  1. Have it tested? Ground water is not treated.[:-banghea
  2. When I see aroma candles lit, cookies/brownies baking, or any"covering" smell,I start looking(smelling) for the problem. Dog/cat dishes get special attention. Evidence of Kilz and fresh paint. You can not smell CLEAN! "the nose knows"[:-banghea
  3. Rob----You forgot to mention West Roxbury or Needham on the Charles. Some of us can not sleep soundly without a mountain nearby. I have no fear of crossing the "M R Bridge".[8D]
  4. Not this year. Worth the effort.[:-banghea
  5. Got 5 red squirrels over the course of 4 days with "glue traps". Only way to go. Set up a snap trap with peanut butter and the glue traps surrounding it. Had to administer a sharp hammer blow to the twitching squirrel. Picked it up with a long needle nose--into a plastic bag-- off to the Bridgton dump. Sweet [8D]
  6. Up in the great State of Mass. we have underground sprinkler systems on town water. I go thru a speech about "Fall procedure" then "Spring turnon and orientation of nozzles". Questions are answered about the green box cover and the piping next to the foundation. Inside the building there is an electric monitoring box with the installers name. "Call them and make sure you are on their maintenance tour" I get the Realtor involved in a discussion about 'water bans' in the town. [:-banghea
  7. Anything wrong with being a cheap-ass DIYer ? Good stuff -bot cheep- put on rite! Whats not to like?[:-banghea
  8. Did he get out of the car?
  9. This olde phart can remember: one phone,no dial-on a table in the hallway between floors. Two families shared. Maybe got one call per day. No TV. One big fancy radio in the parlor per floor. Shoveling coal from the chute/bin to the massive steam boiler. I'm not sure "those were the good old days"!
  10. Filling up the jetted tub will tell a few things: How long will the hot water last? Is it enough hot water? Does it work as designed? Check water pressure? Temperature? Does the water drain out? Slow? Fast? Noisy? Always recommend disinfecting. See front pages of tub manual for procedure and timing. 100% of the water does not drain out--always some left over for the next bath!! Yuckoh! Hint: Always fill tub to cover the jets.[:-party]
  11. Reuben..The Northern New England States ASHI group does that every year. The comments are excellent--Learn a lot about other HIs techniques, reasonings, and opinions. Sometimes it ends up in a shouting match. HIs are not created equal!!! Trying to force a report from guys who use "different but equal" software is a real circus. Still worth the time and money and much anticipated by this HI.[8D]
  12. Jack Ahern will be there. Driving in from Boston. Will eventually end up in Ft Myers for a lot of golf, Guinness and hot tub.[8D][:-party]
  13. Back in the day, I played 2nd bottle in the Drum Corps --all over the country. Not everyone appreciated the art form. Its quite a feat to have that many people show up with 'tuned up' bottles. Can you understand the work that goes into making music out of bottles or sticks or trash cans or what. The bands uniforms are very kewl. Some musicians are very comical.[8D]
  14. This inspector will open/operate/shut off anything the owner is expected to handle. If you need a license to install/repair/replace---I'm out of it. Just visual!!! [:-banghea
  15. Any of you Wafarin (blood thinner) takers. Shorts are out! One good scratch from landscaping or undriven nails- cellars/attics will cause a time consuming disruption. Freaks out the client! Carry my stuff in a fisherman vest, cargo pants and/or "job boss" bucket. I do not scratch up 'priceless' antiques or walls with a tool belt. Camera and flashlight a hung around my neck. Tucked into my highpockets when not needed.[:-banghea
  16. Deck in Burlington,Ma. fell off of a house. Rotted wood-six people hurt. Gathered after a funeral. No other HI information available.[:-banghea
  17. Last inspection in July. 142F digital --attic in Needham, Ma. Older house--no visible vents in roof.[:-banghea
  18. Telesteps work for me. Don't climb roofs. " My roof didn't leak until you walked on it"[:-banghea
  19. I watch Mike's show.I too have a problem with his trashing the home inspector profession. He does spend some time "beating up the idiot homeowners" for allowing? shoddy work. Most everybody in this business could find the problems, if they would be allowed to and paid for some destructive testing. Home inspectors do a visual inspection! How come there is never a ---cost to repair the damage??? The magic of television transforms a unprofessional hack job to a nice renovation. Never a cost to do this!!! We never see the home owners weeping over their checkbook. My 2 cents. [:-banghea[:-banghea
  20. Outfitted my Maine house with Nat Gas appliances (modified per instructions). Purchased the stuff in Mass. Modified in Maine. Works great. (Sharpie fine point) conv.date written on/near appliance. Boston Plumbing Inspector eyeballed arrangement-----OK! Business is sloooooooooooooooooow![:-party]
  21. About 10 years ago, I inspected a 1700s house in Salem, Ma. Had a strange door and hallway??? Owner said it was dug out for the "underground railroad". Opened up across the street. I was not interested in exploring! Attic had some very strange support structure---like an upside down wooden ship. Kewl. For our H I brethern below the Mason/Dixon line, the railroad was used to conceal the passage of slaves. AKA contraband. During the conflict known by some as "Southern Defiance" or "Northern Aggression", Massachusetts was on the railroad to Canada. Come to think of it---Massachusetts always seems to be in the front/middle of historical stuff since 1620. Really kewl place to live.[8D]
  22. Jung and Mike************ almost impossible to do anything for 30 years. Congratulations and go for another 30 [:-party]
  23. Spent time in Fort Myers playing golf etc. One rainy day we(brother and myself) tried to solve a ineffective dryer. For 15 years it has been exhausting?? thru the roof vent. We pulled the dryer out of its space. Took off the metal venting. Shoved a "roto rooter type brush" up the remainig vent. It got stuck--we ended up removing the remaining vent to retrieve the brush. We were able to clean the metal pipe. Ended up with a grocery bag full of lint. Let me repeat that!! a friggin grocery bag full of very flamable lint. We should know better!! Dryer works great now. Cleaning dryer vents is now a strong recommendation to all my clients.[:-banghea
  24. My hair hurts. Jeese[:-banghea
  25. Quit in1978. New child coming==new house bought. My kids never saw me light up anything. It is not easy. My wife put up with it for a while(2/3 packs a day). It was my decision.[:-banghea
