  1. Sorry to hear about your mom Bill. My condolences.
  2. Best of luck Brandon. As you know it's a great part-time gig as well.
  3. Lemme translate. If someone doesn't like the smell of cowshit, covering it with pigshit will just make it worse. [:-party]
  4. Ice damming is a problem for us up North Marc in which case temperature trumps humidity (next to zero humidity in the winter anyway). Any ice damming problems Fred?
  5. Blown-in insulation would be my guess.
  6. A person I know here bought a 10,000 sf home then gave it to the local fire department and they burned it to the ground for practice. He then put up a 20,000 sf home.
  7. Poor eyesight? I know it's why I always bring my dog along (not to mention he's one hellava Steeplejack).
  8. While sediment on the bottom of an electric may not be a problem it is with a gas fired heater. The sediment acts as an insulation barrier so without full contact with the water, to carry the heat away, the bottom of the tank superheats and cracks. Boilers have the same problem.
  9. Not if the X-tank is full. You'll lift the tp/v then flash.
  10. The boiler had to be firing to have steam vapor at the tprv. You can't have steam vapor from a boiler at idle. It's most like flooded. Did you check the X-tank? A boiler should be able to heat the home without lifiting the tprv. Also, did you see if the boiler was firing with no call for heat? If you had the t/stat at 50 and the boiler was firing there is a control circuit problem.
  11. You get the most interesting homes Phillip - I want to inspect there. On second thought - not so much, I'll leave it to you. [:-crazy]
  12. Depending on the valve motor you can sometimes test them at the motor. For Barber-Coleman you short terminal 2 or 3 to the casing to get the motor to drive CW or CCW.
  13. Me too. On a side bar; I never test a system however I always advise the client to observe the spray pattern. Quite often I see them spraying up against the brickwork of the home.
  14. The valve could have leaked, sometime in the past, and had been replaced/rebuilt but the valve motor was reused which is OK. We use to do this all the time. Was there water in the system Mike? Were you able to operate each zone motor?
  15. I've a few thoughts but am more interested in what you think makes it dangerous Reuben.
  16. No Tom, did not. I did however recommend that a siding guy unzips some of the siding on this wall a takes a look-see at what's going on.
  17. Sorry for not getting back sooner - was out of town with limited net access. The stains/drip marks went the entire lenght of the wall which was apporx. 40 feet or so. No ac/line set located on this side of the home.
  18. How so? The initial charging of a new lead-acid battery results in the off-gassing of hydrogen gas. Excessive discharging results in the off-gassing of oxygen. Excessive charging/discharging or excessive charge/discharge rates can result in the need to replace lost water, but the H2SO4 never leaves the solution...unless it spills or leaks out. This 'fuzzy black' is a mystery! Marc Lead-acid batteries will give off hydrogen sulfide gas when charging if their plates are damaged or if their water level is low. Try it. How would you test for the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas Jim?
  19. Along one wall you can see water stains coming out where the vinyl siding is. On the inside of this wall are two bedrooms and one bath with tub/shower. Any thoughts on cause? Click to Enlarge 35.22 KB
  20. I'd be more concerned with improper draft due to how the winds flow in that area. I can see strange eddy currents happening / back-drafting.
  21. That's what you call a "honk & wave".
  22. No, it is possible to have more than one cap ie a/c systems.
