hausdok Posted July 9, 2010 Report Share Posted July 9, 2010 I don't need a UV flashlight to find rodents; they leave urine spots, droppings, torn insulation and compacted insulation wherever they go and I'm typically tipped off to their presence by the snap traps, glue traps or bait stations spread around. Mold? It's in 100% of the air we breath 24/7/365. Why would I be looking for it with a UV light? If it's accumulated to the point where I can see it, because of poor ventilation or water intrusion or leaking fixtures or something like that, I'm going to report the cause and tell folks that if they're worried about the mold bogeyman to hire a good indoor air quality firm with a real scientist on staff and avoid any home inspector brandishing an air pump or tape strips, because all the home inspector will do is take their money to tell them what they already know - that there's mold in the air and on surfaces in the house. IMO, only a real mold specialist such as a mycologist or an industrial hygeinist should be dealing with mold issues. Whenever I see something that I think might require a pro, I recommend folks contact Dr. Phallah over at IDEHL (He's moderator of our mold forum here.) and let him tell them whether they need to be nervous about mold or not; and, if so, what to do about it. kurt Posted July 9, 2010 Report Share Posted July 9, 2010 Same boat here. Rodents leave rodent, turds, trails, and messes. Mold stinks, and it's always present if there's moisture. If I can smell it or see it, I don't need any further confirmation. I'd get a good moisture meter and use it before I'd use a UV light for anything, although, it might be good to have for looking at my old Jimi Hendrix poster.......... My wife was with me and I just had to show it to her in our hotel room. The room looked like it had been painted with glow in the dark paint by Peter Max! Needless to say she was not happy with what showed up with the light and the next few days were not as fun as the first for her. What amazed me were the spots on the ceiling.... They don't wash the bedspreads every time a guest checks out. In the docu-whatever I saw, the hotel manager's reasoning was cost, obviously, but also that guests were supposed to know that the spread should be turned down to the end of the bed rather than actually being used. At the end, they made one quite little statement. " As gross is this was, we could find no documented history of anyone catching anything from the bodily fluids stains in a hotel room. Its a handy tool to help close the deal, especially in commercial establishments. On the technical side, our technicians don't need them. They know how to track and trap rodents.
