  1. I've seen that setup on sailboats before.
  2. There's gotta be some reason! I would have guessed lead service entry pipe...but maybe I'm just projecting.[]
  3. Bafoonery! If the damn thing was leaking they wouldn't need an HI to tell 'em. They could just look up.
  4. I've made recommendations before that I cannot support with any written code. My favorite is the receptacle mounted to the bottom of the kitchen sink base cabinet. It's permitted but stupid and water always ends up there, either from a leak or dripping handsprayer or stored cleaning product containers that leak. Not all of the childproofing stuff is in the code books. Actually most of it isn't. I would do the same as you on this one Jerry.
  5. I agree with Jim
  6. Standard Mod Bit sheets are manufactured by pulling scrims of fiberglass and/or polyester mats through molten bitumen, coating the scrim with the bitumen. After it cools it is trimmed to the manufacturers’ thickness specifications. Typical overall thickness is 3/16â€
  7. From the pics all I could say is: 1) Over torched at the seams. Don't really want to see more than 1/4" of bleed out. 2) No perimeter edge metal. This roof will blow off or up enough to allow water entry. 1+2 = Amateur work. I'm sure I could find more if I could walk on it. Call a professional to fix or replace it.

  9. I see cages all the time on the south and west side. I don't get many jobs in those 'hoods, but that doesn't surprise me one bit.
  10. I'm not sure from your photos that the crack has anything to do with the deck/porch or how it is connected. I would be looking at foundation settlement or moisture entry from the joints on the window sill. I don't see any way those joists would still be horizontal if they were not passing through the brick veneer wall.
  11. Considering how easy it is to steal one of these, I actually have wondered why I don't see something like this more often.
  12. That's what she said
  13. That's a tissue dispenser.
  14. No question about it, that's EPDM.
  15. From their website: Once you link up your US bank account, Square will automatically initiate a payout to your bank account at the end of every business day. If you are a new user to Square and have already received $1,000 during the last seven days, Square will defer initiating the amount in excess of $1,000 for 30 days. Payouts to your bank account will normally register in your account within 1-2 business days. Plan on transacting more then $1,000 regularly? No problem! We'll periodically look at your account and increase this automatically without additional user input needed. There are a few factors we look at when increasing your deposit amount, including refunds, chargebacks, and whether or not the majority of your transactions are accepted with your card reader. We always recommend that you use your reader as much as possible; those transactions are more secure for everyone involved. Please note that we're more likely to automatically approve users that do this.
  16. I read that tht part about holding the excess over 1,000.00 which turns me off a bit. While it doesn't happen often, that I collect 1,000.00 in 7 days via cc, it has happened a few times in the past. Yea, apparently they do that when you're a new customer, but they say they adjust that amount after you have some processing history with them.
  17. I found this one last year. Enjoy! Click to Enlarge 37.44 KB
  18. Well, the swiper device arrived today and I made 2 test transactions. One through the swiper and a second one that I keyed in. Both were very simple and worked perfectly, though the swipe was obviously easier.
  19. I also signed up for Square after I saw it on another forum. Got an email this am letting me know that the device has shipped and I should have it in a few days. I haven't accepted credit cards for about 2 years now and I don't think I've lost any business from it, but there have been a few hurdles with out-of-town clients and people forgetting to bring their checkbook to the inspection. I was looking for a service, like Square, that only charges a processing fee. I do pass that fee along to my clients and have had no problems with doing that. I guess Marc won't hire me though []
  20. We're home inspectors, not magicians or thieves. Come on, give us a break!
  21. Honestly Kurt, that has not been my experience. I only get bad reception in my home. My workaround is to set up my home landline # as the "call forward" #. When my cell rings while I'm at home, I hit the "Decline Call" button on the phone and it gets forwarded to my landline. It's really the only reason I still have a landline. I got full signal strength nearly everywhere else. I don't have any horses in this race, so I'm not trying to defend AT&T, it's just that my personal experiences and the information I've collected, points towards hardware issues.
  22. I’m on AT&T and I don’t have an IPhone. I think the service has been fine, although I don’t get very good reception in my home with my current phone (HTC Tilt2). I had great reception in my home with my last AT&T Motorola smartphone. Based on this information, it’s pretty clear to me that this is a phone issue. I’ve spent some time at XDA Developers Forum (Ultra Cell Phone Geeks) searching their database, and concluding that I would need to reflash my Radio Rom if I want to improve reception. I’m not gonna do that since it’s a bit risky and you could “Brickâ€
  23. As a general rule of thumb (and best practice), standing water should drain/dry within 48 hours after a rain. There are several roof systems (some coal tar pitch systems, EPDM and other single-ply systems) that can withstand standing water indefinetly and remain watertight. There are even inverted sloped roof structures that are designed to hold water to help cool the building, although they are few and far between. It's usually fairly obvious if a roof structure was designed this way. Large amounts of standing water on a roof that was clearly not designed as an inverted slope, can be a weight issue. Obviously I have no abilty to calculate roof load capacity, so on a roof that does not appear to have been designed to hold water but is holding substancile amounts, I would call it out for further evaluation by a structural engineer reguardless of the roof system or its condition.
  24. Battery life has been great so far. I got the flashlight in mid December and 1 set of fully charged batteries (Powerex 2700 mAh) lasted through the month. Granted it was a slow and partial month, but still much better battery life than I expected.
  25. I did the same with slightly better results. 100% exhaust, 10% horse power. I'd rather be watching football (Go Bears!).
