white powder in attic
davidlord replied to John Dirks Jr's topic in Pest Control (WDI, WDO and Rodents)
It's most likely a product like Delta Dust that contains Deltamethrin which is an insecticide dust. See it all the time in these parts. -
Coming in 2009 - Cell Phone Video Projectors
davidlord replied to hausdok's topic in News Around The Net
The problem with these "smart phones" is they do really neat stuff until you just want to talk on the phone. I have an HTC Touch and it works great for web, email, and the like but it really sucks for a phone. -
IMHO the US is a great product. I've had one of mine for over 10 years. I cycle 2 lights and seldom need more than 1 on any given inspection.

Snow birds are the folks that come down here and talk about stuff like that.

OFFENDED EASILY: Don't Look
davidlord replied to Brandon Whitmore's topic in Pest Control (WDI, WDO and Rodents)
I once found a garage freezer full of Coor's Light cases. Wondering why someone would freeze beer I looked in one of the cases and it was packed full of weed. -
I use two little cube type infrared heaters in our 30' travel trailer when were camping in cold weather places. Never have to fire up the furnace.
-
I'm just glad that I only have to swipe my debit card once to fill up the Excursion.
-
Using the IR cam will teach you everything you need to know for home inspection use.

This is from the International Residential Code. SECTION M1502 CLOTHES DRYER EXHAUST M1502.1 General. Dryer exhaust systems shall be independent of all other systems, and shall convey the moisture to the outdoors. Exception: This section shall not apply to listed and labeled condensing (ductless) clothes dryers. M1502.2 Duct termination. Exhaust ducts shall terminate on the outside of the building. Exhaust duct terminations shall be in accordance with the dryer manufacturerââ¬â¢s installation instructions. Exhaust ducts shall terminate not less than 3 feet (914 mm) in any direction from openings into buildings. Exhaust duct terminations shall be equipped with a backdraft damper. Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination. M1502.3 Duct size. The diameter of the exhaust duct shall be as required by the clothes dryerââ¬â¢s listing and the manufacturerââ¬â¢s installation instructions. M1502.4 Transition ducts. Transition ducts shall not be concealed within construction. Flexible transition ducts used to connect the dryer to the exhaust duct system shall be limited to single lengths, not to exceed 8 feet (2438 mm) and shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 2158A. Homeowner Denial: My Home Is Gaining Value
davidlord replied to hausdok's topic in News Around The Net
There is a particular neighborhood over on the island that shot up during the height of the market. I'm in there almost weekly inspecting short sales and foreclosures. The last one the original purchaser paid $570,000.00. The nice young couple I inspected it for paid 280,000.00. -

I've been using the InspectIt software for 10 years. Works for me.

I don't quite understand your relation of the well head to a septic sump pump. In these parts its not uncommon to have a municipal water source and a septic system. We are fortunate enough to orient our drain fields to resemble elephant burial mounds. Your picture is typical of most sump pump outlet installations.

It's been cyclic here. Good week followed by a slow week. As long as there are good weeks I don't care. My pest control company has done well this year. Its kinda like having a second job except I don't really have to work at it.
-
I check the temp only if it feels hotter than it should to the touch. If it's hotter than 120 I recommend they turn it down. I don't fix stuff either.

Structural terra cotta is the correct term. I usually just tell folks its hollow clay tile. There are houses in a section of the historic district along the bayfront where the foundations and exterior walls are constructed with clay tile. Late 1800's stuff.

I don't think Vandy has the depth to play with the likes of Florida through the 4th qtr. But so far this year who knows.

I guess Willie is better than "Kid Rock". That's who the fine folks in charge of the St Augustine amphitheater booked for this past weekend.

When I had my house built I had a dedicated hot water loop installed and the plumber installed the circulation pump with the shaft vertical. After some discussion and them reaching the conclusion that it didn't matter I gave them the installation instructions and they were happy to comply. I don't know why the shaft orientation makes a difference because they will work correctly vertical.

As IR Prices Come Down Energy Audits See Uptick
davidlord replied to hausdok's topic in InfraredThermography
I was conducting a home inspection several weeks ago and these 2 guys showed up in an unmarked truck wearing unmarked tee shirts and carrying a clipboard. Turns out they were there to conduct an energy audit. Mid 70's 1700sf concrete block ranch with new single hung thermals and a new 13 SEER heat pump. They walked around, took some measurements, wrote down the size of the heat pump, and peeked in the attic. They had no equipment other than the clipboard. As I was exiting the attic the one guy asked if I had gone through the entire attic and how did it look. I told him it looked like most attics of this age and construction look. He commented on my ladder (they didn't have one) and went in another room. End result was to install new gas filled, low E windows, blow in some insulation to increase from R-13 to R-38, and replace the heat pump with a higher SEER unit and replace all the ductwork. Of course they would be including a quote for them to make all these improvements. I could have put on a better show just with my thermal camera. -
Looks like my USC/Florida prediction for the National Championship game is history. I'm a Florida State fan and a closet Gator fan (I grew up about 25 miles form the Swamp) but I like the parity in teams this season. Alabama looked like the team to beat this weekend.

I cover my tracks as best I can.

After my morning inspection yesterday I drove out to a house (about 30 miles one way) to conduct a 4-point inspection. The client had called me several days ago and we talked about the inspection and that just because I provided the inspection it won't guarantee an insurance policy. I get there and I can tell from the truck the roof is at least 20 years old (3-tab) and should have been replaced several years ago. He proceeds to tell me he had an electrician and plumber tell him everything was ok and all he needed was for me to say the roof had another 5 years of life. I told him I couldn't do that because that roof needs to be replaced. He said it doesn't matter that no one will know because its just for insurance. I told him that I would know and that's not how I operate. He decides he doesn't want the inspection and that he hates that I drove out there for nothing. I told him that hated it as well because it took up about an hour of my time and my Excursion ain't no hybrid. He hands me $20.00 for gas so I take it and start to leave resisting the urge to snatch a knot in his head, as my Dad would say. He ask me to wait as he calls his insurance guy. Insurance guy says go ahead and do the inspection but stretch the life on the roof as much as possible. I do the inspection, he writes me a check, I give him his $20 back, and I sent the report that says the roof needs to be replaced.
