Phillip
From what I can tell from the photo it is surface rust, so priming and painting it would be what I would recommend be done and have it replaced when the roof is replaced
AHI in AR
I think I'd favor an aluminized peel and stick material to cover it -- tucked as far under the bottom of the shingles as is possible.
Jim Katen
Would the best maintenence for this valley flashing be prime and paint? Personally, I wouldn't do a thing to it. That metal will still be fine long after the shingles are toast. - Jim Katen, Oregon

Tom Raymond
Do you have an establishing shot? Looking at that confluence/convergence/conflagration is making my head spin.[:-hypnoti Tom
Mike Lamb
What is causing the staining on the shingles above the flashing? Click to Enlarge 41.9 KB Click to Enlarge 64.32 KB Thanks for the comments. There was a downspout above the metal flashing but the staining is mostly from black algae. There were no stains at all on the south side of the roof. 15 year old roof. This is also an example where I think the dormer valleys should have been cut first even though the dormer has a steeper pitch. This was discussed in another thread recently. The 15 year old 3 tabs on my house are way worse than those. Tom
hausdok
What is causing the staining on the shingles above the flashing? The oxalic acid secreted by the algae. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
kurt
On occasion, Mike secretes oxalic acid. It's why his T shirts are stained brown.

Nah, that's not from oxalic acid; that's from when I find myself in a crawlspace and the IBS kicks in and there's no toilet paper handy. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!
