  1. In those older homes, I usually try to get a look at the end of the wires in the neutral terminal bar to see if I can detect this along with examining the sheathing on any visible wire, though it's not always visible. May not always work, but it gives me a shot. I've found it several times around here.
  2. I agree that "Peckish" is priceless. Laughed my ass off on that one. The important part is that we discuss and disagree and learn. There will always be those who lurk and learn. Who knows why. I don't pretend to. But I'm sure they are learning. That's the most important part.
  3. Kevin: Thanks for rocking the boat. You'll never know it, but it'll help a lot of the lurkers learn something they didn't know and were afraid to ask for one reason or another. Too bad more didn't do it. These are the kind of discussion we all learn from for FREE!
  4. Hmm, an August post finally elicits an answer or two!!
  5. Gotta love that Vista Snipping Tool. Image Insert: 76.18 KB
  6. Not even a pardon the pun? How rude!
  7. Well, Mike, thanks for your confirmation but I couldn't wait three months to deliver the report. I just went with the first four and five and told em to have a pest control guy look at it.
  8. Well, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Turned out I didn't need to do any calculating at all. I like that.
  9. Well, I ain't REALLY interested. Got my own doom and gloom to deal with! I ain't REALLY got the time. I've got a lot of studying to do for a test I have to take tonight. BUT YOU KNOW, I enjoy your dang writing so much that I did just that and more than one article popped up. Well, I just had to read several of them. I just couldn't resist. Guess I'm easily distracted. That's probably what I was doing here anyway when I should have been studying. I appreciate the break, the good humor of your old articles, and thank you much. Now I really got to get back to studying. Anybody know an easy way to calculate the Natural Air Changes per Hour without all that algebra stuff? Or do I. There's a few more threads here I haven't read recently.
  10. SAD, Walter, SAD. Must have gotten your circadian rhythm out of balance. Perhaps you need a light box for the season. Or if it's real bad, see a doctor. You're not the only one that gets gloomy in the winter.
  11. I just hate the term "further evaluation" because I think it makes me look like a moron that doesn't know anything! I may tell em that, but I refuse to use that terminology. I got tired of writing "have a qualified licensed ______ contractor..." in 30 different places. I tell them (and put it early in the report) : As I don't know the qualifications of the seller or the buyer to conduct repairs, I always recommend that you consult a qualified licensed professional in the appropriate trade to determine all needed repairs and best repair method, to estimate costs and to perform all repairs deemed necessary. That's what I mean when I write "Repair as necessary", "Fix it" or ANY other terms implying the need for repair / replacement. You need to decide for yourself if you or the seller's qualifications, experience and knowledge would allow the repair to be made without using a qualified licensed trade professional. === From there on, it's "Fix it", etc.
  12. Mike, do you know the source of the "1000 square feet of uncovered soil evaporates about 11 gallons into the air every 24 hours". I know I've seen it before but couldn't locate it recently while searching for it?
  13. 34 years old. Dead from the stampede? http://www.newsday.com/news/local/nassa ... 7903.story
  14. Phillip, No visible electrical disconnect. By the way, were you really out inspecting a house a 1:14 AM, November 27, 2008 (this morning)??????
  15. Plumber just screwed up his connections. Had one a week or two ago where the bathroom sink had cold water from both sides but the exterior faucet just outside the bathroom had hot water. Go figure. Sometimes stuff happens. Plumber needs to come back and fix his goof/
  16. See clarifications in original post.
  17. I don't want to prejudice you with my opinion so I'll just post the pictures and see what y'all think. This is the back of the 58 year old brick veneer house. Image Insert: 149.77 KB Water is wicking up from the sill plate into the rim joist area all along the back wall. The sill plate is above the basement garage doors. The sill plate is NOT below ground level. No "obvious" source of water in the rim joist area. No pipes, etc. Moisture meter said it was dry at time of inspection but who can remember the last time we had any decent rain around here. Image Insert: 143.87 KB
  18. Are you feeling a tug on your leg, Dave? You should be!
  19. Now Chad, you know that's not true. They don't feel a bit guilty!
  20. Not all inspectors have had such positive experiences with them! http://www.inspectionnews.net/home_insp ... steps.html http://www.inspectionnews.net/home_insp ... apsed.html http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/sear ... earch.y=14 To each their own.
  21. Couldn't get the PDF to download other than page 1. Two different Readers Digest takes on it. From the DOJ From NAR I think I'll take the DOJ version. The NAR version just spins it so that NAR looks good (IF that's all you read!) -

  23. Snuck one in there while I was replying. Split your document into two columns: Put the links in the left column!
  24. What version of Word are you using? I think you're on the right track with bookmarks and hyperlinks but don't know how you'll get the sidebar to float thru the document with you. Guess you could copy it to each page. I venture what you're trying to do is kinda what HomeGauge (and probably several others) already does. (See the orange bar at left of picture) Image Insert: 224.58 KB I know it feels good to write your own, but perhaps you'd be better off, business wise, spending your time marketing your business instead of writing software that's already been done?? Reinventing the wheel so to speak.
