  1. So, why is it so important to begin with? What's the difference if the underlayment is there or not? It seemed to work out ok without it in snow country. For that matter, why after a hundred or so years without the newfangled Ice and Water, is that suddenly an absolute must have?
  2. I drive by a house every day of the week with a roof that was installed exactly like that, more than twentyfive years ago. It's starting to show it's age, but still looks fine. When my friend (the roofer) and I did it, I told him he was out of his mind and we were going to be back there every year to fix it. Never once got a call.
  3. Hi, I guess if I were to pay that kind of money for engineered flooring, I'd want it installed correctly. I don't care if they're standing behind it or not. Hand scraped plywood flooring? Who does that? The last thing I hand scraped, was the last thing I'll ever hand scrape. Damn.
  4. Who reports what and how they defer whatever to whomever is nowhere near as important as cutting the heads off of snakes like that guy and the rest like him. Once that nonsense is stopped and the hiring decision is put in the hands of the consumer without the influence of the person who stands to lose the most as a result of a home inspection, the playing field will level itself. Just like it does in any other occupation. If you're the most knowlegable inspector who ever walked the face of the earth, and you know every answer to correcting every defect you ever see, it means nothing if you're sitting home because a used lumber peddler is afraid of you and bad mouthing you to perspective clients. The bottom line here, is that every time one of these pigs attempts to foist this crap, they should be challenged, shut down, and exposed for who they are. I'd say focusing on that part of this thread should be the first consideration. Thanks again to Mike for posting his comment. Inspectors as a group, should learn to focus on more of that kind of behavoir. That's the kind of thing the public needs to made aware of. They'll figure out who's good and who isn't. Just like we all do when we hire others.
  5. Just went back and read the latest contribution. Well done, sir.
  6. Marc, I just blew this pic up to see the cut better. It looks like the pebble is on a sheet of 1/8 inch plywood, on 1/2 cement board. Is that the same as what you're talking about?
  7. I feel a little stupid for not paying more attention to the substrate, but I thought for sure it was a durock type of sheet good under it. It looks like it was cut with a circular saw. Hmm. I was trying to remember if I'd ever seen it on one the admin buildings at one of the nuke plants. Those plants supplied a lot of material to the construcion workers homes when they built.[]
  8. Did you guys read the comments posted to that article? [:-thumbu]

  11. Oh! I don't think so, chief.
  12. We had a little piece of that here too. Took this Tuesday evening with a new Lumix. You guys scared me away from the W90. This cell was spinning so hard and moving so fast, I thought for sure I was going to get a water spout shot out of it. It made land within 30 seconds of the second shot. Never funneled. WHY?

Who the hell's ever going to bother looking in there?
  16. Yup. And the Greeks ended up taking the rap for that too!
  17. How do you know that? No one should possess that much information about a door. : ) John, The guy walked in my door, looked at my countertop and said something like, "That's a Wilsonart high definition laminate in one of the deep star patterns." He's a walking parts catalog. Didn't get the color though, did ya? It's Fossil, Tom. Deep star Fossil.
  18. That looks like a Therma-tru fiberglass door to me. If it is, I believe the core is a high density foam
  19. Very good point.[:-thumbu]

  22. Bad day, Gary? I don't know the meaning of a bad day. LOL! Ya think that was a little too much?
  23. It is a standing policy of Harbor Light Inspection Services Company that we do not do re-inspects after the repairs have been completed. I explained this to John and your realtor, and will further explain it to your not paying attention the first time, ignorant, knuckle headed, stubborn, window licking, three fries short of a happy meal having ass, now.
  24. Ian, I think everyone of these men made a great point based on their experience. I've also had some experience with a broker who had an inspector's ad on their folder. There was a good reason for it being there. I was told why in private, by two of the realtors. I also busted this broker three times, telling clients they shouldn't hire me. Luckily for me, these folks had called me on their own and were warned by me ahead of time, that this might happen. All three hired me. The broker was pissed. So naturally, because of this, in my experience, this is nothing less than a pure conflict of interest. However, given the opportunity you have for exposure to a captive audience in the size of the market you're in, I'm not so sure I'd pass that up for the sake of throwing more money at a website. In my opinion, a website is more of a chance happening of being found and followed up on than having a shot at every single deal that comes through their door. Simply because, your ad is right in front of the buyer at all times. Even if they hate you for doing your job, your ad will still be in front of folks on their folder. Kind of hard for them to bad mouth a guy who's on their paper work, huh?
  25. Even if I see safety glass, I write something like this. The (your window here) windows are very close to the floor. I strongly recommend some type of safety barrier of a material that could be easily breached by a fire fighter, be installed to prevent a child from falling into or out of these windows.
