Oven Location

There is a flight of stair immediately left of this oven/range.  My client worried someone climbing the stairs could inadvertently touch a hot range-top, and thought a guard-rail of some sort, or a knee wall is needed at the side of the oven/range to protect from such.  (There is a handrailing along the other side of the stairway.)

Is protection to the side of the oven/range *required*?

I believe codes defer to the manufacturer's instructions. I don't think there will be anything to address this.

I would call it a design flaw. Someone focused on cooking  could step off into space.

It can be fixed, but the seller is not obliged to do it for the buyer. It's been said before, there is no code to protect people from stupid.

I count four risers in that flight, which likely means there is a 30" drop.  I would call it a stairwell in need of a guard.

The stairwell only requires a guard where there's "walking surface" beside it. I'd have a hard time calling that a walking surface.

The range is a plug and play device, not a built-in.  Roll it out of the way and you have walkable area. Guard needed here.

While we are at it, those treads look mighty narrow.  Does a foot fit the depth of each?

From the looks at the triangle shaped wall besides the stairway, I'd say about 45 degrees.
