  1. does anybody else think the floor was removed by previous lame brain remodeler?
  2. Letsnot bring global warming and holes in the ozone layer into a technical discussion, cuz thats gonna open a big can of worms really fast! [] Anyway R-22 is still plentifull and cheap if youre licensed to buy it,and replacement compressors for R-22 equipment are also readily available. So if you have a newer R-22 unit id say thats no more than 10 years old its not that big of a deal to change out the compressor and get another 5 years or more from the system. As for puron thats carrier/bryants brand name for their product, its not a general term for all brands.and anybody whos been in the trades for any amount of time knows of their issues with leaking equipt over the years
  3. theres a section in every building code be it mechanical, electrical or plumbing about workmanship that would have the shmuck who installed that system tossed to the curb by any decent city inspector. as for the line sizing the liquid line seems to have more of an affect from being undersized in my book anyway,it depends a lot on the line lengths
  4. those can only be used on exterior underground repairs around he,inside you would use a no-hub coupling with stainless shield and band
  5. your area doesnt require a seperate ground for each?
  6. its common to see them slightly above the surface depending on who installed it or the driveway. as long as its clear of concrete around the diameter ill usually just lay a 2x4 on top of it and give it a couple thumps with a 2lb sledge depending on how easy it moves. the stopbox basically a piece of pipe with a squashed end that telescopes inside another pipe, normally they are extended all the way so there is usually 12" or so of play in there. ive got 5-6 stop box replacements allready lined up ,just waiting on snow to melt so we can start on them
  7. the service panel should have its own ground wire from the buss to street side of water meter, meter socket should have been grounded through a groundrod outside. other grounding/bonding would depend on when service was installed and also on local codes
  8. are they talking about the control box for the ignition being 6" of the ground or the actual burners? id be more concerned about where the burners are,ive never seen one with burners 6" from bottem of cabinet. got any pictures? [:-magnify
  9. news to me,normally if the system gets down to around 30 psi or so on suction or low side it will ice up,lack of airflow will also cause this
  10. Ive got to agree on the paint,of course im not an inspector though
  11. normally a roof vent has to be terminated so many feet above roof line, depending on local codes
  12. why would anybody go to all that trouble and expense? plus if the clog is in the stack both sinks will back up making it harder to diagnose
  13. some sort of vent? [:-bigeyes
  14. the green corosion on the pvc is from water dripping down front of plenum getting trapped where the pvc and coil meet.
  15. That looks like a 320a meter socket to me,there should be a red lever under the panel to disconnect the meter from the circuit there by killing all power to the house if need be
  16. so what are you guys saying here, drainthe system?
  17. im referring to the side of the water service feeding the house
  18. id drain the system myself, make sure you tag the controls on boiler so nobody turns it on dry.
  19. Our local utility company pushed those auto dampers really hard in the 80s,when the 90s rolled around they started to realize what a mistake they were! [:-yuck]I replaced a lot of heat exchangers on furnaces that developed cracks from those things sticking shut and overheating furnaces,i either remove them or atleast disable them when i service furnaces. As far as the boiler goes just because its old doesnt mean its time to replace it!The people i deal with that complain the most about utility bills are the same ones that never service their equipment whether its forced air or a boiler doesnt matter,it needs to be serviced! Boilers are just like water heaters,i tell people if the flush the trash out of their boiler daily on large commercial boilers and weekly on residential equipment they last a long time. All that nasty black crud/sludge you see when you drain the water is the same crud that coats/insulates the inside of the pipes and radiators, think of it as boiling mud instead of water [:-weepn]
  20. double traps under a sink arent common around here either, double the things to worry about in my book anyway. commercial sink drains are generally routed to a floor sink with a strainer, not directly into sewer.many places also require a grease interceptor for commercial kitchens []
  21. i would guess its pulling water back from water heater when system opens.a backflow preventer on sprinkler system would make no differance in this case, backflow preventer would need to go on house side of service if you were worried about it. []
  22. Back when I was still teaching plumbing for my continuing ed hours I used to take my classes on lots of field trips to show them how things were made and used every day in the trades, rather than just looking at pictures in a book 3 hrs a night.Anyway cres line plastics in c.b iowa was one of the places they liked to go,very interesting process involved in making pvc and sdr pipe I efinately reccomend a tour if you ever get the chance []
  23. most 30 plus year old brick chimneys i look at cant hardly support themselves let alone a condensing unit hanging off of it like a cantilever ! [:-thumbd]
  24. Around here they used to allow recessing the meter sockets into the exterior walls behind the siding with the meter and access cover exposed for servicing, but it still had to be in emt or rigid pipe depending on whether or not service drop was supported by the mast. Now a days we are not allowed to have nonfused wire inside a wall whether its in pipe or not all service wire to meters has to be mounted outside of exterior of structure
  25. what kind of protection does that provide?
