New breed of inspector goes after energy leaks
Erby replied to Chad Fabry's topic in News Around The Net
I think it's a little more than poof. Certainly more than the one day wonder mold course I went to! Learned just enough there to know I didn't want anything to do with it. -
So I used the "XML/RSS" link code for the one that says "TIJ News & Articles Forums". All the others said "Electrical Forum" when I moused over them. Think I got it: http://www.kreia.org/RSSNewsFeedsforIns ... fault.aspx Let me know if you want me to change anything about it. Here's the code I used: Download Attachment: RSS.txt 707 Bytes Thanks for letting me use it. Hope it helps educate some around here.

Mike & Mike: What would you think if I put that IJ RSS Feed on the Kentucky Real Estate Inspectors Association website? www.kreia.org

Inspecting Wall Paper and What's Hidden Behind
Erby replied to Chad Fabry's topic in News Around The Net
Back on track is simple. Pay attention to what your customer is asking questions about. They'll save your ass and be happy at the same time. -
Other than good common sense!

Remember that the IRC is a "Bare minimum legal standard". That doesn't always make it right or even a good idea. I'd just go with manufacturer's instructions for the shingles trumping the IRC.

Distorted vinyl siding from window reflection
Erby replied to Martin Holladay's topic in Exteriors Forum
I've seen quite a bit of melted siding due to window reflection but today I actually got to see the reflected light. The siding temperature at the light spot was about 115 degrees with the rest of it at about 100 degrees. The outside temperature was about 58 degrees at the time. It was a cool afternoon but the wall was facing directly west into the sun, i.e, the sun was almost directly to the left of the house as seen from the first picture. The sliding glass door was on the south wall of the house. I doubt that it was doing much melting today but it was easy to see how the reflected light moving across the wall at just the right angle would cause it during higher temperature periods. When I slid the screen part of the door open to cover the reflecting glass, the bright light went completely away. When I moved the screen out of the way, the light came back. Image Insert: 147.44 KB Image Insert: 135.03 KB Image Insert: 23.02 KB I won't say much here about the rest of the crappy installation of the siding. It's obvious! - -
On those where the coils is right next to the filter, I just slip my little old Sony Cybershot thru the filter slot and shoot a few pictures of the coil. Gives a good idea of it's condition. Don't work for beans on an A-coil over a gas furnace though. Too many realtors around here tell the seller to ensure that they change the filter because the inspector will look at it to see what condition it's in. I tend to ignore the filter and dig deeper.

Mike, If you just carried your dirty Fruits in the pocket of your crawl space coveralls, you wouldn't have that problem. I never use the pair I'm wearing. I carry spares. Image Insert: 135.07 KB Image Insert: 105.48 KB -

We're getting that training here. (Well, for those who were smart enough to take advantage of it.) Kentucky Meth Lab Awareness & Safety See Track 2 - 9:00 AM. Bottom line seems to be know how to recognize it. If you recognize it - get your ass out. Kentucky Meth Lab Cleanup Information -

From the OP: I'd still bet on a hokey attempt at a radon system.
-
I'm aghast! BUT, don't the newer furnaces have flue condensate drains for just this purpose. Or is the flue condensate drain there for another purpose??
-
Colorado radon mitigation system?? I hear there's a bit of radon around there. -

chimney issues
Erby replied to John Dirks Jr's topic in Fireplaces, Chimneys & Wood Burning Appliances
It must be late. I read Chad's statement as "they didn't use a bone breaker between the flue and crown" and moved on to the next thread. Then, and only then, did it hit me that the statement didn't make a damn bit of sense and had to come back and see what he really said. -
I started to steal (thread drift) another thread in response to something Walter had to say but thought it'd be better to start a new one in the right area. If you want to be lonely and get fewer calls w/ questions about your report from buyers, sellers, real estaters, electricians, plumbers etc. FOLLOW Walter's advise. Since I started including sources (several years ago), it's no longer an argument between the other person's opinion and my opinion. The other person can argue all they want that the manufacturer's instructions, CPSC, gas company, electric company, etc are wrong, but they can't argue with ME about it. I like getting fewer calls w/ questions about my report. -

Yup. ======== Contact one or both of the two privately-run national radon programs (listed below alphabetically) who are offering proficiency listing/accreditation/certification in radon testing and mitigation. EPA closed their radon proficiency program in October of 1998. Scott: NRSB (National Radon Safety Board) still has their own certification separate from NEHA-AARST. Michael: See the bold part below. From: http://www.epa.gov/radon/radontest.html ============== Please Note: EPA-issued Radon Measurement (RMP) and Mitigation (RCP) photo-identification cards, ANY item with EPA's logo or name, listing letters and identification numbers have not been valid since EPA closed its proficiency program in October 1998. Consequently, persons and companies should not represent themselves, their products or their services as "EPA Listed" or "EPA Approved" or "Meets EPA Requirements" or otherwise imply an EPA sanction. Consumers are encouraged to contact their State radon office (see our state contact list at www.epa.gov/iaq/whereyoulive.html just click on your state) for additional information or if you have a complaint/question. After the close of EPA's National Radon Proficiency Program (RPP) in 1998, there were requests that EPA offer some form of recognition of the two existing non-Federal radon proficiency programs. EPA offered a one-time acknowledgment to both of the existing non-Federal national radon proficiency programs (The National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) and The National Environmental Health Association's (NEHA) National Radon Proficiency Program). This official acknowledgement ran through March 30, 2001 to December 31, 2002. EPA continues to encourage States, industry and consumers to work together to identify those elements that would improve non-Federal radon proficiency programs and go beyond EPA's former voluntary RPP. These improved elements should then be adopted as standards of practice. We continue to make available some of the background materials that were part of the EPA's former National Radon Proficiency Program (RPP), specifically: the old RPP Handbook (PDF, 131 pp, 1.2MB) Quality Assurance Document (PDF, 124 pp, 398KB) device protocols (HTML version) and Home Protocols (PDF, 47 pp, 720KB) Descriptions of each of the 15 radon measurement methods (HTML version) that have been identified by the U.S. EPA and were used in EPA's former RPP. The descriptions are divided into methods appropriate for measuring radon gas and radon decay products See also our other radon publications If you have further questions about Radon, please call your State Radon Contact (just click on your state) or the National Radon Information Line at: ========================== The documents above are actual links when you go to the EPA Radon site linked above.

I always enjoyed your Ace Weekly column, Walter. Too bad it went away. Imagine, you got paid to write stuff like that.

Given the look of it I'd guess that it's a temperature sensor of some sort for a control purpose, but danged if I know why. Old or newer unit.

As IR Prices Come Down Energy Audits See Uptick
Erby replied to hausdok's topic in InfraredThermography
Quite a few of the builders around here are getting on the green wagon seeking the tax credits. I recently started taking a class (16 weeks on Tuesday nights) thru the University on energy essentials. Hey, it was FREE (grant funded) Education never hurts. Only bad thing is they've got some of that funky stuff called "algebra" in the course. I HATE ALGEBRA!! Some of the local utility cooperatives have a bunch of guys in the class. The electric cooperative does it free for their members. Some builders are also there along with renovators. They are hunting the tax credits and want to learn how to get them. A little bit more involved than I thought it would be. I guess you "could" do it on the cheap. Heck, I know several home inspectors doing it on the cheap. Why should energy audits be any different? Kind of a "get what you pay for" scenario. - -

Tablet PC Users - which to buy?
Erby replied to CheckItOut's topic in Computers & Reporting Systems Forum
HP tx2525nr Tablet PC for $899.00 at Best Buy. Runs Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit on 3 GB RAM. Sooner or later you're gonna get stuck with Vista. Might as well get there now. Course there are a couple of dinosaurs still running on DOS. While it's a pain in the ass learning the new operating system, I can see the promise in it. Good luck with whatever your choice.
