Trent Tarter
There are several free "roof pitch" apps out there. I have one on my phone, comes in handy when needing to check roof pitch. Click to Enlarge 52.87 KB
Marc
Good tip! Works great. Marc
Jim Katen
I've found that it works great when I can actually place the phone on the roof or when I can view the rake dead-on. A lot of people try to use this app to measure the angle of the roof from the ground. That introduces errors and doesn't work.
Jim Katen
And while you're up there, consider this app: https://www.fallsafetyapp.com/
inspector57
Why didn't I think of the fall safety app? Handy tool. Anybody using it?
kurt
I love my phone clinometer app. Works great. That said, when it comes to roof pitch, I usually just make an educated guess based on dimensional observations.
Marc
... A lot of people try to use this app to measure the angle of the roof from the ground. That introduces errors and doesn't work. I think the errors are too small to be significant when the phone is held within the same place plane as the corners of the roof surface. My hip roof is 6/12 and my reading, with the three corners in the same plane as the phone, hovered between 5.9 and 6.1 Marc
Rob Amaral
I'm using that app... it's pretty good..
John Dirks Jr
I've found that it works great when I can actually place the phone on the roof or when I can view the rake dead-on. A lot of people try to use this app to measure the angle of the roof from the ground. That introduces errors and doesn't work. Also, the shingles on the roof can pitch back as they overlay each course. So, you should lay a straight edge over several courses and put the measuring device on that. A smart phone alone is too short for that.
