Guess I'll need to come back and check this later as I'm in the same area and find the same situation a time or two.
  2. He's frigging got us playing Columbo! I hate Columbo! Given Mike took my first guess, I'd go with a cross connection somewhere.
  3. I was talking to an older (80+) gentleman the other day over coffee at the liar's table at the local coffee shop. The topic came around to knob & tube wiring and he mentioned something I've never heard of before. He said that his first house electricity was DC current, and old Delco system. Said it was the first system, BEFORE knob and tube. Anybody ever heard of this type of system. Google only talks about DC current in and Delco stuff in cars, boats, etc.
  4. For some strange reason, I've found that I'm almost always interested in what ALL the members of this board have to say about stuff. Thanks for the information.
  5. Well, there's a bunch of "anyones" here. Fortunately, there's also a "few" to give us all something to talk about. Thanks for being one of the "few". Personally, I've decided to be an inspector instead of a software developer. What program is this wonderful all in one thing that you're using to develop this?
  6. Jim. But, is it going to harm the wire any??
  7. Takes about 10 seconds to change column headers in HomeGauge, BUT once I've settled on which ones to use, why would I change them?
  8. It's a mess alright. NO ventilation, poor grading, defective sump pump, minimal vapor barrier. Caoimhín, while your comment$ are$ensitive and $ignificant, it $eems to u$ that your S key i$ broken. I a$$ure you that there i$ indeed, lot$ of dampne$$. Hopefully, I've educated my client$ about the $ignificance enough to keep them from being $uckered.
  9. I seem to remember something about grounds being disconnected and chemicals as causes for blackened ground wire in the panels. Anyone want to refresh my memory with details worthy of report inclusion? Details. House is unoccupied. Crawl space is VERY wet. Electrical panel is in laundry room. Trap door for crawl space is also in laundry room with open dryer vent pipe hole thru floor. Most of the ground wires were BLACK. Sump pump wasn't operating until it was turned on at the breaker. Smelling the water at the sump pump discharge was kinda like that rotten egg odor we used to get in chemistry lab. Wasn't that sulphur? (Didn't smell it in the crawl space because of the mask). 10. Just some pretty stuff I ran into in the morning inspection's crawlspace. Image Insert: 73.26 KB Image Insert: 46.18 KB Crawlspace was a little damp! [:-crazy] [:-crazy] [:-crazy]
  11. Well, at least you weren't in one of the dives. They don't have self flushing.
  12. I've seen several "dug out" basements around here. Stacked stone foundations reinforced. Thought I had a picture of the interior of this one I looked at earlier this week. They even added a window or two. House on the right. Dug out the about two thirds of the right half of the crawl space. Image Insert: 80.28 KB See it back past the water heater. Image Insert: 52.04 KB Yeah, it's cracked a bit but that's likely because of the downspout dumping water right at the rear corner. Rest of the crawl space was like this. 13. If he doesn't reinforce that dirt, he's going to end up with less work space.
  14. They're very common around here outside the city. I have one. About 30 inches in diameter, 12 feet deep with a grinder pump in the bottom. Most common failure is in the electrical contactors at the control panel. At one point I had a bunch of info on it but can't find it now and danged if I remember the name. Pretty painless. Just kinda sits there and does it's thing.
  15. Why'd they terminate. Won't the seller replace it one way or the other? Or did they just postpone until it was replaced.
  16. Find a 203(k) guy here. Select your state or state and city. https://entp.hud.gov/idapp/html/f17cnsltdata.cfm
  17. Why do you even need subheadings? AIR CONDITIONING: Observation I found this. Recommendation You should do this. Comment Here's some other stuff I want you to know. Why not just put them together in a paragraph. AIR CONDITIONING: I found this. You should do this. Here's some other stuff I want you to know.
  18. Go back to your teacher and get the specific web address. Don't know there is one other than the Preston's Guide.
  19. See picture 1 in post #17 above.
  20. Nah, it was just a sheathing guy figuring on installing gable vents and later it was switched to ridge or box vents.
  21. Matthew, I don't have a picture handy but there are new digital thermostats designed to run a heat pump that have no readily visible emergency heat selection. You have to push and hold a couple of the buttons at the same time to get it to switch to emergency heat. Don't even remember the brand. BUT, it's a small white square with a digital screen and only a couple of buttons like up - down temp and fan auto - on. Haven't seen one in awhile but I think I remember that you push and hold the up and fan mode buttons for a few seconds to get it to switch to emergency heat. Might want to look at that. White - Rodgers brand rings a bell but I'm not sure.
  22. I'm not in the NW but just saw such yesterday on a 14 year old roof. Image Insert: 74.9 KB Not to mention the spider web cracking. Image Insert: 113.9 KB Even on the ridge shingles. Image Insert: 97.11 KB Blow offs like that occur pretty regular around here in Central Kentucky.
  23. Probably a drive through garage for a boat - camper, etc. Don't look like there's an opener on the right side door.
  24. Just like focusing a magnifying glass to start a fire.
  25. Roofers who are doing it right use a separate ridge shingle instead of cutting a regular shingle. Obviously, these are defective ridge shingles.
