion though. The topic titles are all pushed together with the text from the article above. If you add some space above the titles it would look much better. I noticed the style on the headings "rss_item_title" in your page. But couldn't find the style for it on the style sheet page (styleSheets/rssStyles.css). By adding some padding or margin space you can fix that. You could add one of the following codes to your style sheet: .rss_item_title { margin-top: 20px; } or you could try: .rss_item_title { padding-top: 20px; } Michael Brown DevWave Software Inc.

It is mandatory in BC... (the whole province) and if you don't use one it affects your ability to retain or get back a security deposit. Most of the time the landlord and tenant fill it out, agree to it and sign it at the beginning and the end of the tenancy. I thought that Tesla idea of transmitting electricity through the air using the earth's own resonance with its specific vibrational frequency was very interesting and some people are still working on this. His Tesla coils powered by only a small amount of electricity can light up fluorescent tubes (with burned out cathodes) and with nothing attached to them. Another interesting read is about the Biefeld-Brown effect discovered by Thomas Townsend Brown. Old but still real interesting stuff. Michael Brown

Onions needed - Inspection software I wrote
Michael Brown replied to sepefrio's topic in Computers & Reporting Systems Forum
Hey John I didn't say anything negative about your report! [:-taped] It maybe fun to create software (the novelty does wear off) and if that is what you want to do okay... but you have a long road ahead of you. Software is not a Word template... it has features that automate the process as well as storing your comments and changes in a database. InspectExpress uses a database has a great format and integrates with Outlook for clients and scheduling. It doesn't use its own word processor because Microsoft Word has one that cannot be matched and it gets to use all of its features. It doesn't have a scheduler for the same reason... no point in spending hundreds of hours to develop some scheduler when there is already something you can integrate with that is better. Everything you are about to learn has already been done. You can customize most inspection software to change the look, fonts, cover, colors, order of items etc. However it doesn't integrate with your accounting program... but you could simply write software that creates an invoice in Microsoft Word and exports the information to your accounting program at the same time. Still some fun but not a total waste of time. Here is a link to a:Sample Report Michael Brown Devwave Software Inc. -
Not sure what browser and OS you are running but IE7 can turn on and off BHO's. For IE6 and earlier you can use BHO Daemon. Does it do that in FireFox also, that would be a good indicator if it is a BHO. If it's only in IE and not FireFox it most likely is a BHO and we can help you get rid of it. There is an Anti-Spyware tool called BHODemon that you can download from the link below: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3550.html Another one is this but it's not so user freindly, in that you can turn off stuff your not suppose to: Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-Hij ... 27353.html Give us some info maybe we can help. Hi Steven, I was just wondering why you would target people searching for "EIFS inspections staten island"? I wouldn't think many clients would search that term at all? I would think the term you want to target is "home inspection staten island" or "New York home inspection" etc. We don't have the tool anymore but I did a lot of research as we could tell how many searches were done each month for a certain terms and I never remember "EIFS inspections" ever coming up for any county? You can only target a couple of terms on a website so why waste it on something no one searches for? As for your browser hyjacking it sounds like adware in a BHO that may be installed but you would notice it on other sites as well. Michael Brown DevWave Software Inc.

I recommend that you..... vs.
Michael Brown replied to John Dirks Jr's topic in Report Writing and the Written Word
I have heard that it is a not a good idea to write this way if you are incorporated... you might want the company sued instead of you personally. Of course it won't matter if your not incorporated or don't have a LLC anyway. I was explained that We or It was better than I from that perspective. A question for the E&O experts? Michael Brown DevWave Software Inc. I'm no E&O expert, and I'm no lawyer, although I work with lawyers regularly. I just can't imagine a situation in which one loses his "corporate veil" because he wrote something like, "I saw a puddy tat," rather than, "a puddy tat was observed." In my experience, when an HI gets sued -- whether he's running a sole proprietorship, a corp or an LLC -- it's not because he chose to write in active voice. It's because he screwed up the job so egregiously that it's worth the plaintiff's time and money -- usually tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars -- to haul him into court. The notion that an HI should write in passive voice to protect his corporate/LLC status sounds like silly HI folklore to me. Not to be harsh, but it's that kind of screwy thinking that starts an HI down the big-mistake road in the first place. Imagine some poor lug standing over his checklist thinking, "Will I lose my business if I write in active voice?" Once somebody starts thinking that way, he might as well start looking for a different job. But if anybody really wants to know the legal details on this matter, he should contact a lawyer who understands the HI biz. WJid="blue"> I didn't make it up as it was being taught at a Canadian HI conference... don't want the thread to drift but as we write software I would like to get some more opinions on it? There is enough debate over the I... We... It... already but I was wondering about the legal aspect. Could it be a US/CAN difference as we only get some protection from INC in CAN. Some of the CAN orgs actually have their own E&O so I'm not sure if that is also a factor. Michael Brown DevWave Software Inc. http://www.devwave.com -

Ahh... I have to admit it's probably a bug I've known about for a while... When you click to send a PM off a profile and the persons name is split (first and last name with a space in between) it doesn't send the last part of the name through to the next page. You can still type it in if you notice. If you go to your PM Inbox it works fine but if you go through the profiles it bugs out with names that are broken. If that's how you did it Richard redo the split names... I'll fix it soon[:-weepn] Now as long as Mike doesn't turn that new monitor sideways so he can write longer posts we'll be okay! Well done Richard and all! [:-angel] Michael Brown
